Supreme Court Rules Out Guns In Georgia Churches

I don't understand if this is a joke or not.

Sorry. The second amendment was written some 1800 years after Christ. Therefore it couldn't possibly have been a serious statement, which I thought you could further tell by my use of no caps, indicating that our God isn't an idiot to make such decrees. That guns weren't invented for quite some time after Jesus' earthly ministry also comes to bear, and I didn't mention that.

Sorry to confuse you, please forgive me

That's the churches' own fault.

As soon as a church files for tax-emempt status (401-c document if memory serves correct), they officially give up the right to make their own rules.
Our church does a LOT, and I mean a LOT for our community (it is, after all, a community church). I am positive we wouldn't be doing as much as the tax breaks we receive would justify, but I would hope that our work offsets at least some of tax breaks we get.

Hehe. Yeah, OK, I'm recovering from a sense of humour bypass. Apologies.

It's just that here on CF and especially when the topic is gun ownership/right to bear arms, I have read some strange things.

A lot of people in this thread apparently don't understand why churches are tax-exempt.

In Walz v. Tax Commission, the Supreme Court noted that the church’s “uninterrupted freedom from taxation” has “operated affirmatively to help guarantee the free exercise of all forms of religious belief.” The much misunderstood “separation between church and state” is in truth designed to restrict the sovereignty of each over the other. That is, it is designed to achieve a position for each that is neither master nor servant of the other. Exemption from income taxation is essential for respect of the church as a separate sovereign entity. Otherwise the government has the power to encumber and even terminate churches if such taxes are not punctually paid or cannot be so paid in full. Indeed, as the high court noted many years ago, “the power to tax involves the power to destroy.”

Even today, certain countries (mostly in the Middle East) have a special tax for those who do not follow the state-approved religion.

What if their religion declares John Moses Browning a saint, and any of his firearms as amulets?

Wouldn't that be amusing?

Except they are Baptists. They are Christian.

If their religion believes as you describe then the Rastafarian's should also be allowed to have their religion their way....

That's fine...and if churches are okay with having to put up with the governmnent's special rules on certain matters, then by all means, go for the tax break.

However, for the church referenced in the OP, they're upset that they can't carry in church when they knew the moment they filed that paperwork for the tax break and "official" status, they officially become recognized by the government as a church and thus a "gun free zone"

Not saying I agree with it one way or the other, just stating how the current rules are set up and how it applies to the church in question.

You can't expect the government to give you a tax break on something like that, and then expect them not to want to define the conditions of the tax break.

If it were as simple as that, everyone would just invite their buddies over once a week to talk about their feelings, then write their house off as a church come tax time.

Meh, just take away their guns, their bibles, their preachers, their 10 commandments, their crosses, force them to take a handful of condoms and give them a receipt for their contribution to abortion and call that 'religious freedom.'

That rant was awesome.

You've got to admit that it would be an amusing end run around the NFA.

If you wouldn't, maybe you should go somewhere where you would feel safe.
