  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone seen....

Oh, more books! Thanks SO much, I love parenting books! I'll look into it. I still have the book The Strong Willed Child...but I haven't read it. :sigh: I should.

Thanks all of you...I'm so glad that a couple of you at least have experienced this. :sigh:

Thanks for the links, too Texas. :) I am going to read them right now. We did better today. Just fits, no head banging. Poor baby, though. He is ALWAYS tired. He sleeps all night long and naps pretty well for the most part but he's constantly fussy and rubbing his little eyeballs! :swoon:
Ah, you're looking for books!

"The Discipline Book" By Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears is VERY good http://www.amazon.com/Discipline-Bo...d_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205159739&sr=8-1
and I believe it addresses this very thing.
I've heard of lots of kids "head butting before.
It's not that he's being "bad", he he just doesn't know how to properly channel his frustration yet.
How are his language skills?

Awful really. He had jtubes put in his ears when he was 11 months old and he basically ceased all verbal communication. :sigh:

Thanks everyone, that gives me more to walk away and think on. You ladies are awesome.

After his tubes were put in, did they check out his hearing? DS had a hearing test 30 and 60 days post tubes since some kid's can have damaged hearing. He could also be hearing things normally for the first time. My DS doesn't really say words, like 2-3 but his doctor said until the tubes at 14 months - he heard like he was underwater.

He had hearing los from the fluid buildup but dr. said he was fine once they got all the fluid out. Believe it or not, he made more words PRE tubes than he does now, post tube. Really odd. He was saying momma and daddy and bye bye and all that pre-tubes....just not now.

I just talked to his pedi and she wants him to see a child psychologist...stat especially since he is bruising himself. :sigh: So now I have to find someone for him in NC. She had recommendations for here, but not for NC.

jessesgirl,
i would seriously call Early Intervention for an assesment for your son. If his speech is delayed they will send a speech therapist to the house weekly. They will also assess if he is behind in other areas. BTW..how old is your son? how many words was he saying before the tubes were put in? Does he talk AT ALL now?

He is 14 months old. He is way ahead in everything but talking. "Sometimes" he puts a word together here and there, but not consistently. He typically just points and grunts. He said 3 or four words before the tubes, but now he doesn't say those words...he is just now starting to try to make words again and it has been five months since he got his tubes put in.

When do you go back to NC? If you're going to be in Tx for a while I'd just see someone now and wait until you move back to worry about it. Things might be different by then.
Moving is a big deal to kids. I'm going to bet that a child psychologist is going to come to the conculsion that it's an adjustment issue related to the move and daddy being gone.

When Nate was 15 months, his peditrician was doing his check up. He was ahead in all the physical areas but she said he was behind in speech.... thought he should have 6-10 words. SHE FREAKED ME OUT. I felt like a bad mom and worried that something was wrong with my son. Luckily, I had some really supportive women at work - most who have kids/grandkids who encouraged me to see another peditrician. The New (2nd) doctor stated that little boys are often behind in speech at this age and will "Catch-up" by their 2nd birthday. Nate sure did - we can't get him to be quiet anymore...(lesson learned- be careful what you wish for)

As far as the grunting or pointing - We had to "encourage" Nate to try to talk and not give in when he grunted or pointed to things. He had to "Try" to say the word like "milk" or "cup" or "food" and we didn't give it to him until he made some attempt at the word. For a long time "milk" was "illk". Other people had a hard time knowing what he wanted but dh and I knew his words. He did grow out of it like I said but he was close to 2 years old. Hang in there.

Haha. *runs and hides, then peeks back in thread and adds a final word* That family is a little...uh, extreme. :sorry: Though I've read Created to be His Helpmeet and I recommend it for all (but you will throw it against the wall a couple times before you read all the way through, lol).

Please don't. My nephew has language development issues and this method made it much much worse for him, not better.
It also got him in the habit of hitting his mom or his brother every time he was displeased with them. He has so many issues because of this, I would encourage you to stay far far away.
I would not recommends this to any parent, but especially to a parent who's child seems to be struggling with language skills. I have seen first hand the damage it can do.

I bought The Discipline Book recently (well, ordered and paid for) and got a message that I can go pick it up from the bookstore. I'll try to do that today and see if I can type out a quote for you in the next day or so, maybe that will help!

Well.....since we are talking about books here, I am in the process of waiting to pick up a new book that I hope will help my intense little warrior, er, I mean child...hehe

It is called Bach Flower Remedies for Children and it is supposed to be a natural method of using flower essences (much like aromatherapy) in calming a child, helping him/her to find a balance and being more grounded. I'll let you know how it goes!
