  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I suppose we could start a new thread, "The Errors and Inventions of Protestantism" or even "The Errors and Inventions of Orthodoxy." However, the OP is limited to the Catholic Church, so I will not derail this thread.

Some people promote a very attractive idea: All true Christians, regardless of how they live, have an absolute assurance of salvation, once they accept Jesus into their hearts as "their personal Lord and Savior."

Thank you for the excellent information. The only point I would disagree with is that of Rhode Island, which was found by John Brown, a Baptist, who escaped Puritan persecution in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded Rhode Island as a refuge not only for Baptist, but also for Quakers and Jews (the oldest Baptist Church and the oldest synagogue in America are both in Rhode Island). Thus, it is inaccurate to think that Rhode Island was Congregational.

By the way, do you know of any association between Rhode Island and the Island of Rhodes?

Wasn't Rhode Island founded by Roger Williams?

That was not my intent... to open one more thread in Protestanism..Simple... you all accuse of what the RC is doing ... while the Protestant church is doing the same... but instead of calling he keetle black it would be better even more preferable to see that yeah indeed we are all human and we err? No one said the EO is free from mistakes either so why bother doing the count down :sorry:

By the way, do you know of any association between Rhode Island and the Island of Rhodes?

From the Official Rhode Island website:

This state was named by Dutch explorer Adrian Block. He named it "Roodt Eylandt" meaning "red island" in reference to the red clay that lined the shore. The name was later anglicized when the region came under British rule.

Source: Shearer, Benjamin F. and Barbara S. State Names, Seals, Flags and Symbols Greenwood Press, Westport, Connecticut – 1994

The official name of Rhode Island is State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It was formed as the merger of two colonies though we now just refer to it by the island's name. Rhode Island the actual island is known locally as Aquidneck Island to avoid confusion. The source above suggests the name is a corruption of the Dutch Roodt Eylandt. However, there is a monument on the island which gives a different story:

To
Giovanni de Verrazzano
The navigator from Italy
Who in 1521 crossed the perilous northern ocean
First to
Behold the coast of the future United States
Cast anchor in this bay
Explore its islands
One of which because of its shape
He christened Rhodes
Name later extended to the entire state of
Rhode Island

Source: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/28/Verrazzano_monument.jpg

The other half of the state's name is "Providence Plantations", named by Roger Williams, who was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views. He named it "Providence" in thanks to God and the term "Plantations" just means "colony" in contrast to the slave plantations of the South and Caribbean.

The Quakers, beginning with William Penn, kept respectful relations with the Indians of this region (the "Walking Purchase" was a sad exception, though it postdated W. Penn and was not a Quaker action, though it was done iirc by a Quaker). The Moravians, and as far as I know, and the Anabaptist settlers of Pa., also maintained respectful relations.

In Voltaire's "Letters" on England he noted that Penn's colony signed no formal treaty with the Indians (being against their religion to 'swear' to something), however they did make oral agreements, and (and here you can sense Voltaire's lapping up the irony) they were the only group NOT to break their agreements with the Indians.

I failed to get the quote from the Qu'ran and am interested to know what you are driving at.

Thanks!
Here are a few of the verses. There are many more.

Qur'an 5:17"Verily they are disbelievers and infidels who say, 'The Messiah, son of Mary, is God.'"

Qur'an 5:51"Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends. They are but friends and protectors to each other."

Qur'an 9:29"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, who do not forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, or acknowledge the Religion of Truth (Islam), (even if they are) People of the Book (Christians and Jews), until they pay the Jizyah tribute tax in submission, feeling themselves subdued and brought low." [Another translation says:] "pay the tax in acknowledgment of our superiority and their state of subjection."

Qur'an 5:14"From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We made a covenant, but they forgot and abandoned a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, stirred up enmity and hatred among them to the Day of Doom. Soon will Allah show them the handiwork they have done."

Qur'an 5:47"Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. If any fail to judge by what Allah has revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel."

Qur'an 5:72"...Lo! Whoever joins other gods with Allah or says He has a partner, Allah has forbidden Paradise, and the Hell Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help."

A Christian apologist [who seems to be well versed in the Arabic and Quran] had a thread concerning that [amongst many other threads on the Quran]:)

http://www.christianforums.com/t6020764-84/#post38402483http://www.christianforums.com/t6020764/
Jesus is God says Koran...

*snip* OP:

Ittakhathoo ahbarahum waruhbanahum arbaban min dooni Allahi waalmaseeha ibna maryama wama omiroo illa liyaAAbudoo ilahan wahidan la ilaha illa huwa subhanahu AAamma yushrikoona

9.31 They have taken their learned persons and their monks (as) lords from superior (to) “allah” and The Messiah, Mary's Son; and they commanded not except that they may worship one god, no god except He, glory be to Him from what they associate partners.

Observe that “allah” is included along with The Messiah, Jesus Christ, via the copulative conjunction “wa”, as being part and parcel of the prepositional phrase initiating with “min” (from).

Wasn't Quran 5 written during a time of war?

Good point. For those of us who suffer from a "holier than thou" syndrome and somehow believe that our church is pure and without error, it is helpful to get a small dose of humility and realize that churches are, indeed, human institutions which are subject to human error. The Roman Church, unfortunately, does not hold this position.

Nowhere has the Catholic Church said that it does not make mistakes.
