  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Bible is great. I would start reading in Luke, John or Acts. They are great. I would definitely start in the New Testament or Psalms.

There is some trashy teaching out there, for sure. But there is some awesome uplifting teaching as well. At the beginning, don't get hung up on all the finer points of theology. Work on getting closer to God and allow Him to guide you into the truth.

If you're from a Southern Baptist heritage, the Baptist Bookstore offers a number of well-considered books. I think they're now called "LifeWay" Bookstores. Recommended.

I started out Southern Baptist, and I've held onto many of its theological distinctives I learned as a child. They're sound, listen carefully. Most of your teachers are dedicated to the Bible's thinking, so you can listen and see what the Bible says, and they can explain how they got to where they are.

Are there errors? Yeah. There're errors in all human thinking. You're gonna make mistakes; they are, too. Expect it; expect to bring your mistakes to God for help fixing them. God's provided Someone that fixes us. Christianity isn't about being right about everything; it's about relying on the One Who can fix our wrongs.

God's also talked about this interaction with other Christians in pretty serious terms: communion, koinonia (a kind of "fellowship" that isn't just having coffee with one another, but sharing our lives with one another), encouragement, even different factions within the church are there so we can see through to which one is confirmed by God (1 Cor 11:19). And of course there's sharing with one another what you've learned. That's all huge. God's built a family of believers around you. Learn. Listen. Contribute back.

This is probably one of the best answers I got! Thank you so much, and thanks to everyone else who has given there time to respond to my post!

I have found that books, books, books cause me to set aside my bible. There are 66 of the most amazing books right in your bible. The Gospel of John is an amazing place to start. God promises to give you understanding. Try this.....

Pray for God to teach you His word.....Open up and start reading slowly. Take your time and meditate on the passage. If you feel like God is speaking to you....make a little note. If something doesnt make sence, ask Him to reveal it to you.

The commentary section of blueletterbible.org is amazing. My favs are Chuck smith and Matthew Henry (Both have comments on every verse in the whole bible)

If you like to listen Mike Holm is a great pastor/teacher his audio is verse by verse
read John Chapter 1 and then try listening to the teaching of John chapter 1. Just scroll down and look for John 1
cctampa.org
Go to messages and through the new testament and find John Chapter 1

Ask for the One Year Bible for Christmas. Every day you read passages from the OT, the NT, Psalms and Proverbs (all in chronological order). It's good timing because you can start fresh on Jan. 1st. By the end of the year you will have read the entire Bible. I bought it on Kindle so I it's readily available wherever I go (when I travel I just take my Kindle along). :)

Thank you so much it was alot of help, my next question would of been where should I start when I read the bible because i always get a mix of answers, but you just answered my question thank you.
There are multiple right answers. A popular one is the gospel of John (4th book in the New Testament) followed by 1 John (one of this same John's letters to the churches, it's the 5th book from the back). I started out with Matthew and went on to Revelation. There are Bible-in-a-year plans which mix it up between the Old Testament and the New Testament. So you have options!

It is great to be cautious. there is allot of deception out there. as you get to know God you will grow in decernment and will be able to tell for yourself what is from God and what is from the devil. Remember that Scripture is your Standard. It is the Living Word of God.

Get a New American Standard Bible. it is by far the best english translation of scripture. the Message is satans translation of scripture.

I've read a lot of Christian books since I got saved, and most of them I wouldn't recommend to anybody that is truely seeking God. However, there is an author that really impressed me with his understanding of the Scriptures and his ability teach through his writings. His name is Watchman Nee.

Although I would suggest reading anything you can find that he's written, I would highly recommend his book "The Spiritual Man." I can promise you that you won't be disappointed with it.

Blessings,

Alan
