What was he, I wondered?
:)
I always assumed that RCs were Christians

Matthew 23:15 Woe to ye Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! that ye are going about the Sea and the Dry/xhran <3584> to make one proselyte and whenever he may be becoming, ye are making him a son of geennhV twofold-more of ye-selves

I really learned a valuable lesson from this episode in my life.
A person may be describing something about themselves, but don't know the vocabulary to say what they mean.
Because they don't know the vocabulary, they won't recognize the synonymous meaning to what they are describing.
Since they are describing something personal, I am in mo position to tell them what they mean.
I am in no position, unless invited by them, to teach them the vocabulary synonymous with their description.
I just have to sit back and let each person tell it their own way, without judging, correcting, or otherwise imposing my perspective onto their experience.
At least, that's what I'm going to take from all this.

I agree the vocabulary is difficult... especially for the new believer.

Nothing really wrong with it... just takes some time.

Forgive me...

Let me express this same thought differently:

often I see people arguing, who really agree with each other. Often I try to get either side (or preferably both) to see what the other side is saying, esp the common ground.

A classic example of this was right before last Christmas. Jack the Catholic and I had some good dialogue, but developing any real understanding was thwarted by using the same terms to mean different things. Sort of like the "Mars vs Venus" series, we need a RC to Pr dictionary to translate! (Just one example of the phenomenon)

So, I was out with this guy tonight, and he was telling a foreign visitor how he converted from Catholicism to Christianity.

She looked so confused!

I explained to her that he meant that he transitioned from Catholicism to Protestantism, which she promptly understood.

What happened next was a misunderstanding that really blew my mind.

He began arguing with me that he was not a Protestant, but a Christian!
He did not believe what Protestants believe!
He did not recognize the Pope as authoritative.
He did not follow any kind of liturgy or recognize any church structure.
He believed in Christ alone as his Lord and Savior, and never even attended church as far as I could tell from what little I knew of him.

And, he really wanted me to know he wasn't a Protestant.
Even after I profusely apologized and left the table for over a half hour, he really refused to let it go.
He accused me of pigeon-holing him as a Protestant.
I guess when I was gone, the foreign lady drew him a picture, which he then understood, but he also shared with me that he didn't like me much, and wouldn't mind never speaking to me again.

What was he, I wondered?
A lot of Protestantism has caved in on the soteriological reforms achieved.
So many of them have reverted to Pelagian Free Will/Works theology, it's not surprising many people consider themselves post-protestant.

Post protestant ^_^

Hey, a lot even refuse the title Christian. I've been about "that close" to it most of my time following the Lord myself ... I just don't want to be seen denying Christ Himself, even though a lot of what has been done by professing christians I don't want to be associated with.
