  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do atheists come to CF

I came here at first, because I was a Christian.... I had a different account then. I came back, because I wanted to learn about different views of Christianity. I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian home, and I did not want my view of all Christianity being such, as I found it was, and I think this was unfair to other people on my behalf, since it was leading to stereotyping. In a sense, I felt I was becoming prejudiced against Christians, and I did not feel comfortable with that, so I came to learn more about the people, so I wouldn't view them as one big mass. (Hopefully I explained that properly).

.... and to ask questions and start discussion. (and maybe be a bit of a pest, I'll admit.)m:thumbsup:

I visit because I know that I do not have all the answers, and I am always eager to gain new insights. The world we live in is full of a mass of contradictory viewpoints. To have the opportunity to have a reasoned and balanced discussion is rare (and for this I lay blame on both some atheists and some Christians - who both prefer to attack rather than discuss), but is worth looking for in any place it may be found. Take care.

Hi. Earlier I started a thread on what are the "pet peeves" of athiests on CF, and realized a better question would be to ask is what are the main reasons atheists visit, not only CF, but any Christian forum.
So all atheists [and other non-Christians] just state the main reasons you come here. Thanks.

I am more Agnostic than Atheist but the reason I ahev come here is to get insight from Christians about Christianity and Christians. I am fully aware that there are Atheists out here that can not keep their mouths shut and their opinions to themselves. I am also aware that goes for some Christians as well. It is far from my intent to even attempt to be little your faith and beliefs that is not my place nor right to do so.
The answer for me atleast is because I am hoping to get real answers about my questions.

I joined just to make you mad! :p JOKING of course!

I joined to see what it was like over here. I'm a huge forum fan and am a member on various forums of all different topics. I figured why not join this forum and educate myself on Christianity, whether I believe in it or not.

Hi all,
Well I've joined because my partner and her brother have both mentioned your forum so I thought I'd take a look.
I was born into a Christian family (please note - being born into a Christian family does not make you a Christian child) and was indoctrinated at a very early age. I regularly attended church up until about 2 years ago (I am now 41).
I have had a varied and interesting past: a failed marriage (married a bit hastily!), I've been a smoker on and off (including smoking dope) and have enjoyed have a few drinks at the weekend. But I have not regretted any of these things - they are part of who I am today and I don't believe there is anything wrong with anything I have done.
My only regret is not having had the courage to be true to my beliefs at an earlier age.
As I have mentioned I have been a regular church attendee just about all my life, I know the bible and have listened to too many sermons to count, so I know what is required, belief-wise to be a Christian. The trouble is I don't believe it, any of it. There was a time when I thought I did, but now I realize I was just taken in by the forced emotion (what Christians call "feeling the spirit") and only kept going to church out of duty to (or a fear of upsetting) my family.
I consider my self an intelligent person and I really can only look at things in a logical and scientific way. Evolution is, in my mind, why we are hear; There is no plausible alternative. Religion, any religion, is just superstition. The bible, or any other religious scripture, is just a series of stories made up to explain our existence in an unenlightened time. These texts have been interpreted (badly) over may hundreds of years, and often interpreted in a way to suit the religious leaders of that time. It is not the word of God - it is the words of men written to explain what was then unexplainable.
So, now you know where I stand. I feel I have wasted many years in pertaining to believe in something I didn't. I'm not bitter about it, I'm just happy that I've seen the light and discovered that it is a big ball of burning gas and not some imaginary divine entity.
Please don't waste your time 'praying' for me because, as far as I'm concerned, your words will only be heard by yourself. I'll be happy to read and respond to any comments you have regarding what I have written above, as long as your comments are made in a level headed, unemotional and considered way.
Kind regards,
Martin

Greetings and welcome! Have you read thru the Bible? I always like to ask that first...

I'm fascinated by why some people feel the need to believe in a god, particularly as I don't have any family or friends who are religious or superstitious.

Also I have to admit that I enjoy reading (and sometimes taking part in), debates between people who choose not to 'believe' in evolution for religious reasons, and the rest of us! They're an easy target...sorry!

Thank you for your post. Christians are divided on the topic of Evolution and also the Trinity and being divided like that does make most of us easy targets.
Not sure if you are aware there is a board that atheists are allowed to debate evolution on.

Edit: not sure if non-Christians can debate there or not......

I joined because I was raised in a catholic environment, but as soon as I started thinking about things for myself I realised that I simply didn't believe the supernatural aspects of religion and saw no evidence for it. I quite liked aspects of religion - the impressive architecture, the theatricality, the commitment, the community spirit. I disliked other parts. Once I left school, it played no significant part in my life, and hasn't since. I still appreciate the spiritual side of life, in a meditative Eastern kind of way, but without any supernatural overtones.

I'm curious to see what it all looks like now, at a personal level, and to try and get some understanding of how and why so many people believe the supernatural stuff.

I've been a member of an athiest forum for several months now, mainly (lurking) reading, and I'm surprised at the amount of Christians and other faiths who regularly post there, it's presumably for the same reason that Athiests come to CF.

I just love knowledge and learning, esp when it comes to religion
