  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What a boring tirade of misleading drivel. Methodological naturalism is science. (and that is all science, not just evolution, despite the vitriol of the quoted paper).

And by the way, we understand it just fine, we actually use it as opposed to the whingers that just complain about it.

You want other types of results, use some other methodology. See an astrologer, for instance.

Barf... I just vomited all over my keyboard...

"Over and over evolutionists today agree that science must strictly be limited to naturalistic explanations. "

sci·ence
systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.

Those darn evolutionists!!! They keep insisting that biology is the only way to discover things about biology!

Would you mind telling us why you are an atheist? If you do not mind that is.

Thanks.

"Over and over evolutionists today agree that science must strictly be limited to naturalistic explanations. One finds this throughout the evolutionary literature and it is a consistent refrain in discussions and debates about evolution."

Are you kidding me? How is this solely applied to evolution? This is all science. If you don't like it, go live in a cave and try not to die at the age of 25 due to lack of all modern scientific advances.

Ok. And how did reading the Bible lead you to be an atheist?

Well first i had an emotional response to the horrible atrocities that yahweh supposedly commanded the hebrews to commit. Things like slaughtering babies to keeping preteen virgin girls as sex slaves to stoning people to death for minor offenses to the bad advice given by jesus on the sermon on the mount.

Then i decided to take a critical look at the bible and formed a bunch of intellectual opinions on things like the numerous contradictions of the bible including the conflicting stories of jesus' birth, to studying how the bible was actually written, copied, deleted from, and added to over the years.

The Bible appears completely man made. only fallible men would make that many mistakes. If the bible was inspired by a god, you'd think it would at least be accuracte. Also the morals in the bible are horrible. It seems more likely that the laws in the bible were constructed by evil men in order to acheive specific agendas like conquering neighboring tribes.

All you gotta say is god wants you to go kill all those people over there and take their land in order to motivate them to do it. Oh by the way, god wants you to kill the males but keep the young virgin daughters for yourself... Right, sounds more like what a perverted man would want rather that a just god.

Excellent DaneaFL!

From the above I have gathered the following. Correct me if I err in any way:

1. You had an emotional response to instances in the Bible which you deem were horrible atrocities, and bad advice given by Jesus during His Sermon on the Mount.

2. You formed intellectual opinions on what you perceived to be numerous contradictions in the Bible.

3. You maintain that it appears to be completely man-made.

5. You claim that the morals in the Bible are horrible.

6. All of the above have led you to believe that the impetus in compiling the various pieces of literature in the Bible was due to the perversive desires of men, rather than divine command.

7. Therefore, God does not exist.

Is this correct?

No... a god or some form of supreme being might still exist...

I'm just pretty certain that Yahweh doesn't exist since he's clearly man made.

Declaring that NO god anywhere could POSSIBLE exist just because one particular version of the idea fails would be a dishonest, illogical assumption.

If you want the reason why I don't believe in ANY particular God it's because there hasn't been any evidence presented yet to show that any of them exist... and the time to believe something is when there is evidence to at least lend a decent amount of probability to something's existence, not before.

You don't think the portrayal of a genocidal maniac God in the OT who decrees a penalty of death for the crime of being too terrified to cry out during a rape might put some people off him a bit?

So you do believe in justice, you just do not think the God of the Bible represents Justice?

keeping preteen virgin girls as sex slaves
So if a man has sex with his slave and she has a baby then is the baby free or a slave?

DaneaFL's experience with the Bible was similar to my own. I was a Christian for most of my life until I actually started reading the Bible and thinking about what I was reading. And to be honest, I was disgusted by a lot of what I read. I don't speak for DaneaFL, but I do believe in justice and I definitely don't believe the God of the Bible represents any modern concept of moral justice.

Yes, I believe in justice and the Yahweh of the Bible is definitely NOT just... and he's definitely NOT the supreme authority on morals...

He seems more like the invention of backward savages that hadn't quite developed a modern justice system or morals.

I can prove that not only am I more just than Yahweh but that most Christians are also more moral than him as well.

We live in a modern society where, for the most part, we determine our morals and justice system based on what is objectively shown to cause the least amount of harm to our fellow humans.

This is a principle that didn't exist back when the Bible was written. Back then they followed morals based on unfounded assumptions, monarchical authority, and religious dogma.

So of course we would expect the god of their religion to reflect the moral values of the people... and we find exactly that. We find moral values that aren't grounded on any rational basis like the condemnation of homosexuals or the law against boiling a baby goat in it's own mother's milk.

So if a man has sex with his slave and she has a baby then is the baby free or a slave?

I know your bible condones slavery but I would start by asking "is slavery moral?" before doing into the specifics like your question.

Who is Yahweh?

The Hebrew war god that your god was derived from.

The god Yahweh was the supreme deity of the Judeans and they excluded all other rival deities from their pantheon soon after they wrote the forgery called Deuteronomy and claimed that they '"found" this lost book of Moses.

They did this to drum up national morale during King Josiah's time. They thought some good propaganda that declared the war god to be the "one true god" would rally the nation during this time of war.

...and it worked to. They won the war and so naturally they attributed this victory to their war god, Yahweh... and overnight monotheism was born!

You guys mean ... after he's born ... right?

Like I said "for the most part". We haven't gotten our morals perfect yet.
