  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are Jack Chick tracts hate speech?

Jack Trick tracts are a fundamentalist Christian proselytizing tool that turn up in places like restaurants, airports, bathrooms, bus stations, etc. Most of them are written with the intention of scaring anyone who doesn't believe in fundamentalist Christianity that they will burn in hell.

In this tract, Christian ministers who spent fifty years as humanitarians for the poor are sent to hell for not trusting in the blood of Jesus for their salvation:
Flight 144

It's rather transparent what the message of this tract is for anyone who doesn't accept its fundamentalist theology, that whoever actually tries to put Jesus' actual teachings into practice rather than simply "trusting in the blood" is damned to hell for their works-righteousness.

Nobody "loves" Jack Chick tracts except for people who already agree with their fundamentalist mentality. The vast majority of people are offended by them or just find them silly.

This tract I find especially offensive, as it's obviously designed for traumatizing children into accepting the blood of Jesus or else...

Is it moral that people are allowed to litter public places with these offensive materials?

I'd say they are hate speech.

I agree. I can hardly think of a worse representation of the Christian faith or evangelical tool than those abortions.

There's one about how Islam was a Catholic conspiracy to destroy proto-protestants, and another about how the fiction of C.S. Lewis is paganism and can make someone hang themselves.

Boy, the rubbish people can conjure up sometimes, right?

I can't imagine how lifeless whatever church Chick belongs to (or leads) must be, I would even dare to say that it probably rivals Westboro Baptist Church.

On a side note, there ought to be an internet "law" like Godwin's Law for mentioning WBC, since it comes up fairly often... something like: "As an online discussion on a Christian forum grows longer, the probability a comparison involving Westboro Baptist Church or Fred Phelps approaches 1."

:p

The only reason why I am mentioning them on an internet forum is how often they randomly appear at public places and how often there are proselytizers passing them out whether you want them or not.

I've heard they're seen in a lot of places, ironically I've never encountered one in person. I've only ever seen them or heard about them online.

It seems every chick track is different - for when I was a kid, my mom and baby-sitter would often go to the Christian Bookstore where they had chick tracks...and goodness, they always seemed to encourage me to take Jesus/Heaven and Hell seriously. Some seemed pretty intense - but many were sensible.

Will never forget this one from back in the day:

Of course, others seemed to be a bit over the top when it came to equating differing views to lacking salvation...like saying you'll go to hell if you believe evolution to be true.

The one labeled "The Curse of Baphomet" on Freemasonry used to freak me out - although when studying Freemasonry, I can see why it was such a big issue to be aware of it.

Yeah that's just atrocious. I think Chick's in for some irony when he departs, not that he's destined for hell, but it's possible that many of the folks he believes won't be in paradise actually will be.

I think my favorite is where the satanic Pope, in order to destroy the satanic Eastern Orthodox church, creates the satanic Nazis to attack the satanic Communists who made a deal with the EO.... yeah! Thats the ticket!

It sounds like Jack Chick or whoever creates these tracts dwells on the devil more than anyone else, including the objects of his derision.

Is that the one where the Russian Orthodox Church made a secret deal to overthrow the Tsar with the Bolsheviks and financed them with their secret dragon hoard of gold?

"Hate speech" is a modern invention allowing the user to criminally prosecute anything at all that he finds highly offensive. Because it addresses an emotional attitude rather than a measurable act, it is about criminalizing people's ideas and words rather than their actions. It can and will be used against us, for taking stands against evils that the world would tell is are good.
