Romans 16 :17Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.


We are told by God to mark them which causes trouble and stay away from them.

Who do you know that does this. (no names).

The bible says that we need to recognize them for who they truly are(mark them) and stay away from them(avoid them).

For your own sanity. For your own relationship with God.

I encourage you to follow what God says.

Mark them and avoided them.

But by all means pray for them.

Shouldnt it be the Holy Spirits job to guide others to this kind of scripture ?? From my experience the Holy Spirit does a wonderful job at guiding us to needed scripture and in allowing the Holy Spirit to do so we dont end up fulfilling the very thing we are warning others of. Brother rod

The reason they don't is fear - fear of offending people, fear of losing membership, among other fears..... especially in this world of humanism and tolerance invading the church so insidiously.:o

This is an interesting topic to me. I've been reading some of these verses especially in Paul's writtings.

Paul quite often says to be in unity and to stay away from those causing division. Here are some of my observations so far.

Paul very seldom says to those in conflict this is what each of you should be saying. He just askes them to be of the same mind.

When Paul takes in the most details about disputes its what he refers to the strong brother weak brother. Paul doesn't say either is wrong or right. But he says each should not let the other speak negatively of the others position. That they respect each other and not undermind the others faith, thus they don't offend each other leading the other to forsake Christ.

While this is a simplification I don't see Paul saying speaking with one mind isn't having a script and wr all sign on and all repeat that script over and over. But that even tho we say things differently we don't speak negatively of the brothern just because they have different opinions.

I'm sorry ... I do not mean to be divisive ... I don't know what else might be going on here ... nor do I want to know (lol) ... but this verse really spoke to me this morn.

It came as comfort and direction to me ... I'd been dealing with a troublesome issue all nite long.

Sometimes, maybe there is 'more to the story' behind a post ... I do understand how those things go, too ... but not always is it so ...

And I think sometimes folks here would be totally a-m-a-z-e-d to learn how God has used something they have posted to impact the life of another reader here ... to help another along their journey ...

This is the Spirit-filled forum, yes?
Lots of divisiveness sometimes ... not the Spirit in control quite so much in those times ...
but He IS here, too.

And He used this verse to minister to me this morn.

so do I think we ought to remember to 'unmark them' ... when they no longer need 'marked'.

Least, that is my thought ... as I know God is still in the business of changing hearts ...

Well it didnt take long for me to get reported that time A thread that says MARK THEM is what should be reported. I would much rather be guilty of standing for those being judged by others than be guilty of Marking people who may be in disagreement with me.

About a year and a half ago I was in intense warfare prayer for God's will to go forth for His kingdom. I wasn't praying about any specific person but the state of the church and God lead me to pray for Him to mark them that would come against His will with attempts of deceiving us. I had never heard of or read this scripture until after I finished praying.

See at the time I was on the phone with my mentor and I was instructed to pray for God's will for the church. God was building my confidence in knowing that I was hearing God while I pray. So when I finished my mentor had me turn to this scripture. I was in awe of God.

So for me this scripture is not speaking of causing division among people but marks the spirits that are NOT of God operating in people so that we can clearly see IN THE SPIRIT. When we can identify the enemy operating in the spirit through individuals, we should at that point be listening for God's specific instructions on what He desires us to do. Sometimes He'll have us pray, confront the spirit, be silent, etc but as long as we are in obedience to Him and the ungodly spirit is marked we'll see the enemy coming from a distance we can also see the anointing of God come to break the yokes of bondage.

Wonderful scripture Renee..Have been looking at it often for some time now..One thing that I would like to add is that while we may only see "division" as those who "stir the pot" of trouble among us, it also has to do with those who try divide others by teachings, heresies, and constantly slandering of others among their peers..The latter is far worse than imagined, for it creates a certain amount of exclusiveness in the mindset of the hearers..
