More so in America than anywhere else in the world there are massive amounts of overweight people. Most of them here in America also subscribe to some faction of the Christian faith.

Now to me this seems hypocritical. Not only does the bible clearly condemn the acts and mindset it takes to get fat (greed, glotony... ect) but I see no difference between an overweight person and someone who would stand in front of a child dieing of thirst with a bucket of water taunting them with it.

How many children die each day of starvation... simply because they do not have enough money to buy food or there is no food in their nation. Over 1/3rd of the world population lives under the poverty line, they do not get enough food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Yet these "Christians" can sit there and eat more food then their body needs. It is greed to it's maximum in my opinion and can not understand why instead of "supersizeing" they don't maybe save that money up and use it for something actually worthwhile, saving a child's life instead of just adding insult to those starving childreds tragity.

It also on a totaly other path of topic seems to be desecrating the our body that God created for us. I just can not see how anyone can justify such behavior with a Christian belief and allow themselves to become fat. Losing weight and/or not getting fat is not complicated at all.

recent findings suggest that, although exercise (and I suppose food choices) can help stabilize weight, genetic influence may be more prominent than previously thought.

In fact, recent findings in the field of epigenetics indicate that weight may be, in part, determined from dietary intake of progenitors two or three generations back...
While I believe that may be true to a degree, (my parents werent/arent over
weight and me and my siblings arent
really too much out of line),
it's evident just by observing your
friend's/relative's/neighbors habits
that it's mostly due to lust of the flesh.

We're a fat country, in many ways, and
it's apparant that we're all feeding our
flesh better than our spirit, because
otherwise we'd have the fruit of self
control.

Anyone snacking right now?
Cos you're hungry or just because?
sorry, had to...

hhhmmm.. Well this is what Jesus says
Mat 15:11 "It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."

There are a few rare diseases that cause people to gain weight uncontrollably. And by rare I mean less than 1% of people who are obese suffer from them.

People who are fat are fat because they consume more calories than they need to maintain a healthy weight. It can not be supriseing if all you do is sit in an office on a computer all day and eat 3000cals a day that you get fat. Genetics can not be blamed.

The average human needs about 1500cals a day to be healthy in an "active" lifestyle. To put that in prospective, if you eat a bowel of cereal and an apple in the morning, a tuna sandwich, fruit drink and mixed ventables at lunch and 4-6oz of lean meat, 50g of rice and ventable at supper... thats about 1500cals.

How many of the people you know can say that livening an active lifestyle they consume around that amount....

If I remember correctly, this study found that dietary deprivation in the grandparents or great grandparents (famine or war) effected BMI .

In some cases it may be gluttony, but that is a sin that can find many expressions in humans :)

But it helps to remind me that I never know the conditions in someone else life ...

As for me, I'm kinda thin -- and I'm eating my 'night-time toast'
it helps me sleep ^_^

This was not a study of disease -- and the genetic and epigenetic predisposition can likely be compounded by food and exercise choices and ... also consider that in the US we eat largely grain fed meats ... I have several friends with (I think) austere diets, busy lives and daily exercise regimes ... and they are overweight.

I'm fairly thin, our kids are ... so this is not for me :)

I just worry when it becomes easy to find distress in another person,

LOL.
Yes, I have many/most of my friends
are struggling with weight, and in fact
I went on this med a few years back
which changed my metabolism and WOW
it's no fun battling the bulge.
So anyhow, I pray for them sometimes
and always encourage them.

Drinking my nightime snack
(helps me sleep too) lol

I'm sure it is an intreting study, how ever the fact remains that anyone (with the small minority with those diseases) who eats a proper diet and exersizes will not become overweight. You can not gain weight from calories that you do not ingest. It seems greedy and selfish and down right disrespectful those who just stuff their face, it goes against the values of Christianity on so many levels.

Christians today, for the most part, believe that you can eat anything that you want to, as long as you ask a blessing on it.

The truth is that God set rules for us...about how to maintain good health. The were the health laws and they are still very much in effect.

But so many Christians like pork products. And they have been improperly taught that all food is OK to eat.

Pigs/swine, is the lowest form of carnal flesh, and God uses pigs/swine as negative examples all through the Word.

Hypothetical question....

Would you allow you child to eat vulture meat? Or skunk meat? or Raccoon meat? Well, God likens pig meat to these animals.

A scavenger has a purpose but it is not to be eaten by us. It is unclean, and as such should be avoided. But pork chops and bacon are staples in this society. Bad health follows.

Break the health laws and pay the price. That goes for smoking and eating foods with additives, and junk food.

Not that I am perfect in this regard, but I gave up pork when I learned the truth, and years later, I am healthier for it. It's not that hard. Chicken bacon is pretty good.

I agree some people are greedy, but other factors can effect weight gain. My husband is taking medication for a heart condition and nerve damage. Doesn't eat much, active, almost vegetarian -- the medication causes weight gain "out of thin air".

The study proposes that in some genetic types, the body retains more in the event of famine. Also, grain fed meats have an inferior fat profile
(as does milk from grain fed cows), making their fats less efficiently metabolized -- basically you have to eat more to achieve a similar nutritional status. There is also some evidence that the fat in milk from pastured animals will actually asist in weight loss.

I do not wish to support a culture that is wasteful -- and uses far too much of the world's resources. Instead, I think it prudent to not assume what we "see" can only indicate one source for the "symptom"

MezzaMorta, you speak with such Divine authority.

"the Bible clearly condemns the acts and mindset it takes to get fat"
Do you happen to have Scriptural support for you suppostion?

"I see no difference between an overweight person and someone who would stand in front of a child dieing of thirst with a bucket of water taunting them with it."
Then you are pretty blind. Maybe you should get your eyes examined.

"How many children die each day of starvation... simply because they do not have enough money to buy food or there is no food in their nation."
What does THIS have to do with the price of tea in China?
Would you rather have many more people dying of starvation?
I mean, what's your point?

"Yet these "Christians" can sit there and eat more food then their body needs. It is greed to its maximum."
Ha ha. This is amazing.
Do YOU only eat the exact amount of Calories to keep yourself alive?
And, exactly how many Calories is that?

"they don't maybe save that money up and use it for something actually worthwhile, saving a child's life."
Please tell us how much money you have donated over the last year to feeding starving children.

" I just can not see how anyone can justify such behavior with a Christian belief and allow themselves to become fat."
What behavior are you referring to?

It was a metaphor, my eyes are not important. The act of blatant greed and disrespect is what is important.

"How many children die each day of starvation... simply because they do not have enough money to buy food or there is no food in their nation."

Alot, there are people on this earth that die from the fact they do not have food. Yet people here and though out the world consume copious amounts of food daily. The cost of that extra "big mac" could feed a family.

Would you rather have many more people dying of starvation?

No one is going to die from eating health and appropriate amounts of food.

"Yet these "Christians" can sit there and eat more food then their body needs. It is greed to its maximum."
Ha ha. This is amazing.

And, exactly how many Calories is that?

I play sports in university so my diet is very tightly controlled. I eat approx 2600cals per day, but even when I am not on cycle, i do not pig out. I eat an appropriate amount of food to be healthy and satsifyed. I am not fat is that is what you are getting at.

"they don't maybe save that money up and use it for something actually worthwhile, saving a child's life."
Please tell us how much money you have donated over the last year to feeding starving children.

Approx 1/4 of my monthly income i contribute to various charity's.

" I just can not see how anyone can justify such behavior with a Christian belief and allow themselves to become fat."
What behavior are you referring to?

The behavior and mentality that one must surcome to in order to become vastly overweight.
