  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I live in Chicago, where there MANY United Methodist Churches, but many of them seem very liberal and I believe pretty firmly that if I am going to join the UMC, it has to be in an orthodox Methodist parish. Are there any tips or tricks for finding a more orthodox parish?

One way to go about it would be to go to their websites and search for a statement of faith. Pay close attention to what they say about the Bible, as this will tell you how liberal they are. It's not foolproof, but it is a way to narrow your choices.

Look for a sign in front which says either "Eastern Orthodox Church" or "Roman Catholic Parish". That's your best bet. ;-) (sorry. couldn't resist)

Seriously, if there is a Methodist equivalent of a Diocese in your city, you can ask what Churches have the most orthodox leaning pastors. Look for a lot of bible activity. Listen in the services for a lot of talk about Jesus Christ, and how Jesus teachings, life, death, and resurrection apply to your daily life today (during the sermons). And of course, the condoning or brushing aside of the concepts of sin, hell, immorality, etc. Has the church you're in given in to the culture of death which surrounds us, or are they fighting against immorality, and sin?

Best of luck,

Yours in Christ,

Steven

I will continue looking for this, although based on what I have seen, most churches do not have this, and the ones that do, at least here in the city, are pretty far from orthodox.

UMC.org said:
Regional Offices

Districts: A regional office that resources a particular group of churches, supervised by a district superintendent.
Jurisdictions: Five geographic areas in the United States, each composed of several annual (regional) conferences.
Bishops/Episcopal Area: A regional office, superivised by a bishop.
Those turn up these results for Northern Illinois:
Districts
Annual Conference
Episcopal Area

I've some bad news for you. Most of the suggestions you have been given thus far are not likely to help you much. The UMC is not like a nondenominational church. Our statement of faith is going to be the same in every church (or at least it should be) and is located in our Book of Discipline. This may be posted on their website, but whether it is or not, it should be the same at every church, and yet as you have indicated some are more liberal and some are more conservative than others.

I also don't think you're likely to get a district or conference office to give you a list of the most conservative pastors. That's just not the way our system relates to one another.

However, that does not mean that there are not ways to find out the same information. You just have to ask other sources.

The Confessing Movement is a group within the UMC that have adopted a very conservative response to the issue of homosexuality and other related social issues.

I think you will also find the Good News Movement to be what I would call orthodox.

Both would be sources that might tell you about what pastors or church are connected with them.

If you try that and don't find what you need, come back here and ask again (or PM me) and I might have a few other ideas. Unfortunately, while in Illinois, I'm in a different conference than Chicago so I really don't know those pastors or churches. But there are other ways to learn things, sometimes it is as simple as trial and error sampling of local churches.

Thank you very the excellent advice Grace Seeker. I will take your advice and see if that comes up with anything. As I mentioned before, I have found that in the more liberal churches in the UMC, there is often times an effort made to pronounce that view, especially on issues like social justice, etc. But in the more conservative churches here, it is a lot more difficult to tell. I believe you are right on.

I will take your advice and see what I can come up with.
