  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There has been interminable discussion on the number of the elect, and who will be saved or damned, and who goes straight to heaven, and who has to undergo purgation.

I personally subscribe to the position that only few are saved, because our Lord said "straight is the way and narrow the gate that leads to life, and few there be that enter therein." However, I also believe that among the baptised, a good portion of them eventually go to heaven. I trust in the universal salvific will of God and I hope that more are saved than I could know.

However, I wouldn't get in a fistfight with anyone over it because as Caedmon says, all the rest is nasty remarks and hard feelings.

I would think that most people go to Hell, the next greatest number go to Purgatory, and only a few go to Heaven. That's what I would think.

I agree, specially because of that remark Our Lord made ubout the eye of the needle and the rich man.

My thoughts are exactly the opposite of yours.

From everything I have heard of near death experiences, it would seem to me that when the near dead are faced with the light (the beauty of God's goodness) they would not only see themselves with utmost clarity but would feel repentance for the wrongs they had done. And they are only near death at that point....

What about what the Bible says?

Matthew 7:13 RSV "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
Matthew 7:14 RSV For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Did not Our Lady of Fatima say that most people go to Hell?

Would Our Lady contradict herself?

How does that Catholic prayer go?

Save us from the fires of hell,
Lead all souls to heaven,
Especially those who are in most need of thy mercy.

I think that there are an awful lot of St. Dismases in this world (Dismas, the good thief.) I have seen them in my own life--people who have had lots of issues (you might call them sins) to deal with, and who knew they had to find closure before they died, and who stubbornly clung
to life until they had worked them out (these often involved forgiving themselves and others.) Then, when they reached that feeling of clarity, they were ready.

They found the narrow way.

In the July apparition at Fatima, here is what Lucia says happened (Our Lady's words are in bold):

Make sacrifices for sinners, and say often, especially while making a sacrifice: O Jesus, this is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for offences committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
As Our lady spoke these words she opened her hands once more, as had during the two previous months. The rays of light seemed to penetrate the earth, and we saw as it were a sea of fire. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now following back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilibrium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. (it must have been this sight which caused me to cry out, as people say they heard me do). The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying nad repellant likeness to frightful and unknown animals, black and transparent like burning coals. terrified and as if to plead for succor, we looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly:
You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. It is to save them that God wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved, and there will be peace. This war will end, but if men do not refrain from offending God, another and more terrible war will begin during the pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night that is lit by a strange and unknown light [this occurred on January 28, 1938], you will know it is the sign God gives you that He is about to punish the world with war and with hunger, and by the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father.
To prevent this, I shall come to the world to ask that Russia be consecrated to my Immaculate Heart, and I shall ask that on the First Saturday of every month Communions of reparation be made in atonement for the sins-of the world. If my wishes are fulfilled, Russia will be converted and there will be peace; if not, then Russia will spread her errors throughout the world, bringing new wars and persecution of the Church; the good will be martyred and the Holy Father will have much to suffer; certain nations will be annihilated. But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and the world will enjoy a period of peace. In Portugal the faith will always be preserved... [Here belongs the part of the Secret of which Cardinal Sodano spoke at the Mass of Beatification, and which the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith will publish, with commentary.] Remember, you must not tell this to anyone except Francisco.
When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.
"Is there anything more that you want of me?"
No, I do not want anything more of you today.
Then as before Our Lady began to ascend towards the east, until she finally disappeared in the immense darkness of the firmament.

And then in August:

The moment Jacinta arrived the Lady appeared.
"What do you want of me?"
Come again to the Cova da Iria on the thirteenth of next month, my child, and continue to say the Rosary every day. In the last month I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.
"What are we to do with the offerings of money that people leave at the Cova da Iria?"
app_bvm1.jpg
I want you to have two ardors [litters to carry statues] made, for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. I want you and Jacinta to carry one of them with two other girls. You will both dress in white. And then I want Francisco, with three boys helping him, to carry the other one. The boys, too, will be dressed in white. What is left over will help towards the construction of a chapel that is to be built here.

Lucia then asked for the cure of some sick people.
Some I will cure during the year."
(looking sadly at them) Pray, pray very much. Make sacrifices for sinners. Many souls go to hell, because no one is willing to help them with sacrifice.
Having said that she departed as she had on the other occasions.

Hope that helps :)

Can make it a bit hard not to know your basic beliefs. BUT, all is good. Just wishing you well and good things. :)

God bless.

I heard this once years ago at Mass, and it has stuck with me ever since.

There was a priest and a man talking one day about Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. The man said to the priest "Fr., I pray I make it to purgatory." The priest said to him, "My Son, you need to pray for heaven." Then man replied, "Oh no Father, I know I will never go straight to heaven, so thats why I shoot for purgatory." Then the priest said to him, "Well, what if you miss?"

Made me really stop and think. Ya know.

Exactly.

And since she previously said (at Fatima in 1917) that most peeps go to hell, she's contradicting herself, if she said at Medjujorje that most peeps go to purgatory.

She'd also be contradicting her Son, who said something about camels and eyes of needles in relation to heaven...
