A senior woman drops a newspaper into a street trash container and is fined $100 dollars for failing to recycle.

How much you wanna bet that if this city has to cut its budget, police and fire fighters will be the first to go, but the Environmental Enforcers will keep their jobs?

This is how municipalities punish voters for making them cut the budget. Essential services go first, but this kind of crap is immune.

Sounds about right. I mean, who needs cops and firefighters when you have a good recycling program. God will bless the community with peace and protection for following the principles of good environmental stewardship.

Do you have a link to this story? I have a feeling that there's more to it.

Its stupid. The cop should be reprimanded for lacking any sense of judgement.

Actually, I'd rather see the policy changed and the bureaucracy/politicians (whoever was responsible for the policy), than the cop reprimanded. He/she was only doing her job.

That excuse didn't work at Nuremburg.

Whaaaaaat. Are you seriously comparing an officer fining someone for littering to a Nazi war criminal?
Its just a matter of degree. Enforcing a ridiculous law make your culpable for its ridiculousness. Did you even read the article? The stupid cop went out of her way to annoy and fine this old lady, who admitted it was a mistake and offered to recify it. Now, this STUPID cop rejected the overature and ticketed her anyway. WE don't need cops like this, who get a badge and get drunk on its power. The only public service she is qualified for is scraping gum off the bottom of movie theater seats.

If everyone adhered to the behavior that you're suggesting, society would fall apart. We all do things that we don't necessarily want to do, and that others believe to be wrong or immoral. She had every legal right to fine that old lady, despite the severity of the law. In fact, she had an obligation to fine that woman.

Put it this way. Say the officer was a single mother, and her income was the only source of provision for her family. Should she risk being fired if she doesn't perform her job correctly?

And your argument of degrees is a nonexistent one. She did not violate any fundamental human rights, as the Nazis did.

I am sorry you two like capitulating to brainless authority.

We agreed with you. We recognized that the fine was outrageous. Just because we disagreed with your comparison of a petty issue to the Nuremberg Trials, you insult us? That's pretty low.

As I said, it is a matter of degree. To be complicit in enforcing something as petty as a recycling law lends itself to being willing to enforce laws with more dire consequences. Its like marijuana being a gateway drug. Statistical evidence is replete with evidence that people who become addicted to heroin almost universally begin with drinking or tugging on a blunt. You start with a small thing, become accustomed to it, and it opens up acceptance to do a more severe thing. Power works in the same way that addictive processes work.

I respectfully (key word, respectfully) disagree. Look at George Washington. He had the chance to become a sovereign leader of the United States, but he imposed restrictions on his office.

He is the exception to the general principle. There aren't alot of them. And Washington WAS addicted to ambition and power in his youth. Read the story of Fort Wilderness. That fiasco happened because of his naivity and bravado. Washington was one of the prime contributors to the increased tensions that lead to the French and Indian War. Luckily, for us, he learned some lessons and applied them to his life.

1. Your argument for the addiction of power is still unconvincing. You don't give any scientific evidence supporting your claim.

2. You still do not realize how much of an overstatement your Nuremberg Trial reference was. Six million people were murdered. A woman is fined one-hundred dollars. I don't care what parallels you can draw, this is in no way a reasonable analogy.
