  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm making this post to address all the non-muslims who may be confused about the concept of Martyrdom in Islam and Paradise. I've noticed that a lot of people here say things about Islam, especially this topic without having accurate knowledge about it. Also, many Christians use this to attack Islamic beliefs, to say that Muslims just care about sex and such things. This is totally contrary to Islamic beliefs. Regarding the Hoors, or "Maiden's of Paradise", God says in the Quran.

Chapter 2, Verse 25. But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom, they say: "Why, this is what we were fed with before," for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure (and holy); and they abide therein (for ever).

Chapter 3, Verse 15. Say: Shall I give you glad tidings of things Far better than those? For the righteous are Gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home; with companions pure (and holy); and the good pleasure of Allah. For in Allah.s sight are (all) His servants,-

Chapter 4, Verse 57. But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, We shall soon admit to Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath,- their eternal home: Therein shall they have companions pure and holy: We shall admit them to shades, cool and ever deepening.

Chapter 36, Verse 56. They and their associates will be in groves of (cool) shade, reclining on Thrones (of dignity);

Chapter 36 Verse 48. And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
Verse 49. As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.

Chapter 55, Verse 56. In them will be (Maidens), chaste, restraining their glances, whom no man or Jinn before them has touched;-

Chapter 78, Verse 31. Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires;
32. Gardens enclosed, and grapevines;
33.
Companions of equal age;
34.
And a cup full (to the brim).
35.
No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth:-
36.
Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient,
37.
(From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, ((Allah)) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.

As you can see God never mentions anything about sex, or them being servants to the men. But rather the focus is on their purity, and chastity. God created each and every one of them pure, and they will love their husbands and never cast their gaze at any other males. God created them to be the wives and companions of the righteous men. Often they are made out to be almost like sex slaves according to statements made by some non-Muslims. This is totally untrue and has no evidence to support it in Islamic religion. And also, not every male will get 72 wives in paradise. That is a privilage only reserved for the Martyrs. God tells us in the Quran that every man will get atleast 1 wife in Paradise. But the Martyrs are the ones who get married to 72 maidens of paradise as a reward from God for sacrificing their lives for him.

In the Quran, God tells us about the martyrs:

Chapter 3, Verse 169.
Think not of those who are slain in Allah.s way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord;
Verse 170.
They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah. And with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (Martyrs) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they (cause to) grieve.
Verse 171.
They glory in the Grace and the bounty from Allah, and in the fact that Allah suffereth not the reward of the Faithful to be lost (in the least).

The Prophet Muhammad, S.A.W., also mentioned the virtues of Martyrdom.

Al-Miqdam Ibn Ma'di Karib, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said: "A martyr has six bounties: He will be forgiven with the first drop of his blood that is spilt; He will see his place in Paradise (at the time of death); He will be saved from the 'Great Horror' (on the Day of Judgment): A Crown of Dignity will be placed on his head, which contains many corundums, each one being more precious than this life and all that it contains; He will have seventy two Women of Paradise; And, he will be allowed to intercede for seventy of his family members (who would have otherwise gone to hell)." (Tirmidhi & Ibn Maajah).

Excellent. I have a question about 'martyrs' in Islam.

In Christianity a martyr is someone who is prepared to die for our faith, and they are rightly honoured. Personally I would honour anyone of any faith with that degree of commitment to it. However, if someone deliberately kills in the process of dying for our faith, they are NOT honoured as a Christian martyr; this one is very clear; no murderer can be a holy martyr.

In Islam it appears that even those who kill other people - innocent men, women and children - in the process of dying for their faith are regarded as martyrs. My question is; what is that all about?

Why does Islam honour cold blooded murderers as martyrs, and claim that they see the face of Allah when they die, and that they are rewarded with 72 virgins, when in fact the only thing awaiting such people is a rather lengthy sojourn somewhere very, very hot?

I look forward to your answer.

I did find an interesting reference to the 72 houris:

The concept of 72 virgins in Islam refers to an aspect of paradise. In a collection by Imam at-Tirmidhi in his "Sunan" (Volume IV, Chapters on "The Features of Heaven as described by the Messenger of Allah", chapter 21: "About the Smallest Reward for the People of Heaven", hadith 2687) and also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir (Qur'anic Commentary) of Surah Quran 55:72, it is stated:
It was mentioned by Daraj Ibn Abi Hatim, that Abu al-Haytham 'Adullah Ibn Wahb narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudhri, who heard Muhammad saying, 'The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy-two houri, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from al-Jabiyyah to San'a.[62]
However, regarding the above statement Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf has said: "The narration, which claims that everyone would have seventy-two wives has a weak chain of narrators." [46]There is also a theory that the promise of 72 virgins is a mistranslation from "72 white grapes".[63]

Houri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The word "houri"

in Islam, a beautiful maiden who awaits the devout Muslim in paradise. The Arabic word hawra' signifies the contrast of the clear white of the eye to the blackness of the iris. There are numerous references to the houri in the Qur'an describing them as "purified wives" and "spotless virgins." Tradition elaborated on the sensual image

Dear Artha,

Houri is the Arabic word which we translate as the Heavenly Maiden. For Baha'is it represents the Holy Spirit. In the plural houris represent God's attributes and the level of meanings found in the Word of God. Hence we speak of the Writings as having 72 meanings.

Also regarding shedding the blood of innocents I found the following:

"Beware of the sin of shedding blood without religious justification and sanction because there is nothing quicker to bring down the Wrath of Allah, to take away His Blessings, to make you more deserving of His Wrath and to reduce the span of your life than to shed innocent blood. On the Day of Judgement Allah will first attend to sins of bloodshed carried out by man against man. Therefore, never try to strengthen your power, position and prestige by shedding innocent blood. Such murders instead of making your position strong will not only considerably weaken it but may also transfer your power totally, taking it away from you and entrusting it to somebody else."

You are missing the big picture. Regardless the definition of "houri", martyrs, like the 19 pious Muslims that redesigned the NY skyline, are rewarded for their deeds.
