It has been.

The Knights Templar carried it down from Mt Ararat, reassembled it, loaded it with the ark of the covenant and all the scrolls from the Library of Alexandria, and sailed it to secret island somewhere just south of Bermuda.

2 Maccabees 2.4-10

It was also in the same document that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God. 5Jeremiah came and found a cave-dwelling, and he brought there the tent and the ark and the altar of incense; then he sealed up the entrance. 6Some of those who followed him came up intending to mark the way, but could not find it. 7When Jeremiah learned of it, he rebuked them and declared: ‘The place shall remain unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy. 8Then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord and the cloud will appear, as they were shown in the case of Moses, and as Solomon asked that the place should be specially consecrated.’

9 It was also made clear that being possessed of wisdom Solomon offered sacrifice for the dedication and completion of the temple. 10Just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifices, so also Solomon prayed, and the fire came down and consumed the whole burnt-offerings.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has it, but that's just me.

No one is allowed to see it except the high priest. Not even the Ethiopian president.

The Ark of the Covenant at Axum cannot be seen by anyone but the High Priest of Axum, an elderly and especially holy monk who is charged with its care and preservation for life. He cannot leave the small yard that surrounds the chapel, and he is expected to name his successor on his deathbed. The present custodian with this privilege and burden is named Abba Tesfa Mariam.

The authors of the abovementioned books on the Lost Ark were unsuccessful in their attempts to gain access to the relic. In fact, not even the Ethiopian president is allowed to see it. The Ark used to be taken out on a procession once a year, but due to the recent war and tensions in the area, it remains locked in its shrine full-time.
One recent British explorer was told that these restrictions are for his own safety, for "if I approached the Ark I would be punished - the theory is that would become invisible and unleash upon me its terrible power - I would be killed outright, probably incinerated." He was told that even seeing one of the blessed replicas placed in all Ethiopian churches could have this effect

I know there are a few accounts of the OT Hebrews dying who tried to touch, or gaze into the ark, who were not levitical priests. Others believe the Ark may be in the underground corridors under the Dome of the Rock. However is it currently closed off by the Islamic authorities.

I know there are a few accounts of the OT Hebrews dying who tried to touch, or gaze into the ark, who were not levitical priests. Others believe the Ark may be in the underground corridors under the Dome of the Rock. However is it currently closed off by the Islamic authorities.

Even the priests and Levites could not look at the ark because it was in the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle, where only the high priest was allowed to enter and then only once per year, on the Day of Atonement, and the smoke of the incense hid the mercy seat over the ark, where God appeared, from view (Lev. 16). No one was allowed to touch the ark, not even while it was being moved (as we see in the example of Uzzah in 2 Sam. 6).

Even if the ark were found today, it would no longer be holy as it was in OT times, because Jesus inaugurated a new and living way for us to enter directly into God's presence, not by means of the blood of animals and not through the mediation of an earthly priest:
Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh,
21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (NASB)
The ark, wherever it is, is no longer set apart for God's use. We don't need it since the Spirit of God dwells in us, not in a building.

Do you believe the Ark of the Covenant will ever be found?

I sure hope so. I'm really curious to see what such a treasure looks like with my own eyes. (And if it's already in a known location, I hope it to be publically revealed.)

Most likely. I believe Maccabeus was from God and I accept 1 and 2 Maccabees as canon.

The book itself declares it is non-divinely inspired, but rather a potentially imperfect account of history. (2 Macc 15, 38-39)

That said, I do enjoy it as a very interesting historical account.

If it was taken out on a procession once a year, you'd think there would be more reliable accounts of it it. This part is particularly interesting since the British guy was told "if I approached the Ark I would be punished - the theory is that would become invisible and unleash upon me its terrible power - I would be killed outright, probably incinerated."

You would think there would be accounts of Ethiopians dying from spontaneous combustion, or something, if that were the case. My guess? The Ethiopian Orthodox Church doesn't have the Ark of the Convenant.

The book itself declares it is non-divinely inspired, but rather a potentially imperfect account of history. (2 Macc 15, 38-39)

This is 2 Macc 15:38-39:
The Good Book said:
38 If it is well written and to the point, that is what I wanted; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that is the best I could do. 39 Just as it is harmful to drink wine alone or water alone, whereas mixing wine with water makes a more pleasant drink that increases delight, so a skillfully composed story delights the ears of those who read the work. Let this, then, be the end.

I don't see anything about divine inspiration in there, do you?
