  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am one of many non-Christians out there who do not believe because we can not help but to find Christianity incredible. It is not something I can choose to change about myself, I just find Christianity unbelievable, just as I find Mormonism or Islam unbelievable.

At least at this point in my life, I find Christianity as unbelievable as a worldview based on Greek mythology and so I can not honestly bring myself to accept Jesus as "my lord and savior."

Assuming the Christian god is real, will I be treated like those who have never heard of Christianity? Because even though I have heard of Christianity, I honestly can not bring myself to accept it as true.

Hi and very interesting question. These are the things the LORD/Creator hates and this applies to both Christ-ians and non-Christians.
As Jesus said in the Gospels, the Gate to Eternal Life is very narrow, so it would be best to "lose the weight" of evil and hatred in order to "fit through" it. :)

http://www.scripture4all.org/

(Rotherham) Proverbs 6:16 These six things, doth YHWH hate, yea, seven, are the abomination of his soul:-- 17 Eyes that are lofty, a tongue that is false, and hands shedding innocent blood; 18 A heart contriving iniquitous devices, feet hasting to run into mischief; 19 One that uttereth lies--a false witness, and one sending forth strifes between brethren. 20 Observe thou, my son, the commandment of thy father, and do not decline from the instruction of thy mother: 21 Bind them upon thy heart continually, fasten them upon thy neck;

Well, if you don't believe, you don't believe. There is nothing you can do to change it.

And, when the day of judgment comes, not to sound mean or harsh, but you will more then likely be in hell.

But hey, if you do not believe, then there is nothing for you to worry about, since you don't believe that anything will happen. However, us Christians do worry about you, and I will certainly pray for you :)

hola MemeBuster

gracias for your thoughts :)

i think that is very honest... i think if you consider many people have a hard time believing that there is anything supernatural about the universe, or that there is a God, or that the scriptures, prophets or messiah are truly representatives of that God... it is easy to see how you would be concerned that you would be eternally punished for genuinely not understanding.

you kind of touched on something the Church calls invincible ignorance... that means people who have literally never heard the gospel, never learned anything about the messiah, the Church or the prophets. people simply left to fend for themselves... you are not such a person since you have heard, read or been told.

but that should not concern you. i think it is very important that you remember we believe God is infinitely merciful and compassionate. you will have all the time you need to learn, if that is what you genuinely desire (and i think from your words that is so).

so please, do not worry. just be genuine :) everybody, non christian, christian or catholic, has more distance to travel :) heaven is assured for no man, hell is only assured for the wicked (evil, unatoned, and no intention to atone).

This is, IMO, one of the great 'flaws' in Christianity. Those who - with the best will in the world - do not believe in the Christian tenets - will be treated the same as someone who spurned/denied/ignored god. This is far from any sort of justice.

hola The Bellman

the reason for this is that our moral code is different than the moral code of humanism. we believe 'goodness' is defined by God and that badness is defined by disobedience to what God tells us is good, or disobedience against God Himself.

as a result things like disbelief, blasphemy, and other sins against God are considered 'evil' just as we believe murder, stealing, lying and other crimes against men are considered evil... it is all because we are disobeying God.

this is very different than humanism, which is eliminates 'Gods rights' so to speak, and any crime against God... it is all about human relations. in my opinion it is difficult to objectively say which is more 'just' or which is more 'flawed,' any criteria based on theology would be rejected by humanism, any criteria based exclusively on humanism would be rejected by catholicism.

I'm sorry, it's late and so I didn't read everything in this thread, but I do have some things on my heart to share with you:

1. It is NOT us who makes ourselves believe but it is instead God who calls us, unhardens our heart, w/e, to Himself and reveals to us His salvation plan through Christ. So when you say "I am unable to believe....I just can't believe" what have you, you are speaking the truth. It is only by God's love and His grace that He makes it possible for those whom believe, to believe.

Ephesians 2:8-10

8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Verse 8 & 9 clearly state, it is not by from us that we have the gift of salvation. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, WE can do for ourselves to be saved. Instead it is God's work in us that saved us. It is Him who called us before we called unto Him. Therefore just as verse 9 says it is "not by works".

