  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From Yahoo News:

Pope Benedict XVI says in a new book that condoms can be justified for male prostitutes seeking to stop HIV, a stunning turnaround for a church that has long opposed condoms and a pontiff who has blamed them for making the AIDS crisis worse.

The pontiff made the comments in a book-length interview with a German journalist, "Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times," which is being released Tuesday. The Vatican newspaper ran excerpts on Saturday.

Church teaching has opposed condoms because they're a form of artificial contraception although it has never released an explicit policy about condoms and HIV. The Vatican has been harshly criticized in light of the AIDS crisis.

Benedict said that for male prostitutes — for whom contraception isn't the central issue — condoms are not a moral solution. But he said they could be justified "in the intention of reducing the risk of infection."

He called it "a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way of living sexuality."

I agree with the pope... for the male prostitute, condom usage would be last on his list of sins committed, he needs to worry about.

LOL...

If you are gay- using a condom can not add to the sin.

But in no way should anyone in their right mind take this as any kind of affirmation of condom usage amongst heterosexuals.

Just because they would be reasonable to use in obscure instances doesn't make their usage any less sinful.

The real solution to male prostitution is the abolition of prostitution as a whole, not using condoms as a means to "protect" oneself. I actually agree with Benedict on this issue and I can see where he's coming from, but I don't think his thoughts on this were particularly appropriate. (Not wrong, just inappropriate)

That's what I think.

(Although maybe I'm being a bit unreasonable with expecting prostitution to end. I know that realistically, it probably won't stop until Judgment day.)

Man I feel like the Journalism fact police.

At least in this case the quotes are given from an actual book. Unfortunately the book is not released, so we can't check things that way.

It says that excerpts were given in the "Vatican Newspaper" which I am assuming means L'Osservatore Romano (since news sources go there all the time to attribute things to "the Pope" or "the Vatican.") Unfortunately, these excerpts aren't in the English Weekly Edition. The other languages vary a little, but in the ones that I can read something seem to discuss the same topics. But at the same time the print newspaper is I believe different from the online version, so who knows.

I guess we'll need to wait and see for the full remarks.

It's Yahoo News, so take it with a grain of salt.

From Reuters: Pope says condoms sometimes permissible to stop AIDS | Reuters

From Canada.com: Pope Benedict: Condoms acceptable ’in certain cases’

From The Telegraph: Pope approves use of condoms in fight against Aids - Telegraph

From the BBC: BBC News - Pope Benedict condones condom use in some cases - book

I just wanted to offer a few sources other than Yahoo.

I pray that what the Pope said is properly understood in its context, and that people do not begin jumping to the conclusion that the Holy See is suddenly condoning condom use in general, or becoming 'more liberal', or any of the other arguments I can see starting up over this. This has to be taken in context: it is about the Pope declaring that in a situation where contraception is NOT the issue at hand, making a situation that is already sinful and wrong even WORSE would be the wrong focus, and so an exception could be made in specific cases.

Hmmmmmmmmmm....... I don't know what to think of these comments. :(
Here's what to think of it, don't trust the media. They are almost always wrong when it comes to reporting on the Catholic faith. Remember that time when the media reported that the Catholic Church had changed her teaching on limbo? The truth was that the Church had not changed anything about the teaching. Wait for the official papal encyclical to come out, and read it directly from that.

I'm with you. Of course we have had experience with the media's failure when it comes to Catholic teaching. It was the media that claimed that the Vatican would say that artificial birth control was fine and dandy. (Folks were really taken in when the Vatican came out with Humanea Vitea.) And we can thank the media for all the silly experiments with the liturgy when they got the beautiful documents of Vatican II wrong.

The thing the media is most consistent with is being wrong about the Catholic faith.

And Fox News and MSNBC have never been wrong? Like I was saying, don't trust any of the media when it comes to anything that has to do with the Catholic faith. Let's wait for the official papal encyclical and read it directly from that before letting the media get us all spun up over what is probably nothing.

I have a bad feeling about this, and my spirit has been heavy all evening since hearing this. If it really is as the media are making it sound, I believe the Holy Father's opinion could be very, very damaging and a thousand steps backward. HOWEVER, further investigation and what I've heard from the folks at Catholic Answers strongly suggests that this is a terrible distortion of the Holy Father's actual opinion and that he is NOT suggesting that the use of condoms is ever morally defensible.

I can't wait until Thursday to find out more.

Yea, don't doubt the holy father. Look at it as an opportunity to catechize. Remember sin is proportional.

IMO, the Pope is saying is that there is a glimmer of hope in the individual who under certain circumstances, are 'trying' to do the moral thing when protecting their partner of an STD. He's talking about the individual's conscience alone and not that the use of condoms itslelf under certain circumstances are morally acceptable.
