Hair Care...

Okay,

I know this will be shocking to everyone but here goes... ;)

I am a Torah Observant Christian Man which means I have hair down to my shoulders (gasp)... Yes I know what 1 Corinthians 11 says but I also know what Lev. 19 says and the two must be reconciled together instead of being mutually opposed... Without getting to debate (which this thread is not about) my beliefs are that men hair should not be shorter then shoulder length which is biblically defined as short opposed to long hair which is from lower back downward and uncut (shorned). So with that said and knowing I have shoulder length hair which is still new to me since I came to this conviction about 2 years ago and took me a year to grow it in I have some questions for all those ladies who have longer length hair and hair care.... :p

So what do you ladies do to prevent hair breakage and stubborn hair fly-aways from it? I believe that hair for men should be longer but I also believe it should be kempted and not sloppy looking. I have tried to go down the organic/natural way of keeping hair, Washing a few times a week with baking soda, doing organic conditioner rinse on other days, deep conditioning with coconut oil and jojoba oil, using only wide tooth combs, etc. But due to medicines I have been on it has not been enough and I have numerous stubborn hair breakage that just won't stay down.

I still believe organic and natural is the best way to go but not always possible due to said issues so I discovered the John Frieda Line and started to using their conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair serum, and smoothing creme which has helped but still have to many hair breakage very day.

I should say that I do take internal required vitamins, Biotin, Iron, B5, B6, B12, and D3.

But I still have problems which does not look very nice and forget about a pony tail, every time I try one I use a hair full of hair in the process..

So what do you all do? and What do you recommend? :)

Mikhael

A hair length is mainly due to genes. Your hair won't grow any longer than it is genetically programmed to do - there's not a lot you can do about that (not anything, really, except hair extensions).

The best thing to keep it looking healthy is to trim the ends regularly so it doesn't look scraggly and keep it clean. Keeping the ends trimmed will make it look fuller and healthier - it's really is best to sacrifice some length as much as that may hurt).

I don't know what kind of hair you have, but "fly away" usually means thin and dry, but breaking hair sounds like it may be coarse and kinky. At any rate, normal shampoo rather than baking soda will clean it nicely with little damage. You could try pulling it back and only washing your scalp every other day (no less than that if you are at all like me) and the rest of your hair every week or so - this might cut down on breakage due to combing wet hair.

Creme rinse or conditioner will help keep your hair both from flying away and breakage (by making it easier to comb out). Don't comb it while it's wet (it's likely to stretch and break) and don't blow dry it if it's fragile (as it will dry out further).

Grease and oil on long hair is not a good look for most people, especially if it is at all thin or straight. I know some people use hair product on dry hair, but I have no experience with that.

You might get more help if you describe the your hair some more - is it thick or thin, curly, wavy or dead straight, coarse or fine? Women with hair similar to yours will best be able to advise you.

Thanks Daisy...

Length wise my hair can grow alot longer but I am keeping it at shoulder length.. My wife always makes sure that she cuts it once a month so it does not get to long :)

My hair is a bit weird.. It is very very thick but very very straight.. It is very coarse but very a mixture of fine hairs through out. It does dry out very quickly.. It seems that the fine hairs are what is breaking.. My hair is a dirty golden blonde color..

Perhaps I can snap a few photos of the back and sides to get a better detail.. It might take me a few days to do so..

As for combing, I always finger comb when wet and use a very large wide tooth comb.. But the hair breakage is never when combing but during the day..

Anyway Thanks for the advice,

Michael

This morning I thought of this thread. One thing if your hair is healthy, blow drying can make it look smooth and shiny. When I don't blow dry, my hair looks rough and flyaway - maybe that is the problem the OP was having.

For breakage, I really like Redken Anti-Snap and Joico KPak Reconstructor. Do not use these everyday; too much protein is bad for the hair, but these are some of the best on the market.

I also really like Johnson & Johnson No More Tears (Tangles?) Detangling Spray, combined with It's a 10! Miracle Leave-In. Both help with tangles (I have fine, long hair) and split ends.

Hello,

Blessings be upon you!

It's nice to see another guy here with long hair! I've grown my hair long as a part of my Nazarite identidy. I don't have problems with hair breakage though, I wash my hair 2-3 times each week. I use a product called 'Pantene', shampoo it and then comb the conditioner through. It comes out nice, soft and shiny. My hair is golden/red colour and very wavy.

Can I ask? Do you get alot of negative responses for having long hair?

