  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

People have their property, their health and sometimes their lives taken by violence all the time. The Takers often have guns and they rarely have badges. Sometimes they have a gang affiliation.
You believe that people who have not been sanctioned by a state have been responsible for more deaths and have taken more property than people who have been sanctioned by a state?
We pay taxes to hire police to stop this from happening.
What part of my post are you replying too? We're on too protection services now? It looks like you are from the United States. I was under the impression that taxes in the United States went towards more than protection services.

Are protection services the only area that you advocate that the fruits of another person's labor be taken under threat of violence to support?

Are you a consequentialist?

What I said was that collecting taxes is not stealing. I think everyone saw that. It was said in the context of taxing people for the sake of ensuring the welfare of people. The question of taxation came up not because I brought it up, but because others came around with blanket accusations against it as stealing. To promote extremely peculiar things like that in this thread is not really on topic, especially not when the whole argument behind it becomes a thing for its own sake completely apart from Santorum's politics. The thread is a mess.

...I don't even need to Gowdin the thread, and I can name off many governments, any one of which has probably killed more people than street gangs.

Notice I didn't say "through violence," I said "under threat of violence." A subtle yet important difference, as I don't think many people want physical violence used to collect taxes. They hope everyone pays them without resisting.

Are you saying that if someone doesn't pay their taxes people with badges and guns won't come and take their property and/or put them in a cage? Or do you not consider those to be violent acts?

Yeah, a subtle difference that's entirely moot.

Nice try, but civil asset seizures to satisfy a debt, and jailtime (which is a rare consequence only in cases of willful & substantial tax evasion & fraud, NOT in the case of simply --oops!-- owing taxes) are not violent acts. Obviously scary and undesirable, but not violent. Unless you have an extremely broad, and exaggerated definition of the word.

Come on, guys. Nobody enjoys paying taxes, but the majority of Americans agree with their existence, and rather enjoy their fruits/benefits. We can almost all agree that the system needs major fixing, but to start pulling out all this scaremongering about "threats of violence," theft, and Communist China is absurd. I fear the consequences of defaulting on my student loans waaaaay more than I fear the IRS.

And what's even funnier is that this extremist ideology pile-up was brought about by the mere mention of concern for the poor.

Apparently concern for the poor conjures up imagery of violence, theft, and dictatorship. This place is a trip sometimes.

Who said anything about stealing or theft before you just did?

So, you're the arbiter of definitions? Is this really the argument you want to make? A semantic one based on the definition of the term “violence.” That forcefully entering a person's domicile, subduing, and confining them isn't a violent act?

As long as a majority wants something and benefits that makes it okay?
