  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does the sun revolve around the earth?

If one were to understand the Bible literally, it would be hard to suggest that the earth revolves around the sun. The church fathers believed that the Bible teaches a geocentric universe. Modern astronomy has shown such an interpretation of
the Bible to be incorrect. Most Christians, therefore, have accepted that the earth revolves around the sun, in order to
avoid the idea that God is deceptive in His Creation. It would be good if we approached all scientific discovery the same way.

Joshua 10:13
And the Sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people
had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is this not written
in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of
heaven, and hastened not to go down about a whole day.

1 Chronicles 16:30: “He has fixed the earth firm,
immovable.”

Psalm 93:1: “Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm
...”

Psalm 96:10: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable
...”

Psalm 104:5: “Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so
that it never can be shaken.”

Isaiah 45:18: “...who made the earth and fashioned it, and
himself fixed it fast...”

Ecclesiastes 1:5: The sun also ariseth, and the sun
goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. Psalm 104:19 “Thou hast made the moon to mark the seasons;
the sun knows its time for setting.”

1 Esdras 4:34 – “The earth is vast, and heaven is high,
and the sun is swift in its course, for it makes the circuit
of the heavens and returns to its place in one day.”

Here, in my opinion, a window was opened on the eternal state. The evidence for that, to me, is that it was not recorded in other countries.
1 Chronicles 16:30: “He has fixed the earth firm,
immovable.”

Psalm 93:1: “Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm
...”

Psalm 96:10: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable

Psalm 104:5: “Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so

We are here forever. Yes. Don't take that to mean, that because we last forever, we can't have movement, we just won't, as the old phrase goes, be moved out of existence.
Isaiah 45:18: “...who made the earth and fashioned it, and
himself fixed it fast...”

Ecclesiastes 1:5: The sun also ariseth, and the sun
goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. Psalm 104:19 “Thou hast made the moon to mark the seasons;

The sun does rise. Don't think that God thought that it ran around the sky.
1 Esdras 4:34 – “The earth is vast, and heaven is high,
and the sun is swift in its course, for it makes the circuit
of the heavens and returns to its place in one day.”

[/quote] Right. It is all set in an organized motion. All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the solar system, and universe revolves around New Jerusalem one day. And that is coming to earth.

Isn't taking a lack of evidence for your story, and making it into positive evidence for your story a symptom of paranoid delusion?

ex: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you! :p

Let's do a little exercise --- I'll give you some of the verse just before verse 13, and you complete the verse as you think Joshua should have written it --- okay?

Here we go ---

Joshua 10:12 said:
Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, [...]

--- complete the verse in your own words, please.

The church fathers believed that the Bible teaches a geocentric universe.

How about the [non-church] science fathers --- what did they believe?

Modern astronomy has shown such an interpretation of
the Bible to be incorrect.

As it should.

Most Christians, therefore, have accepted that the earth revolves around the sun, in order to
avoid the idea that God is deceptive in His Creation.

Either that, or you are the one assigning only one interpretation to that passage --- and a wrong one at that.

In any event, please complete verse 12. I'm very curious to see how you think Joshua should have written it.

Alrighty, i'll play. The passages before and after the contested verse are as follows:

12Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

Sounds to me like god stopped the sun so that Israel could butcher up some more ammorites. Not sure what you mean by 'non-church science fathers'

Yup. I'm wondering what the 'right interpretation' is.

It's okay as it stands --- but I'm waiting for a "scientist" to tell me how they think Joshua (or anyone) should have completed verse 12.

"Should have" according to what criteria? I mean I could write anythign I want in there and say that's how it "should" have been... but I suspect that's not what you're after. Some more guidleines on what you're looking for would help.

I'm not saying what happened is right, but if I was living in that era and saw what appeared to be the sun not moving, I'd say that the sun halted. The OP's point is that a literal view in this case leads to something that runs contrary to reality, and that therefore a figurative interpretation is needed.

Unfortunately not and our own Richard T takes them quite seriously. Nearly every board I have posted on over the years has had its resident geocentrist and he is ours. I assume he will be around to defend geocentrism before the universe whizzes around the earth too many more times. The Biblical Astronomer Gerardus Bouw is his main hero.