Alot of people try and pull this verse when they see men with long hair
"Doth not even nature itself teach you that if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" 1 Corinthians 11:14

I would like to explain this verse, I hope you all don't mind. Alot of Biblical men had long hair - Samuel, Samson, John the Baptist... Numbers 6:5 & 7 even speak of the Nazarite vows’ requirement of not cutting the hair. Judges 16:17 state that Samson never had a razor that touched his head. Nowhere in the Bible are they condemned.

In 2 Kings 1:8 the messenger’s description of a man with long hair and a leather girdle caused the king to instantly realize it was the prophet Elijah. He must have had long hair indeed. The Hebrew words the servant used to describe Elijah were ba’al sa’ar which actually means "lord of hair."

In 2 Samuel 14:25-26 Absalom’s long hair was praised!

In 1 Corinthians 11:14 the Greek word 'komao' is translated as "long hair", which means tresses of hair or locks. It comes from the root word 'to take care of', which points to some kind of preparation to make the hair appear in tresses. This Greek word 'komaro' only appears three times in the Bible and all three times are right here in the 11th chapter of 1 Corinthians. The usual Greek word for hair is 'thrix'. It is very likely that Paul was referring to a Pagan hairstyle that was very feminine and he was condemning men for having this particular style.

In Leviticus 19:27 God commands that men should not cut the hair on the corners of their head ("temples") or the corners of their beard.

Surely if all these Prophet's of God had long hair that it was clearly not shameful for men to have long hair. I think only some particular styles were condemned for men to have, as we see in 1 Timothy 2:9 and 1 Peter 3:3. Would God encourage Samuel, Samson, John the Baptist, Elijah.. and others to have long hair, if it was shameful to them?

Hi Zatara,

Blessings be upon you as well..

Actually I have had nice responses from women out in public and of course I get nice responses from men and women regarding the beard..

Many the negative responses I get come from my wife's family who are fundamentalist Baptist who are hyper-separatist.. They associate my look with the Hippie movement and rebellion of the Hippie movement even after trying to explains my reasons from scripture... My wife at first had a problem with it but since have calmed down and admits she likes it.. But she does not want me really to go past shoulder length.. Historically mens hairs have not been considered long until it gets past mid back. So I have to live with shoulder length.. :)

My views of 1 Corinthians 11 is a bit different...

Verse 15: "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a [First] covering."

and Verse 14: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?"

This is all in the context of headcoverings which are an additional covering over that of the natural hair covering. Paul is using an analogy of the natural covering of hair to argue for headcoverings.

So then we need to define long by scripture and what is shameful vs. what is not shameful..

Verse 6 gives us the clue for women... It says "For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered."

Paul is arguing that if women do not add the additional cloth covering then let her be shorn or shaven. Then he said it is shameful for a women to be shorn or shaven.. So what is shaven? it is removal of all the hair right down to the scalp.. But what is Shorn? Shorn is cutting the hair.. See women's hair would never have been cut or it would already be shorn. Anytime a hair cut is given it is shorned or in other words cut.. So from those who words we get a definition of what is long.. It is the uncut terminal ends of hair growth. I did a study once of pictographs, drawings and paintings down through ages of women and before a certain century they all had long hair down to their feet and often plaited or braided and then covered in a cloth headcovering. Remember Mary who annointed Yeshua's feet she then used her hair, which had to be long enough to wash the feet of her Savior.

What about Men's hair... What is required and what is considered to long..

Leviticus 19:27 "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard."

Not only are we not to mar the beard we are not to round the corners of our head... Matthew Henry said that rounding the corner of our head would be to cut our hair in a way that makes the head look like a globe.. This is what the pagan heathens did.. Egypt, Babylon, Romans and Greeks. They cut their hairs to make their heads look like the celestial globes that they worshiped. God is then saying that we are not to round our head like the celestial globes in the sky.. That means shoulder length would be a bare minimal according to God's law.

Men should also not grow to terminal ends like that of women.. Of course terminal ends differ depending on different women.. But they are normally from the thighs downward with a few who stop around the maxis glutes and the tailbone.. So a Church Ecumenical Council (Forgot which one and will need to look it up for you) declared that men should not grow beyond the belt line since determining terminal ends from anywhere between the tailbone to the feet, of course there are exceptions like the nazerite vow. Though historically in ancient Israel it was consider long after the mid-back or what some might call an undergarment line for females.

But of course none of this distracts from what you say with regards to the Greek word for hair for women.

Anyway, this is why I have shoulder length hair and why my wife has unshorned hair that is so far down to her thighs. (If anybody ask, no her hair does not look raggedy, she takes care of it and properly oils it so it look very nice).

