  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus was a Rabbi, not a Priest

(Hey, this ice looks really thin)

Vatis: what makes you think that "the teachings of Jesus' Father" are worthless? And no, your opinion on the matter has no bearing whatsoever on His love for you.

Jesus loves you anyways. It's true, but it sounds kind of accusatory. ;-)

Otherwise He'd be going against his teachings of "loving all", and He really hated people that didn't walk the talk from what I understand.

I'm pretty sure He still loves some of us more than others [sure I'm loveable, but there are certainly more loveable people who are like... saving busloads of orphans and kittens every day], but that's probably not canon.

Is it the scripture that's dangerous? Lots of people interpret those passages in different ways and are not hateful to homosexuals or believe in literal creation. I think it has more to do with the individual.

Yes it depends on the individual...but that doesn't matter.
A gun is a good analogy, most people will never harm another human being with it, but some will.
Same thing applies to the bible, not everyone hates gays etc, but the bible gives them a reason to do so.

I don't think any reasonable person is going to hate gay people so passionately from a few lines in the Bible, especially when stuck next to the part about how eating shellfish is just as bad. I think that kind of hate is learned from other people - or people who use the Bible to justify their pre-existing bias.

Awitch had the perfect answer to your homo-basher excuse line of thinking, although he left out the part about hating your brother equating to murder. (That would be a biggie on the to-don't list, btw)

Sure there are lots of moral guidelines in the bible and it preaches love and whatnot

you say he loves me regardless of what I think, but still I'll go to hell if I don't believe in him? Doesn't sound all too loving.

Ah, "love and whatnot." Book chapter verse for that?

You'll find a pattern: as long as there is breath there is hope, but the mercy door does close.

My first Pastor had an interesting vision on this:

he was in the middle of a crowd, but it was unusual. Instead of a normal crowd, there were lines of people, as far as the eye could see.

He was instructed to push each one over a cliff, that he knew was the great divide separating hell from everything else. Obviously more than a little distressed by this, the answer to his questions was:

these are the people you were sent to Preach the Gospel to, but didn't.

Right. This is the sort of stuff that doesn't reflect very well on the idea of a God who loves people. Certainly it is the sort of story that when taught to the young and vulnerable messes up minds and leads to a great deal of unnecessary mental and emotional suffering. Doesn't matter whether you actually believe this is a story simply used by God to scare a person into action (as though that is a good way to get somebody to act anyway). This sort of "revelation" cannot help being a dominant factor in influencing some people towards faith in a very unhealthy way. Your pastor should be ashamed of himself if he shares this sort of thing in public to people who look up to him.

I'm trying to think of an adequate analogy. It's a little bit like me having a nightmare in which I kill one of my children...and then telling them that if they don't change their behaviour this will become reality. Horrific and abusive.

Aye, that's the kind of "party logic" that makes my hackles rise, reminding me all too clearly of the fascist regimes of early 20th century Europe.
If God's "administration" was like that, I'd be the first one to join the resistance, even if it meant facing insurmountable odds and sure defeat. I'd simply feel morally compelled to do so, even knowing that it would be a futile struggle.

I agree 100% with this.

Wholehearted agreement.