2. As for God "sending people to hell". (inc. those who have never heard His name). First off, we don't know who God does and who God doesn't send to Hell. Second, He's God, it doesn't matter whom He does or doesn't. He created us, He is God, if we don't accept Him, we get what we deserve. He chooses to whom He reveals Himself and to whom He doesn't. Through Scripture says that Creation itse;f testifies to God's workmanship. Still yet though He is God, He is the one that made us to do what He wills with. So if He made some for hell and some for Heaven, who are we to say it is right or wrong of Him? And more importantly, what other choice do we have but serve Him? If we don't we will probably (Scripture says) spend eternity in Hell (absence from Him). So am I not going to serve Him, because He does things I don't like with His own Creation? I don't think so lol.

So for me, when all is said and done. I praise God He called me out of the muck and mire of the world and into a wonderful loving relationship with the God whom created all things! For me, eternity has already started and it is good! Guess what. For you it has started as well...you're already living in absence of God in your life...in other words...Hell.

I will def pray for you that God reveals Himself to you and that you'll be of mind and heart to realize it.

God bless!

what matters is not what this or that one has committed (or "believes" or cannot "believe"? ) in their heart, separate from the others, but the love that brings them back to all the others.....

.............and that He means to pour out every kind of happiness in rivers upon those who ran away from His mercy but could not escape it......

(from the Journals of Thomas Merton)

P.S. I have added the portion in brackets.

I tried like real hard myself to believe in Christianity. I've been told by many Christians that I should "try Jesus" and invite him to come into my heart and every time I have tried that, I felt nothing. I've even read the bible and the more I do, the stronger I am in my atheism. The bible, Christianity just doesnt seem to make sense to me. I just can't bring myself to believe it. Just how do Christians do it? What am I doing wrong? Is there some magic formula to it? Therefore, I must remain in my non-belief unless there is some logical explanation to believe in the Christian God. His name is Jesus right?

What a pretty picture. Almost like the one I have below concerning the LAW and CHRIST. :)

Coll 2:14 having blotted out the handwriting in the ordinances that is against us, that was contrary to us, and he hath taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the Cross; 15 having stripped the Principalities and the Authorities, he made a shew of Them openly--having triumphed over Them in it.

Yes. One is not a picture of a book; the others are. All are man-made.

I am wondering : Do books harm people?
And I want to ask if they ever ordered people to make weapons?
NEVER
In the Holy Quran:
Allah is asking the faithful ones to be powerful and assured not to attack but to defend.
And what's the difference between attacking and defending?
Getting ready for danger is logical
But testing weapons on innocent heads is illogical
And in prophet Muhammad (PBUH) life The war is called and each group get ready. It is war of honour not war of perfidy and theft.
In any intelligent discussion everyside should say the truth and discuss the exact seen situation and never play with words.
And to answer your irony :It is true that I am the one who pasted those pictures but Am I the one who made them?
Remember the followings:
1. The photographer
2. the photograph
3. the user
4. The Maker
5. One is Humanish the other is Holy
6. Soldiers use waepons to defend and thievs use weapons to attack
7. Holy Books are well understood by religious people and misunderstood by the follwoing:
1. carelss people
2. naive
3. hypocrates
And try to look and the similarities between the books.:)

GeraldNC,

You say.......

Still yet though He is God, He is the one that made us to do what He wills with. So if He made some for hell and some for Heaven, who are we to say it is right or wrong of Him?

Such reasoning and understanding bring to mind the words of George MacDonald, a fine old Scottish Christian of the eighteenth century, from his sermon on "Light".......

But, of all evils, to misinterpret what God does, and then say the thing as interpreted must be right because God does it, is of the devil.

And from John Stuart Mill..............

To say that God's goodness may be different in kind from man's goodness, what is it but saying, with a slight change of phraseology, that God may possibly not be good?

And from George MacDonald again.....

But there are not a few who would be indignant at having their belief in God questioned, who yet seem greatly to fear imagining Him better than He is.

(With thanks to Thomas Talbott, and his book "The Inescapable Love of God", from which these quotes are drawn)

All the best
Derek

Well I will say this, I think one of the main reasons why people follow religion is because it gives us answers that we as human beings otherwise don't have. Like what happens to us after we die? Or is there a such thing as a soul? Or even, is there a God?

But in actuality mankind doesn't really know the answers to these questions. I don't find religion believable, (that's any religion) I don't believe mankind should base its belief through holy books or revealed religions. Because in reality religion is man made. It gives us answers. I can fully understand not finding religion believable.
