• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We don't spend a lot of time wondering about the world to come; we believe that
if we lead a good life and follow G-d's will via His commandments, the future will
take care of itself.

I think it would be beneficial for more Christians to adopt "the future will take care of itself" thinking, and think more of how they are submitting themselves before the Lord today and let the Lord worry about the future.

"Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
" Isa. 64:4 / paraphrased in 1 Cor. 2:9

Satan is only mentioned in Genesis IF you believe the serpent was Satan.

Not quite true. Satan is explicitly mentioned in Job, I Chron. 21:1 (tempting David), and Zechariah 3 (protesting the appointment of someone name Joshua to the position of High Priest).

Those are the only explicit references to Satan in the Hebrew Bible. Makes one wonder how he came to play so prominent a role.

I said Genesis specifically. Were I to be asked about references to Satan in the Hebrew Bible, I would have listed the references you have above. :)

Yeah, I misread "only mentioned in Genesis" as excluding the rest of the Hebrew Bible. In context of your response to the previous poster, I should have known better. (Moving the modifier "only" so that it modifies "if" would have helped.)

Sorry about that.

No worries!

It's because Jesus: He was tempted by him, and then speaks about seeing him "fall from heaven"...then of course there's 2Peter, Jude and Revelation (Revelation is where we get the whole serpent=satan thing)- all those guys got their info from Jesus.

Now are the gospels true? Is 2Peter and Jude theologically correct? Is Revelation an accurate vision? If so, then everything's fine. If not, then we have bones about the whole subject.

Since there is a thread on the Christian GT board concerning hell and some have brought the views of the early Jewish sages and rabbis, I thought I would bump this thread up to further discuss the topic of the "hell" in the Bible.

I remember someone asked a Rabbi in a website saying, if we will go to a cleaning process then we all end up in heaven why bother to follow the laws, the Rabbi said that process is more painful then you can imagine, and I also remember another rabbi saying Gehannom can be eternal.

that's the problem with Judaism, you don't get a clear answer.

Thank you for your input. The way looks on that other thread, there is no clear answer from Christians either.
Though Jesus did mention "gehenna" in the NT of the Christian Bible. Thoughts?

Scripture4All - Greek/Hebrew interlinear Bible software

Matthew 3:7 Being aware yet many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming upon the baptism of him he said to them "produce of vipers! who shows to ye to be fleeing from the being about/melloushV <3195> (5723) Wrath

Matt 23:33 "Serpents! produce of vipers! how? ye may be fleeing from the judging of the geennhV <1067> "
[Ezekiel 39:12/Reve 14:14]

Strong's Number G1067 matches the Greek γέεννα (geenna), which occurs 12 times in 12 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

Mentioned 11 times in Gospels, 1 time in James 3:6

The clear message of Judaism is that it is best to be the best person you can be in this life and not to worry about the afterlife. It just isn't that big of a deal in Judaism.

Well, it's similar to Islamic message about what to do in this life.

I don't doubt that. The answer the rabbi in your example gave about why to perform the Laws is not the one I have heard most often. Doing what God desires is done because God desires it and it brings us to a closer relationship with God. It is not because we fear punishment.
