I am a very discriminating person.

Although I equate races, I do not equate cultures.
I do not equate the differences between people.

I sometimes discriminate on the basis of experience.
I sometimes discriminate on the basis of appearance.
I sometimes discriminate on the basis of philosophy, in particular politics and religion.

God seems to discriminate on the basis of grace.

I try as hard as I can do be a discriminating person. While this may not make me popular among certain parties today, I try to keep in mind that in earlier times "discriminating" was one of the highest compliments that you could pay to a person. "The discriminating reader" was a reader intelligent enough to distinguish good books from bad books. "The discriminating eater" cared enough about his or her food to separate the good stuff from the bad.

Ironically wah ti stypically meant be discrimination is more a failure to discriminate, it is seeing all members of a race, faith (or lack of faith) ethnic group or sexual orientation as the same. They are not, and the failure to dircriminate between individuals of these and other groups is now called 'discrimination'.

God does not "flip a coin". God discriminates on the basis of grace.

To discriminate is simply to differentiate between two things. Often we apply a secondary meaning to the "why" we may make a differentiation (e.g. prejudice, bias, etc.).

But to answer the question, yes, I absolutely discriminate - all the time.

Grace is something God gives us. Does he discriminate on the basis of something he gives us? Did he discriminate in handing out grace? Perhaps he discriminates on the basis of grace that he possesses? That seems to me to no different than saying "on a whim".

So I, too, am interesting in what the poster means by that.

To discriminate is to make distinction in treatment, showing partiality or prejudice.
Grace is unmerited favor, unearned or undeserved preference.

God discriminates on the basis of grace.

All of creation is an act of God's grace. Although God has created everything and everyone that has been created, there is that which God has not created. (see unicorn) There are people that God has not created. God has been picking and choosing, all along.

You are right to point out that grace is "one sided".
Grace is not in and of itself a criteria.
Grace leaves the giving of grace 100% up to the giver of grace.
That is the nature of grace,
and God makes no apologies for it.
The ONLY justification the God of the bible ever gives for doing what ever He wills with His creation is His absolute sovereignty over his creation and His creation's 100% contingency upon Him for its existence.

You are wrong to infer that God is somehow, some way, waiting to see what we do and then react to us. God acts, He cannot react.

It is a shame that discriminaiton usually gets bad press (racial sexual etc). There are good forms of discrimination and we ought not get the idea that it is necessarily a vice.

Of late, I've been hard pressed to find one page of the bible that does not call me to be discriminating.
I am to discriminate against all other gods, against all other women.
I'm to discriminate toward my parents and the household of faith.

I've been working closely, for the last couple of weeks, with a group of mennonite brothers. I have learned that they are some of the least judgemental people I've ever met; but they are a highly discriminating people.

Ameriacan multi-culturalism is a call to be indiscriminant. It equivocates all cultures, values and traditions. It equivocates all truth claims, religions and morals. Indiscrimnant sex and procreation are now here near the norm. Even taking is equated to giving.

A person floats at the edge of the world. IIRC Wittgenstein said the person was the "limit of the world" and Heidegeger said man "dwells alongside" it. He discriminates from there. It would be interesting to understand this in terms of genetics and brain states. Not only correlates of personhood and perception in a brain scan, but actually accounting for the phenomenology. Why on earth would discrimination from the phenomenological point of view, i.e. living and discriminating as an existent entity, have evolved? It is mind blowingly mysterious, and not much can be said except thinks like there must be some kind of function to it all in terms of survival value.