For some reason I keep losing too much hair and the hairs are breaking really badly even after deep conditioning with coconut oil and using other things... I think it is my medications for arthritis and immune system compromise but I can't seem to stop it or slow it down.. Even after taking lots of vitamins for over a year.. And the fly-aways are brutal.. Nothing I use will hold them down.. They are so stubborn.. Of course the winter is not helping but making things worse.... :(

Michael

Shalom Michael,

Thanks for this information, it was really interesting to read! :)

You're very lucky that you get so many compliments! I've always seemed to have problems with people telling me I should cut my hair short and should shave...

I'm very sorry that you're losing alot of your hair, have you ever tried a natural remedy for Arthritis?

I have problems with my hair in the wind aswell, it goes everywhere. Since it's quite long enough to tie back, I think I'm going to start wearing a hat or other head covering out next time.

Take care :)

Yaaaa other dudes with long hair!!!! My constant goal is to get my thick brown slightly wavy hair...as close to my head and as straight as possible. Lil things I've learned is to use Luke warm water to wet my hair thus opening the pores for cleansing. Barely use any of your shampoo and only apply to scalp. Don't make bubbles out the shampoo like the commercials. As long as the shampoo gets to most of your scalp after about a minute. Rinse with. Slightly cold water. Once ur hair has stopped dripping, apply conditioner to hair using your fingers to comb it through. 3 mins tops rinse with colder water than before but not terribly cold.( Tames flyaways). Blot your hair dry CAREFULLY. Takes a lil time but it's worth it. Cleanse hair every other day.

The shampooing and conditioning process is vital if you want compliments from almost every chick you meet lol.

My excuse for long hair is that I'm a guitarist, and Jesus had long hair.

You don't need an excuse if you read the other posts. Do you have the beard aswell? :)

Well, somehow I actually do have a legit beard at the age of 16. Haha:). I have shaved every day since I was five. I had visible peach fuzz so I shaved everywhere..... That might be why. I'm a grizzly man>:]

I have hip-length hair, which is as far as it grows, that tends toward dryness. To offset this, I use shampoo primarily on the scalp. At the last minute I work the shampoo to the ends, right before I rinse. Too much washing can dry the hair out. For conditioner I reverse the process. Using about three times as much conditioner as I did shampoo, I apply it to the ends first and work my way to the scalp. I leave the conditioner in as I do other shower-y things, and then I rinse out.

It is important never to brush your hair when it's wet. That's when the hair shaft is weakest. Also, that 100-strokes-a-day practice that some of us remember is a myth. Brushing excessively strips your hair of protein and leads to more breakage. Brush only as necessary to smooth out tangles. And yes, I rely on that Johnson & Johnson detangler too.

I braid my hair when I want to prevent tangling, but then this applies only if it is long enough to get into a braid. If not, several smaller braids may do the same thing.

The reasoning behind this myth is that hats because of their closed nature, cuts off vital air for the hair follicles causing them to die prematurely and leaving a bald scalp. In reality, oxygen which is required by the hair follicles is not imbibed from the external atmosphere but from the human bloodstream.

Girls or boys who are young should not ignore their hairs they should take care of their hairs from this age for long life of their hairs. Hair care is not difficult as some people think and let it go. Little care everyday helps you to find out a difficult way to prevent your hair from damage and loss.

Aloe- Vera:

Nature gives us a plant named Aloe- Vera. You can easily get it from anywhere and can use it for any kind of hair problem.

Yoghurt:

Easily available at mostly homes. You can apply it with oil on your hair.

Henna:

you can use henna also for your hairs then using any other chemical color. It gives your hair color and makes them shiny with natural way.

There are so many homely tips for your hair. You can use them and keep your hair according to your desire by natural way.

Some girls love to have long hairs but some times they unable to have this desire because of their hair with bad quality. But massage with oil or regular oiling of your hair can help you to grow your hair more long.

It’s unbelievable but a hair trimming is also helping in growth of long hairs. It removes two point hairs and let your hair grow straight and also make them heavy. A little hair cut is not bad for your desire of long hair growth.

I take pride in my hair, I try to keep it healthy. Here's something that really works. It's cheap and all natural...

"Restore shine and softness to your hair with an almond oil hair wrap. Almond oil is rich in vitamin E and magnesium, which helps improve the texture of your hair. Distribute warm almond oil through your hair with a comb, covering everything from root to tip. When your hair is fully saturated, wrap it in a warm towel and leave covered for 30-60 minutes before washing as usual."

I've tried other oil treatments and this is my favorite. My hair is so soft and shiny after. If you try it just be sure to rinse it well after.
