  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do not believe there is a place of eternal torment and suffering for anybody. I believe that there is a purification for those who require purification. I could also be convinced to believe some people are so wicked they are simply annihilated, but I certainly do not believe they are tormented forever.

Hello.
What are the Jews beliefs in hell as believed in the religions of Islam and Christianity?
And/or how do they differ? Thank you

Cool topic!

The Jewish reality is based on what you get as a physically living being. They have no after life in their religion.

When you are dead you are dead.

Some folks actually disagree with that and I am inclined to agree with those folks, :) that actually disagree.

As a Christian, one life is enough even if there are more, because you are saved. As a Jew it is grab it now, and if you can, God is with you.

just love?

Christian Scripture seems to indicate that after Jesus returns and then after Satan is loosed for a little while, that there will be a final judgement and that some folks are not going to be happy about that. But that is after the return of our Lord and Savior, and He has not returned yet. We as Christians are waiting for this.

(When looking in the index for Hell)

Second Tractate Bava Metzi'a(The Middle Gate)

Chapter 4 - All descend to Hell? [Surely not! What he meant was,] All descend to Hell and then return except for three, who descend but do not ascend, and these are they: one who sleeps with another man's wife, one who puts another to shame in public and one who uses an offensive nickname for someone.

(Footnote - Rabbi Hanina seems to understand Hell as a place of purgation.(emphasis mine))

(When looking in the index for Gehinnom/Hell)

Twelfth Tractate Hagiga (The Festival Sacrifice)

Chapter 2 - When The Other died [the angelic 'judges' in the world beyond the grave] said, He cannot be sentenced [to punishment], nor can he be admitted to the World to Come. He cannot be sentenced [to punishment] since he has engaged in [the study of] Torah; he cannot be admitted to the World to Come since he has sinned.
Rabbi Meir said, Better they should sentence him [to punishment], so that [when his sin is purged] he can be admitted to the World to Come. When I die I shall make [sure that] smoke arises from his grave.

(Footnote - Elisha will be punished for his sin by being burnt, and when his sin is purged he will be able to enter the World to Come.) (emphasis mine)

What about a type of "limbo/purgatory" that is viewed in some denominations of Christianity?

http://www.christianforums.com/t7490145/
How can Roman Catholics say purgatory does NOT deny the atoning nature of Christ's sh

First of all what does the word "sh" stand for? :) I think that it is one of the keys to your question :) .

I am not sure that the Catholic Church is Jewish and most consider them (the Catholic Church) a bit pagan. Which they (the Catholic Church) probably are. But we all do have the option of Jesus because of their gifts, in spite of their sins as Christian reps. Ideally their sins should be straightened out, but that should be a topic that has nothing to do with Judaism, or maybe it does :) ?

just love,

tuck :)

Is that 'good interesting' or 'bad interesting'? :o

Dave you are very awake and do not trust me :)

What you have created is "good" interesting and that is me personally being honest.

Everyone should ask your question when dealing with me. If pinned down, I will be honest about whether I am being honest or not.

just love,

Great question. Most Christians believe in an ever-burning hell because of the disagreeable people they want to see in it . However there is little scriptural support for that idea.

The wages of sin is "death", not eternal life in torment. At the judgement many will suffer the second death, not sentenced to eternal torment. That is reserved for wicked spirits (that cannot die and are in eternal torment because they will be imprisoned forever).

Not true. Judaism does hold belief in an after life.
The resurrection of the dead is one of the Rambam's 13 principles of faith, something Orthodox Jews ascribe to.

A verse from the Qur'an...

[2:80] Some (Jews) have said, "Hell will not touch us, except for a limited number of days." Say, "Have you taken such a pledge from God? God never breaks His pledge. Or, are you saying about God what you do not know?"
Salam JJW
