I Cor. 14 - i will pray with the spirit and with the understanding also...

God is pleased when we pray to Him, period. it does not say anywhere in the Bible that He is more pleased with one type of prayer than the other. prayer is talking with God, and listening. so be led by God in your prayers , and in all things of life.

A person whom has the gift of tongues can't speak in tongues whenever they chose. It is God speaking through them. They do not have control over what they speak. For it is the Holy Ghost that has the power.

Back up there sister.

I can switch this gift He has given on at anytime, any day, and any moment. It is my spirit that prays according to scripture, not The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can prompt a person to yield to His leading and switch the gift on in the assembly, but the gift we are given is not dependant on Him turning it on, we can.

Ditto on that
The manifestation of tongues is only one of nine that we operate at our will.
God did his part when he gave us the gift of holy spirit, our part is to operate the manifestation of the spirit

so the more i use it the better i become at it right? which in turn magnifys my prayer and allows me to go and do more with my spirit, walk and needs?

Exactly. It is a language which requires development. The more use it is shown the better it becomes. Your walk by The Spirit become much easier. Satan does still appose you, but since you are praying on a more regular basis, his attempts against you are foiled much easier and faster by GOD.

It is a resource GOD has given you to use. The more time you spend with it, the more uses you find it has.

OP - Yes, praying to God

1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. ..."

What I'm saying is that a person can speak in tongues when they chose. what I mean is if it isn't God's will for that person to speak at that moment, they shouldn't try and speak in tongues. The bible says to try the spirits to see if it be of God or not. One evening at church this woman wasn't paying a bit of the service more than the man in the moon. All of a sudden she started speaking in tongues. And pointed at me. I tried her spirit and I said, Lord if you have a message for me that is speaking through this woman, then bring it on, I need to hear it. but if she is doing this in self, then let her be quite and sit her down. Within a few seconds, she shut up and she sat down. Speaking in tongues is not like a sprinkler system, you can't turn it on or off when you want. It is the power of the Holy Ghost working through that person.
A person can't give lessons on how to speak in tongues, if it didn't come from God, a person didn't get it at all.
I'm not implying that you do not have this gift, so don't misunderstand me.

I agree with this statement and with it I'll add that the bible says that God has given each of us a gift or gifts, and he told Paul to stir up the gift inside. I have the gift of discernment and at times it is a blessing, but other times, not so much a blessing. Because God reveals things to me that I really didn't want to know about others.

My last reply wasn't for the statement that is above it. My last reply was for the person who asked the question does a person have to have this gift of speaking in tongues. And another person replied and said that no, we don't have to have this gift but we need to use the gifts God has given us and don't let them lay dormant.

A person whom has the gift of tongues can't speak in tongues whenever they chose. It is God speaking through them. They do not have control over what they speak. For it is the Holy Ghost that has the power.

Paul said in 1Cor14 that the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. He said this in the context of exercising the gifts of tongues and prophecy. The way I see this quote is that we have the choice of whether we speak in tongues or not. There is no 'force' that takes us over. If that was so, we would not be exercising a spiritual gift in faith. We choose to exercise faith, we are not 'taken over'.

Therefore we have absolute control over whether we choose to speak in English or tongues when we pray.

What we have no control over is the inspiration of the words that we speak. Therefore, we in faith open our mouths and speak a language that we have not learned, and the Holy Spirit inspires us with the appropriate words.

When a person speaks fluently in tongues, they are speaking too fast to be able to make the words up themselves. Therefore, if there is no time to think of the words and speak them, where are the words coming from that flow out of a tongues speaker's mouth? There is a good answer to that:

It is the Holy Spirit giving the words for the speaker to speak. Therefore the words are not coming FROM the mind, but THROUGH it. The origin of the words therefore is the Holy Spirit within our own spirit.

Therefore, when we exercise faith and stop praying in English and start praying in tongues, we are activating the flow of the Holy Spirit through us to God. The Scripture says that from out of our innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. The writer says that he was talking about the flow of the Spirit through us. You can look up your concordance for the reference for that.

I believe that if a person has a manifestation where they lose their own self control and direction, I feel the need to go and cast it out in the Name of Jesus, because it is not of the Holy Spirit. One of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is self control, and anything that 'takes us over' is demonic in origin and needs to be resisted in Jesus' name.
