• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

It's possible that my music is melancholy - but maybe unlike you, music is not the only thing that helps me feel better.

I guess we're a bit different on that...it's like my inclination to listen to music is less when I'm feeling bad.

well, not really... but that being said, there are songs that I can't listen because of what it's associated with.

when it comes to music, when i get really down and depressed, the music I listen to tends to be really dark, but I always tend to make sure that it is Christian, whether it be metal or gospel

I don't have audio books but if I did, that's not a bad idea. I have trouble listening to people say words on an audio recording, and reading something else on the computer at the same time. Maybe that's why I haven't pursued audio books just yet.

There are times where I try to listen to melancholy music anyway because I think it will "strengthen" me or something - but I'm not sure that's wise. I sometimes think that if I can train myself to be able to handle sad music, I will be able to get a grip on things more easily. But I don't know...

Um... I think that's a pretty bad idea... I mean music can affect people greatly... I can become very low just by listening to sad songs... So maybe... don't? Unless you really like them

+ Hm... if you don't have audio books, how about for instance trying radio? But channels that have more talks & discussions, not actuallymusic all the time.

Or online there a lot of nonprophit free organizations that host radio or podcast shows which you can later download for free. If you have any interests or hobbies you could try looking for some with the topic you would like

Anyone finding it difficult to listen to any music when they are really down? I feel like any song I listen to is too "weighty" for my chest.

I try to listen to some, to keep me awake when I'm doing something boring. But it's not easy.

Sometimes it is difficult.

Um, actually I've been there a lot of times because I've had depression for years. For me, I virtually lost every single interest in everything, including music even though music has accompanied me for so long. But you know, there is a way to go from here... When things have lost all their meaning, we can go to God who gave us our very meaning to exist. :) I eventually found my way there and realized why my soul could not be satisfied even by music then...

I think I know what you mean! It's a hard feeling to describe. Last week I was sitting in church, and a girl was singing a solo. I can't remember the song, but I felt this pressure in my chest and started crying. Music has always been very powerful to me. I don't know why. I always thought that part of my personality was being a deep feeler. And sometimes the words in music really hits me where it hurts...especially if I am going through a hard time. For me, I think some of it has to do with feeling alone. When I hear certain songs that I can identify with, I know that someone else out there has felt how I've felt...then I don't feel so alone. I guess that's why I still listen to it when i feel depressed. I listed to christian music every day when I was separated from my husband, even though I would cry my eyes out every time.

Not that this was a good thing to do. But I feel your pain...it is tough to find something else to do.

God-is-beautiful the part where you felt the pressure in your chest really resonates with me. That is exactly how it feels sometimes (or most of the time anyway) when I put any music on these days. Some music however is worse to the chest than others, but the chest seems to be the prime target of the sound of music. It's painful.

I totally agree with you...it is painful. Sometimes I feel like I've gotten the wind knocked out of me, like I can't breath. It used to happen to me quite often too...especially when I was alone. After things started calming down in my life, it seemed to happened less often.
