• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Natural "remedies"?

I'm sure that some natural remedies can help for sure, but it obviously needs to be tried under care of a doctor so you get the best results.

I've finally found my natural remedy though :) It was quite by accident too... I knew that going on the contraceptive pill created severe anxiety for me, but I have gone gluten free over the past two months (had high gluten results and also a wide range of applicable symptoms - one of with was anxiety and stressfulness). Quite literally after about 4 days, I have no anxiety unless I have something with gluten.

So yup, I've tried one, and yeah it's worked but obviously isn't going to work for everyone (or even many). It is worth looking at the diet (in conjunction with doctor again) to see if changes could help though.

How did you know it was gluten related and how does that affect your diet?
I'm glad you got relief, and I agree you have to be under a doc's care for it to know what dose you need to take. My doc frowned on St John's wort because either it does not work or something.

Nobility, its great your natural remedy worked. I thought my panic attacks were food related but they aren't but I have heard from other people who's p.a's are food related. Im thinking more about natural remedies now but where does one start, there are so many?

There is no doubt that diet and exercise help, even if they don't eliminate mental health problems. The healthier I am physically, the better I do mentally. I do encourage people to do so under the care of a physician. If you don't want to go on medications, it is worth your efforts to look into alternate ways of dealing with any type of health issues. Be aware though, natural remedies don't usually work as quickly as medications. If you're looking for a quick fix, then you probably will need to go with man-made medications. I've heard some good, but mostly bad about St. Johns Wort. If you're coming off of a benzo medication, you may find that St. Johns Wort will make your withdrawals harder to deal with.

Jan, when I first developed my panic disorder (p.d) I came in contact with someone who had exactly what I have and their p.d was caused by eating a certain type of food. So naturally I thought this is whats causing my p.d too. However I have since found out that it isnt causing my p.d. Also I met two other people who's p.d was linked to food probs. There are chemicals in foods that cause all sorts of problems. A lot of people have food intolerances which cause all sorts of reactions in the body, mostly problems with the digestive system.

Our foods are pretty far from pure these days. I am fortunate enough to have a husband who is a wonderful gardener and I know how to can what he and I grow. We buy a side of beef each year from a local farmer who doesn't let his cows come into contact with a lot of chemicals and hormones. However, I know that I still ingest a lot of things that shouldn't be in the food from what I have to buy at the grocery stores.

Thats a neat set up you got re food. For me its a difficult balancing act re food. The panic disorder nearly started to cause me to start to panic about the foods Im eating, I even started to have problems with thinking I was going to choke on my food. This sounds funny but believe you me it is far from it. I lost 1 stone in a very short period and I then started to panic about my rapid weight loss. Thankfully my weight has stabilised now. It doesnt take much now for me to start to develop a panic attack. :(

Agree. I read your other thread you referred to in the general section. So sorry that you are going so through so much pain and suffering. You are walking through a very dark valley. I just feel in my own situation that most people dont really understand the struggle to get through each day. Ive reached the point where I dont care whether people understand it or not, Im just focusing on trying to cope with each day.

Take care!

I understand the trying to just cope with each day. One thing that I've been doing that seems silly, but it helps is to watch TV. Not just any TV, but clean comedies. I keep it clean, like old TV shows. I laugh. Whenever the laugh track plays, I laugh. I laugh no matter how stupid the joke or situation is. It really has helped me.

Unfortunately my husband and daughter and been home most of the last two weeks. I love them dearly, but they have different tastes in TV than I do. They like shows that are rather intense, such as NCIS and that is too intense for me. The only show that I like that they like is M*A*S*H. I haven't watched a comedy other than a few episodes of M*A*S*H since they have been home. My daughter goes back to school on Monday and my husband goes back to work on Tuesday. I plan on watching a bunch of clean, old comedies that day. At first I was forcing myself to laugh. Since I started doing that, I've found that I really do feel better.

Its not silly its very good. Laughter is a natural remedy, "A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones."

For me its actually difficult to laugh to much, this brings on my breathing difficulty :( But yes thats a very good way to help to get better :D

One of the reasons why my breathing is so difficult is because when I had a very severe panic attack because of my breathing I ended up in hospital. I suffered major trauma/shock from this experience and its taking me a long time to recover from it.

I have breathing problems when I'm having a panic attack too. I do the laughing to help with my depression. I can't say whether or not it helps with the panic problem or not. It does help my overall general well-being.

I find laughing to help A LOT when I'm stressed out. I'm blessed to have a boyfriend who tries to get things off my mind (usually by using his sense of humor) when I'm having anxiety issues.

I keep a few sites in mind, like ICanHazACheeseburger (cute kitty pictures) or FailBlog to help me laugh.

I find even doing mindless games online to help me just zone out and calm down--- hence my addiction to Farmville ;)

Scullcap is a very good nervine for anxiety. I have used it before with great results. In fact, it is also recommended for those who are coming of of benzos or having withdrawls.

It is pretty bitter so if you use it as a tea or tincture be ready for this. You can also purchase it in capsule form.

Best bet is if you want to go the natural route consult with a local naturopathic professional or someone who is really familiar with the field of natural treatments. They can assess you and direct you to the correct herbal rememdies to try.
