  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am part of The Sabbath Keepers Motorcycle Ministry and we all wear vests that have the same main, big patch on the back identifying who we are. On the front, we get to chose what smaller patches to have. They can be found at various leather stores, in biker shops, and at biker rallies.

I have patches that say "John 3:16," "100% for Jesus", "These ARE My Church Clothes", "Exercise Daily - Walk With God", and "Jesus Freak".

It was brought up by two friends of mine, one who is a member of the group herself , and one who doesn't go to my church (she's Wiccan) that they thought that the "Jesus Freak" patch was derogatory to both myself and Christianity as a whole.

My Wiccan friend, who also happens to be of age to have gone through the flower power era, said that, historically, "Jesus Freak" was a term applied to people who were all weird and preached inappropriately. I chose the patch because I thought it'd show my level of devotion to, well, Jesus.

It'd be great to get as many answers as possible as to what first went through your mind when you read the title of this thread. If I get more negative answers than positive I'll have the patch removed.

Thanks for the input :)

Rottiedog,

The term 'Jesus Freak' instantly makes me think 'this person knows what it is to be delivered of much, to love much because of that deliverance, and to not be ashamed but willing to be the foolish thing God uses to confound the wise.'

Some of the lyrics to
'Jesus Freak' by D. C. Talk (also by Toby Mac)

Separated, I cut myself clean
From a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams
Been apprehended by a spiritual force
And a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced

(chorus)
What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak
What will people do when they find that it's true

I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak
There ain't no disguising the truth
[ain't no disguising the truth, no I ain't hiding the truth]

Kamikaze, my death is a gain
I've been marked by my Maker
A peculiar display
The high and lofty, they see me as weak
Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek

There was a man from the desert with naps in his head
The sand that he walked was also his bed
The words that he spoke made the people assume
There wasn't too much left in the upper room
With scabs on his back and hair on his face
They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate
YOU SEE The Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak
Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak

chorus

People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
My best friend was born in a manger
People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
My best friend was born in a manger

Another note:

'Jesus Freak' doesn't have the same connotation as it did for the 'flower child'.

"Jesus Freaks" written by DC Talk The Voice of the Martyrs and Toby Mac ; is also the name of a series of books which examines the lives of Christian martyrs.

The Jesus Freaks are a German evangelical (Christian) youth organization.
The movement uses the Alpha and Omega symbol to represent Jesus Christ.
- Wikipedia

The Jesus Freaks movement was created in September 1991 in Hamburg, Germany by Martin Dreyer. Dreyer, who would be ordained as a free church minister in 1993, based the organization on the Jesus People movement which began in the 1960s in the United States. In 1994 the organization established itself as the Jesus Freaks International, a non-profit group headquartered in Berlin. Over 100 groups or churches are established in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They also organize the annual Freakstock Christian music festival, which claims to be the biggest alternative Christian Festival in Europe.
- Wikipedia

Freakstock main stage in 2004
Critics cite the movement as leaning towards conservative fundamentalism,[1] and having the appearance of a closed society with a high level of peer pressure internally.[2] However, point out that they provide ministry to drug abusers, the homeless, and others often marginalized by the mainstream church. - Wikipedia

Well having been through those times myself you would not be a Jesus Freak if you ride bikes and have your own private homes.

The Jesus Freaks were for simple lifestyles, communes, organic living and getting back to the basics of how Jesus lived.

I can channel a Jesus Freak because there was one that lived near me back in the day. Smoked pot all the time and drew amazing pictures of Jesus and scenes from the bible. But could only do it when stoned. Couldn't draw a thing without pot. A sad young man when you get down to it.

To them your bike would represent a conundrum... "because man the bike is like being free man... and Jesus said the truth will set you free man right? But its made by a company man and they like sell it to you right man? And so they keep you from the freedom man because they don't give it away man. They should, they should be like Jesus told the rich man to give it away man. Then it would be free man and you would be free and we'd all be free like Jesus man. Its heavy man. The bike is free and the bike makes you a slave to a company. Heavy man."

I certainly hope you are not like that.

I don't see a problem with your patch, it's your heart that God is interested in, and your obedience to Him. Who knows? Your way of displaying your love for Him may well reach some that "traditional" witnesses can't or won't.

I used to be a part of a Cowboys for Christ study group. We wore (by choice, not required or anything) Wranglers (pants and jacket), On the back in gold lettering I had "HE LIVES!" and, below that "Cowboys for Christ". It started a few conversaitons and gave me the opportunity to witness....so, take courage in your walk and witness if the opportunity arises. Don't worry too much about the acceptance of others, as long as you are true to God, He will be true to you.

but, this is only my opinion, so........grain of salt.....

Dude, I can't stop laughing. I just about squirted snot all over the place when I read your post (I'm laying in bed with a cold). Anyway, I said I'm a member of the group. I didn't say I had a bike. (I bum rides off the other member's bikes). So, I guess I can be free and not be a slave to a company either. Way cool, huh dude? :D

Seriously, you can be a member and not have a bike. It just means that you're probably gonna be the one hauling the potluck food to the destination in the back of your van that's got peace signs and flowers all over it and smells like a 5-foot bong (just kidding - - although my mini-van is old it's not THAT old and I think pot stinks).

So, um, I can't remember what I was trying to say. Yes, I do live in California and I like to surf and, uh, dude, it's all good.

P.S. Thanks everyone for all the responses! I'm going to print them out . . . Oh, never mind.

To a large amount of the american population "Jesus Freak" carries negativity with it and is perceived as someone who goes too far with their belief to the point that it makes them a "Freak".

However there is also a lot of people who perceive it much differently...in a more positive way.

Personally I think you should do what you feel! I think it is a cool patch.

Unless you were sober and serving in the military. They its so clear that you wish you could forget it.

But there were a lot of people like that. It was all groovy, heavy, cool and copacetic. I can't say much, when I was that man's age it was buddy this, pal that and things were neato.

Every generation make linguists cringe. I'm sure sink me and hey nonny no made people cringe too.
