  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I didn't say it made it modest. I really don't like the one she bought. Apparently she isn't the only kid wearing them since they have sold out twice this year already.

The few stores she likes clothes at don't carry 1 pieces.

Just b/c other children are wearing them doesn't make them modest (or appropriate) either. I don't see much difference between the first picture and the other 2 pictured.

I bet her whole world would come crashing to a hault if she had to shop at JCPenney, or Sears to find a one-piece (not that I agree with them in public either).

Don't let her shop at those stores if they don't offer what you feel is appropriate for her to wear.

She's 10. If you don't want her to wear the swimsuit, then simply don't allow her to buy it. It really doesn't matter what all of the other kids are doing.

Actually until this year she had no problem shopping at Pennys or Sears. This year she has learned more about name brands because of the kids at school.

Even Walmart doesn't carry but a couple one piece suits. It is very hard to find them.

Two of the stores we shop at didn't sell anything but bikinis. The first pic is a suit from Abercombie and that is all they sell. The second two came from LTD Too and I don't recall seeing a 1 piece there.

I think a two piece is fine to wear, I just really am not sure about the one from Abercombie though. I don't like it. She bought it with money she worked for though.

Limited Too has quite a few one piece AND Tankini's. I just spent 5 minutes looking and found quite a few...

Well, my older daughter is only almost eight, so I'm not sure if she qualifies as a "tween" but she certainly has the attitude, lol. As far as bathing suits go, I'll let her wear a bikini as long as the bottoms cover her entire butt, and the top isn't overly small, such as teeny tiny triangles or the like. I can't really tell her not to wear a bikini since I wear once myself, and it makes going to use the bathroom much easier than a one piece would allow for. My five year old pretty much wants to do what my seven year old does, so she wears the same bathing suits as her sister. They do each have a one piece as well, so if they choose they can wear that as well.

I know LTD too didn't have a lot of that in the store. We have been there about 5 times in the last week .

Those suits sure aren't made for heavy kids with all those prints.

The ones at sears were very nice. We may have to go check those out.

I know she worries about tan lines so she has always tried to buy her suits close enough to the same that they aren't that different when she is out in a different one.

I know that's what I base my parenting decisions on.... (couldn't resist sarcasm ;) )

You know I am not even against two piece suits.... I wear one  and think some of them are no less modest than a one piece, the only difference is that you can see the belly but I don't see the belly as a big deal. However, when its all strings and clearly about accentuating the breasts on a 10 year old it adds up to a lot of bad things. I think she'd do better with a tankini whether they are "cool" or not. Isn't it more important to pass on values like respecting herself and her body, not making her choices based on her peers, etc?

There's another issue at work here too.... materialism! She's 10 and has 3 swimsuits. What an incredible waste. She should have one swimsuit and a savings account.

Actually she has more like 8 - 10. She spends every day at the pool in the summer. So she always gets her moneys worth out of them.

I don't understand how three swimsuits are an incredible watse, we do live in South Louisiana where you can almost swim year round.

This doesn't bother me. I will be the first one to say we keep up with the "Jones'" or in our case the Lavalleys.

IMO school and life is hard enough so if you can keep them from being picked on about something like they way they dress, I am going to do it.

A few thoughts:
1. If she's a trend-setter, why couldn't she set a trend for more modest swimwear?
2. If she's the trend-setter, why would she be made fun of? Everyone seems to automatically follow her, right?
3. Here are a few other thoughts for swimwear:
http://www.swimmodest.com/
http://www.modest-swimwear.net/
http://www.swimmodest.com/about.lasso
http://www.ohanaswimwear.com/
She could start a trend for "sarong swimsuits" or for "Hawaiian" ones (the last seems to be from an Hawaiian company?) . . . be modest, and have stuff to swim in that wouldn't advertise the sexuality of her 10-year-old body.

have you looked into the tankini's laurie? they are 2 pieces (easier for bathrooom like you say) but the top covers up more than the bikini tops.
i dont have a tween daughter yet, but my daughter (at any age) will wear a one piece or a tankini, no bikinis, too much flesh showing imo.

Would she wear something like this? a Tankini with a little skirt too?

javascript:DynObject.all.DynObject15.ZoomSpot();
She did wear things like this when she was younger. Now, she is too worried about tan lines. I don't know where she gets this from because you wouldn't catch me dead in a swimsuit without something over it.
