I have heard that in the Russian Orthodox wedding ceremony, icons are used. What are they used for and what is the purpose? They do not do this in Greek tradition. Also do you know of any other differences between Greek and Russian traditions?

Icons are used? Of course, but in what way are you thinking that they are used during the marriage ceremony?

They're many traditional differences between the Greeks and the Russian. But are you asking in particularly the differences in the wedding service?

My son recently had a BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING.

I gave them the wedding icons and an icon of St. Anna as the bride's mom is Anna.

Father blessed the Icons at the Engagement Ceremony and they were carried up in the wedding procession along with the rings by the children.

My OCA parish has a lot of old Russian traditions but I have never seen icons as a part of the service.

However, I have seen that people give the new husband and wife icons as gifts for their homes. The icons are put on the altar before DL Sunday morning and given to them after the wedding Sunday afternoon.

But I have not seen them carried during the service.

I attended my first (and only so far) Orthodox wedding a few months ago. It was Russian (OCA - St. Seraphim of Sarov, Dallas, TX), and the icons of Christ and the Theotokos were part of the ceremony, but I don't remember their function. I videotaped the ceremony, so if I rewatch it I can probably hear/see what the priest (Fr. Joseph Fester) said about the icons.

This is kind of a bit frivolous - but is it possible to use the circlets in an OCA wedding? I always liked those more than the actual crowns. Like I said...frivolous - but nonetheless, I'm curious :)

I think it depends on the priest. I think I heard that my friends requested the wreaths, but the Archbishop said they would use the crowns.

I can understand why people like the wreaths. After all, if someone holds a crown over your head, you better duck before the stick of Imperial Margarine comes flying at you: http://www.tvparty.com/g2c/imperial.ram

Do you mean wreaths, A4C? (I've never heard them called circlets, though of course that doesn't mean anything.)

We go to an Antiochian parish, and made our own. It was awesome. :) They're hanging above our bed on a little shelf now.

I'm the one who started calling them circlets - cause I didn't know they were called wreaths. :sorry: But yeah, I'm sure that's what she's talking about.

Mary
Stephanos? The little off-white round little rice-looking thingies that go around in a circle and have a silk ribbon attached to both stephanos (for bride and groom)??

We used circlets in ours. The church had the crowns, but our priest said he actually preferred the circlets because no one had to hold them up the entire time. We were glad, because we wanted something we could keep and hand down to the kids.

Hmm..I have never seen this at a Greek wedding. Interesting. And I have been in and to some very BIG FAT Greek weddings, lol.

They're merely an Icon gift given to the newly wed family for their new home.

Who gives the gift? Because according to the Priest, we need them for the wedding..

They are not used in the ceremony. The only difference I know of is the type of "crowns" used. Russian tradition uses actual crowns instead of the pretty circlets (or whatever the name is).

Mary

Greek uses "stefana" which is just the Greek word for crowns.

I attended my first (and only so far) Orthodox wedding a few months ago. It was Russian (OCA - St. Seraphim of Sarov, Dallas, TX), and the icons of Christ and the Theotokos were part of the ceremony, but I don't remember their function. Please look for me..

In the Russian tradition, the Chalice is kissed after receiving Holy Communion.

Love,
Christina

I assume you mean for the DL?

Depends on the Priest.

Far, far away... I went to St Petersburg to the Sofrino store.
They were about 1/7th of what they are online in the US and we didn't have time to get them commissioned in the US as we planned in 4 months.
