  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

the reason the Republicans are so scared of Obama, and are trying to insult and smear him with anything that might possibly stick or tarnish him, is because of things like this:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/08/dem-wins-election-to-fil_n_90581.html
Democrat Bill Foster has snatched former House Speaker Dennis
Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election that gave the longtime Republican district to the Democrats. Foster has won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis with 556 of 568 precincts reporting.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama made a TV ad praising Foster; Oberweis had fundraising help from the apparent Republican nominee, John McCain, and Hastert's backing. The winner Saturday will fill the remainder of Hastert's term, which ends in January. The 66-year-old Hastert, who lost his powerful post as speaker when Democrats took control of Congress, resigned late last year.

it's those coattails, baby. A dem hasn't held this seat in decades.

Obama mania is dying. I have to admit though. His supporters are the most loyal and dedicated people in regards to supporting and coming to his defense. America just doesn't see what you all see. We see an empty suit with questionable relationships with a radical church, rezko, and an objectionable voting record (gun control support, infanticide support, pork barrel support, and entitlement support).

Hey did you know Obama won another state today?

It's tragically hillarious to see bush supporters charge obama supporters as being cult victims and the most loyal supporters. Lie about wmd and kill or wound over a hundred thousand Americans; honest mistake. Accusing a politician of being Muslim as a reason not to vote for him: Priceless!

For those against obama, what is the single strongest argument against him? Hint: please dont post op/ed pieces that speculate on the possibilities of what could happen based on positing theories from extrapolations concerning whom obama may have sat next to in a restaurant that was located in a city Farakhan had visited.

Hey did you know Obama won another state today?

and that he won it 60-40? And that he'll win another on Tuesday?

And that he won two out of four on March 4? And that his pledged delegate lead is growing and growing?

And that his long electoral coattails helped a Democrat take Denny Hastert's seat in IL-14, the first time a Dem has held that seat since the 70s- which also means another Superdelegate for Obama?

I wouldn't say that I've ever been against Obama so maybe I shouldn't be responding to your post and my particular concerns lay with Hillary too. As I've mentioned in the past I worry about spending but I guess that's neither here nor there because we can't know what either will do until s/he's in office. I also realize (now) that proposals are ideals and shouldn't necessarily be taken at face value but rather be used as a guage (sp?) of their priorities and that's fine with me.

Eh, and as usual the debates don't help me much. Last week when they were discussing NAFTA I found the way the questions were phrased to be annoying. As if either would opt out of NAFTA due to parties refusing to renegotiate. I found that dialog to be such a waste of time, especially when referring to Canada.

Obama is not a stupid man and a lot of the arguments I see against him would need this as a requirment for them to be sound. And a lot of the arguments I see against Hillary have similar ridiculous requirments but in her case it must be assumed that she's evil.

Not evil so much as maybe being mental. I agree with Larry David:

I don't ever want Hillary anywhere near a phone with a red button on it, at 3 AM or any other time of day. Ditto J. Sydney McCain. I want someone who appears cool, calm, and collected to answer the phone, and who has demonstated good judgment in his past - like, say, Barack Obama.

Actually it wasn't convincing to me either. I was already convinced. His article just put into words what I was already thinking.

To me Hillary exhibits traits of narcissistic personality disorder. She seems to think her election to president is SO important that basically anything whatsoever goes.

In contrast, I don't see Obama as that kind of person. I see him as having a more normal type of ego.

Of course, I am only going on male intuition here. ;)

The fact that he claims that Bush has over-extended our military, but yet, he advocates invading Pakistan.

And he wants a ban on the "production of fissile material."

And he runs away and gets inarticulate when journalists ask him tough questions, and apparently catch him in a lie.

Well, I don't have a phd in psychology so I try to keep the arm-chair diagnosing to more qualified people. Also, I think I missing an emotional component that lends to the formation of such opinions. As far as intuition goes, I don't rely on it.

From the first website listed:

"If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Nothing here about being determined to "invade Pakistan" no matter what- which is the falsehood that you insinuated.

As for the quotes on the Obama's wesite, which ones do you think are wrong-headed or hypocritical or what not? As far as I see, they are all sensible observations.

Here's the quote from his speech:

I found it here.
