That's nice and probably true. It's not helpful though. If you can tell me how knowing that what I have might be a genetic thing I got from my parents can help me get out of bed for more than a few hours a day and not be curled up in pain from only doing a few small tasks I'd be happy. Otherwise, what you said is not particularly useful.

Trying to explain genetics and hereditary illnesses is trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.

What about rejoicing in your sufferings for Christ? That's orthodox.

Thanks, ortho_cat.

Saw the doctor, apparently I have no detectable amount of manganese (essential for brain function) and very low amounts of numerous other minerals in my system, hooray.

A huge (100,000 units per ml, and several mls!) dose of Vit D and lots of supplements later I have an appointment to see the doctor again on Wednesday, probably for more tests and to try and figure out what's going on. My skin is very pale and almost grey in places, interesting. Tests should help, your prayers, please.

On the upside I got to Church today - to my old Antiochian parish, since Andrew overslept and we missed Church at our normal parish. The priest was very happy to see me and I was happy to see him, it's a lovely parish :) I feel so much better for having gone.

Andrew is making curry - the proper way with grinding the spices himself - in the kitchen just near me :) Yummm!

Hey, I tried to find an appropriate thread for asking questions like this but I didn't and I also didn't want to start an own thread for things like this so I hope you don't mind I posted it here. My question is, is there some reason for people to get upset if I cross my legs at an EO church while sitting down for the sermon? Because I did yesterday while visiting one and someone got angry at me for that... :sorry:

Hrm, probably because its a fairly casual posture, and we aren't supposed to be casual in church. Having seats at all is pretty indulgent.

It is considered disrespectful; I believe it has something to do with pointing the sole of your shoe towards others, and/or pointing them upwards towards heaven.

I think it's more that it's just a casual attitude. Same goes for crossing your arms or putting your hands in your pockets in Church, it would be inappropriate if you were attending the court of a monarch (or at a major political meeting, like in Congress or something) and it's inappropriate for Church.

Sit straight and attentive with your feet both on the floor and hands clasped in your lap and you're fine. It seems restrictive, but Church is a really big deal for us and we're very formal.

:amen: FWIW, I like Kyriaki's and Incariol's explanation better than mine :)

The person really needs to pay more attention to what is going on during liturgy and less attention to what others are doing. Are we that far out of Great Lent that we have all forgotten the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian?
"grant that I may see my own transgressions and not to judge my brother..."

I understand it - sure, they should pay attention to their own worship, but it's just plain rude and disrespectful to people from traditionally Orthodox cultures. It might just seem like polite etiquette to converts, but to a Russian or Greek person whose culture has been Orthodox for centuries it would be incredibly rude. FWIW, I've seen people do this - not in a Greek Church but an Antiochian one (at a person who was sitting with his legs crossed...and then went up for Holy Communion with his hands in his pockets!). And I completely understood why the person said what they did at the time.

They might be more sensitive than we think they should be, but I can at least see where they're coming from (living amongst cradle Orthodox with very few converts is good for gaining cradle perspective).

Don't take it to heart, Aino, just chalk it up as a learning experience :) We're nice, really, just very protective of certain things.
