What do you believe is the purpose of these uninhabitable planets? If Earth is the only planet we know capable of supporting life in our solar system, why isn't there only 1 planet orbiting the sun? Why would god create these ginourmous planets?

There are many purposes unknown to men....But you are asking quit a modern question...Historically, the planets have been apart of many pagan religions. For instance, the Greeks believed that a person had to ascend through 7 Stars (Moon, Sun, and the five visible planets) to get to heaven at the edge of the universe. They also noticed that certain groupings of stars made a pattern through the year. They saw that the sun rose and set through a particle group. They made religious festival to celebrate those days. So then, their cosmos was central to their system of salvation. God set up His cosmos central to their religion then crushed their pagan system. God shifted Earth so that it went through a different group and the Greeks had a crisis of faith…which made way for new system to replace it which was Christianity. God also set up Cult of Caesar, Mithras, and others to still retain their shattered religion, but it firmly made place for God to rip open the heavens and make the mechanism of salvation focus around Jesus.
Now, this is one reason…how about another? To humble us.

Psalm 8:
1LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
5You have made thema little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned themwith glory and honor. 6You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
9LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Well...all I got, minus the fluff, they were created for reasons unknown to man and maybe to humble us. Why would God create these giant masses that, for the most part, can't be seen with the naked eye (especially for ancient man) to humble us? Too show man that "hey, I can create useless balls of gasses and rock, how bout that!"? Maybe in our immediate solar system, I might be able to give you that. but what about solar systems billions of miles away?
Also, I'm not sure where you're going with the gravitational forces. Help me out.

First, it is you who say they are useless...and to your limited knowledge they are useless...therefore, they can only be useless...

Well, how about gravitational forces...it is gravitational forces that make high tide and low tide. It is gravitational forces that make us rotate around the sun. It is gravitational forces (plus other things) that actually effect the ability for the cycle of life on Earth...so why do you keep saying they are useless?

Scientist say that Earth and Mars are the only places where life can exist...the ability for Earth to have life is due to other planets and their positions......

Next, God creates things because He loves to create and share existance. It brings Him joy and glory. Why does that bother you? Consider all the animals, fish, birds, mountains, and so forth...does all of creation have to be justify to you to marvel at it? Is there no beauty in all these things? What exactly are you seeking? Are really after purpose or accusations?

MY knowledge is limited and not OUR knowledge is limited? Enlighten me. Oh gravity?

Do I believe the moon was created specifically for the tides? Of course not but I wasn't talking about the moon. As for the gravitational pull of the other planets on the Earth......http://drumright.ossm.edu/astronomy/forces.html Limited knowledge ;)...

Nope

Since this is about the planets, I won't go into the things God has "created" that he loves and humans somehow could live without.
Why does that bother you?
Never said it did.
Consider all the animals, fish, birds, mountains, and so forth...does all of creation have to be justify to you to marvel at it?
Of course not, but I love to know how things evolved.

Is there no beauty in all these things?
Of course there is. Were the other planets made just to be beautiful?

What exactly are you seeking? Are really after purpose or accusations?
Purpose of course :)

Why not? God is extravagant, not minimalist.

ok, God is great, but in your meek and humble opinion, why do you think he did it?
One reason is to give astronomers something to do at night.

The other would be that every time humanity makes progress by answering a question posed by science they just open up more questions. The Lord just extended this science to the sky.

Of course not, but I love to know how things evolved.
0 mass + 0 mass + time = 1 mass unit? 1 mass unit + 0 mass unit + lots of time = lots of things of mass units...of course everything evolved...what time has shown that in time all things decay....but of course evolve...

Purpose of course :)
you are that not important.

As I looked up at the stars last night, enjoying the beautiful almost fall air, I felt in awe at the mass expanse of stars and planets that I saw. The answer is obvious to it all. It was created for a purpose and for many many centuries man has mapped out the stars for purposes of navigation and to use as a calendar...way before paper was even invented. Certain constellations meant it was a certain month and they used it to guide their way through to know when harvest was coming, etc...Sailors and the such used stars to get to certain places.

Also, I'm pretty sure God created the whole universe to show off His awesome, wonderful power so that we are humbled by it and we don't think we are the center of the universe.

The other thing you'd want to look at -- the purpose of the universe might have nothing to do with human perception of value. We are such a speck within it.

Another gravity thing - Jupiter helps prevent quite a lot of objects from slamming into Earth.

"Cosmic rays come from the sun (solar energetic particles or SEP) and the galaxy (galactic cosmic rays, or GCRs). They pose a hazard not just to humans, but to the advanced electronics on which all modern space systems depend.
Cosmic rays reflect the general makeup of the universe: 85 percent protons (naked hydrogen nuclei), 14 percent alpha particles (helium nuclei), and 1 percent heavier nuclei.

Oddly, while the sun is a source of intense cosmic rays, it can also protect space crews. The solar magnetic field can deflect cosmic rays, although not as efficiently as the Earth's magnetic field does for low-Earth orbit spacecraft"
