I thought I would post this here to have parents weigh in on this.I saw this episode last week and apparently the father refuses to work because he believes that God will provide for his family when they are 8 months behind on their payments, have no running water, gas, or electricity, and are being evicted from their home. The husband thinks that his product he invented ( a spray that people can spray on their license plates to avoid being detected when they run a red light) will take off and has only sold two cans, not to mention the thought of that is just dangerous. Is there a fine line of relying on God and being a parent and taking responsibility to provide for your children.

I sent out three resumés and called 10 pet shops, but didn’t get a response. Most recently, I’ve come across a red light photo blocker. You can spray it onto your license plate, and if you accidentally went through a red light, it would overexpose the film, and they can’t send you a ticket. I thought I was led by the Lord to do this business, but so far I’ve only sold two cans.”

I've known a few people like this: always switching jobs, always looking for the next big thing, starting one wonder business after another. But this is the first time I've sen someone try to justify their actions with the bible.

He seriously needs to grow up.

And I agree with Dr Phil's point about God leading him to sell a product so people can break the law. Hmmmmmm, there's definitely something screwy here.

He thinks the Lord led him to start a business like that?? ummm..if he read the bible he would know it isn't the Lord's leading to go against the Lord's commandments. strange fellow.

God is most definately NOT an excuse not to provide for your family, infact God's word tells us that if anything he wants man to provide for their family:

1 Tim 5:8; If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Further, God tells us that we should work:

Ephesians 4:28; He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

2 Thess 3:10-11; While we were with you, we used to tell you "Whoever refuses to work is not allowed to eat".
We say this because we hear that there are some people among you who live lazy lives and who do nothing except meddle in other people's affairs. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we command these people and warn them to lead orderly lives and work to earn their own living.

Proverbs 14:23; All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

Finally, you can't just wait for God to provide for your family, yes God will provide BUT he needs to work through you, its the whole faith without deeds deal:

James 2: 20-22, 26; You fool! Do you want to be shown that faith without actions is useless? How was our ancestor Abraham put right with God? It was through his actions, when he offered his son Issac on the alter. Can't you see? His faith and his actions worked together, his faith was made perfect through his actions........As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

*In saying all of the above, I know how disheartening it can be when you can't find work OR you just don't know where you are going....I guess in these times we can only pray continuously, follow/seek God and keep knocking on door (ie- applying for jobs) and allow God to open those doors for us.

Those were my first thoughts too. I mean sure there are times when it is very Christlike to take a stand but avoiding a ticket when you choose to break the law isn't the time.

That was my thought. He thinks God is going to bless a business that helps people break the law? WOW...

It reminds me of the joke about the old man caught in the flood.

The forecast was for enough rain to cause massive flooding, and sure enough, as the rain came down, the water began to rise. Soon the police began going door to door evacuating people. They found an old man at home, and urged him to get into the police car. He refused saying, "God will take care of me." They tried and tried to convince the man to leave, but he refused so they gave up and moved on.

The water kept rising, and the old man moved up to the roof of his house. Soon a man in rowboat came by and said, "Get in old man." The old man shook his head no and said, "God will take care of me."

As the water continued to rise the man climbed up on the chimney of his house, and a helicopter flew over, with a rope dangling, and over a megaphone shouted, "Grab the rope and we'll save you!" The old man waved them away going, "God will protect me!"

The old man drowned, and when he reached heaven he asked to speak to God, and was granted permission. When he arrived he said, "I don't understand God! I trusted you to protect me and you ignored my need."

And God said, "What are you talking about? I sent you a police officer, a rowboat and a helicopter!"

I totally agree with you Lee-Lee, If your continually doing your best with the opportunities that are available in finding suitable employment, then that is all you can do in your own strength and that is putting your faith on the line and trusting God to do the rest by putting his Word to the test, He can make it all possible when it seems impossible to us....
