  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lol--"guns don't kill people. People kill people."

Take an amount of time--say, 2 minutes. Figure out how many people you could kill with your bare hands in that amount of time. Figure out how many people you could kill with a particular type of gun in that amount of time.

Subtract.

That's how many people were killed simply due to the possession of the gun.

I am pro- hunting for food (I don't do it now, but would like to), and fine with people who shoot non-living targets for sport.

There are some types of guns, though, that are specifically designed to kill as many people as possible. Not animals, not targets: people. Hunters are not surrounded by huge numbers of bears and find themselves needing to fire enormous numbers of rounds without reloading.

No private citizen needs any kind of machine gun or automatic weapon.

Unfortunately, we didn't really get any posters from the other side of the issue. I notice that the tally was 18-for, 0-against.

I figured we'd at least get a few that would bring some new discussion points to the table.

Well, you've worded the question in a way that makes just about everyone vote "No" even if they are for gun control. I'm for heavy gun control in my own country, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about owning a gun.

Anyway, when you make a poll it's a good idea to at the very least include an "other" option, because for some questions yes/no answers are simply not enough, and the results easily end up misrepresenting people's actual view points due to the complexities involved.

Peter :)

Actually, I'm not surprised.

Since women are more vulnerable to attack (due to physical reasons), I would expect that.

More likely I think it's because women tend to carry their belongings around in handbags. If man purses ever catch on, expect the numbers to be closer to 50/50.

I can't really answer the question. Guns have their legitimate uses, but I think we all know that what we're talking about is not hunting. Nobody is questioning the right to have a (registered) gun for hunting or for use at a shooting range.

What we need to realise is that carrying a semi-automatic weapon around an urban area has nothing to do with hunting or any other legitimate purpose. Many guns are designed simply to maim or kill other human beings. The ownership of these guns ought to be absolutely illegal.

As for the Constitutionality, the Constitution specifically allows for a well-armed militia in order to protect against tyranny. That made sense when the British tyrants and the Colonies only had guns. Now the government has a professional army, nuclear and chemical weapons. How exactly is some hardcore defender of the Second Amendment going to stop the US government installing dictatorship when the former has a handgun and the latter has WMD? The Constitution also doesn't specify what type of arms are allowed. So if you can understand why I don't think the Second Amendment covers Joe Bloggs having a nuclear weapon or an anthrax lab, why not a handgun?

I don't think owning gun is wrong in anyway. I've had over 120 hours of in class training on gun safety and gun laws, and countless hours of practice on the range. I've never had an accidental discharge of any kind.

Do you think there's anything wrong with gun ownership?

I'm with you. My fiance and I own several guns/rifles, and shoot a good deal (he was a rifle safety instructor in his earlier life) and we've never had an accidents.

We also are both not really into hunting sports. I'd like to go deer hunting at some point, but once will probably be enough and I'll clean and eat what I kill. We do fish a good deal, and we're both careful to not cause undue suffering of the fish we catch, though they're arguably not smart enough to know whats going on. Shooting random animals for fun doesn't really have any appeal.

Guns are bad.

Why are guns bad?

In relation to the OP, I think gun control boils down to one question: "Is society perfectable?" If it is, gun control should be in place, and all weapons should be destroyed to perfect humanity. If it isn't, then everyone should have a gun, as no one can be perfect, and we will always have gun problems. Better to have a defense in this situation.

They are a tool. When that tool is used properly, people are killed and maimed in horrible ways.

What fi they are used for recreation? Hunting? Are they not "tools" in those areas as well? Their purpose is not for murder alone.

I guess I would wonder what else they could be intended for? Most likely the intention behind their design is efficient effective killing or I would want my money back. I believe target shooting was developed i order to practice being a more effective shooter of people and animals but mostly people.

But does original use supersede current use?

Gun Deaths & Injuries

In 2007, guns took the lives of 31,224 Americans in homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings. This is the equivalent of more than 85 deaths each day and more than three deaths each hour.1

69,863 Americans were treated in hospital emergency department for non-fatal gunshot wounds in 2007.2

Firearms were the third-leading cause of injury-related deaths nationwide in 2007, following motor vehicle accidents and poisoning.3

Between 1955 and 1975, the Vietnam War killed over 58,000 American soldiers – less than the number of civilians killed with guns in the U.S. in an average two-year period.4

In the first seven years of the U.S.-Iraq War, over 4,400 American soldiers were killed. Almost as many civilians are killed with guns in the U.S., however, every seven weeks.5

Homicide

Guns were used in 12,632 homicides in 2007, comprising over 40% of all gun deaths, and nearly 69% of all homicides.6

On average, 33 gun homicides were committed each day for the years 2002-2007.7

Regions and states with higher rates of gun ownership have significantly higher rates of homicide than states with lower rates of gun ownership.8

Where guns are prevalent, there are significantly more homicides, particularly gun homicides.9

Suicide

Firearms were used in 17,352 suicides in 2007, constituting 55% of all gun deaths.10

Over 50% of all suicides are committed with a firearm.11

On average, 46 gun suicides were committed each day for the years 2001-2007.12

White males, about 40% of the U.S. population, accounted for over 80% of firearm suicides in 2007.13

A study of California handgun purchasers found that in the first year after the purchase of a handgun, suicide was the leading cause of death among the purchasers.14

Firearms were used in 45% of suicide deaths among persons under age 25 in 2007.15

More than 75% of guns used in suicide attempts and unintentional injuries of 0-19 year-olds were stored in the residence of the victim, a relative, or a friend.16

The risk of suicide increases in homes where guns are kept loaded and/or unlocked.17

Unintentional Deaths & Injuries

In 2007, guns were the cause of the unintentional deaths of 613 people.18

From 2001 through 2007, over 4,900 people in the United States died from unintentional shootings.19

Over 1,750 victims of unintentional shootings between 2001 and 2007 were under 25 years of age.20

People of all age groups are significantly more likely to die from unintentional firearm injuries when they live in states with more guns, relative to states with fewer guns. On average, states with the highest gun levels had nine times the rate of unintentional firearms deaths compared to states with the lowest gun levels.21

A federal government study of unintentional shootings found that 8% of such shooting deaths resulted from shots fired by children under the age of six.22

The U.S. General Accounting Office has estimated that 31% of unintentional deaths caused by firearms might be prevented by the addition of two devices: a child-proof safety lock (8%) and a loading indicator (23%).23

Unfortunately, sometimes killing is the only solution to a problem...

You can't reason with a lunatic, and if the lunatic is intent on causing death or serious injury to you or someone else, it may come down to being killed or killing them. You may have the right to not defend yourself, but you don't have the right to not defend others who depend on you (like children).

Same with criminals. It's not a matter of keeping your property, it's a matter of keeping your life (or someone else's).

To think otherwise is to live in delusion...

And about being killed and maimed in horrible ways, I have seen many cattle shot in the head when they were butchered for meat; they drop dead instantly. Few humans will die that painlessly from heart attacks, cancer, auto accidents, etc.

Okay, that is great. Now I want you to find how many americans own guns, and put those numbers against your figures of how many americans use guns for killing. I think you will find that the majority of guns are not used for this purpose. So my case still stands.

Killing happens, it's all through the Bible. If more Americans carried guns, less violent crime would happen. Look into the story of Kennesaw, Georgia. Think of the shootings in McDonalds, Columbine, etc. If one trained law abiding shooter was there, several lives would have been saved. Killing would still have happened, it's a fantasy to think otherwise, guns would have become the tool to lessen the killing.

No one has ever said "killing more people lessens killing." We have said that killing one criminal may be necessary to save many honest and innocent civilians.
