(List courtesy of +veritas+ from CA Forums. source)National Catholic Register - www.ncregister.com/current
Weekly Catholic newspaper, global and US news -- fabulous! It is run by the Legionaries of Christ, so you certainly never have to worry about its orthodoxy!
Our Sunday Visitor - www.osv.com
Another Catholic weekly newspaper, also pretty good, not quite as solid (in my opinion) as the NC Register, but decent. It might be less expensive too, I am not sure.
L'Osservatore Romano - http://www.vatican.va/news_services/or/home_eng.html
Offical Vatican weekly newspaper -- good stuff. English print edition is delayed a bit if you get a subscription, plus it is expensive... too bad.
Magnificat - www.magnificat.net
Monthly pocket-sized devotion guide/missal with wonderful meditations for the day, the proper prayers/readings for Mass, and great articles etc etc... get a free sample copy from their website! I LOVE this little magazine, everything about it is just right, a great spiritual aid!
This Rock - http://www.catholic.com/magazines/thisrock.asp
Catholic Answers' own apologetics monthly -- need I say more?
LayWitness - http://www.cuf.org/Laywitness/index.asp
Just plain great, good apologetics reading and faith formation (owned by Catholics United for the Faith).
The Catholic Answer - http://catalog.osv.com/Catalog.aspx?ProductCode=TCA
Another magazine put out by Our Sunday Visitor, a bimonthly mag that is mostly apologetics and faith formation. Solid stuff, not very deep though, better for people who need basic Catholic information or who are just learning the faith. Solidly orthodox.
Crisis magazine - www.crisismagazine.com
Monthly informational magazine, with topics on just about everything from a solid Catholic persepective. Has swung a bit farther to the politically conservative side (not just Catholic "conservative", ie orthodox theologically) since the founder left, not that that is a bad thing, just know where they're coming from.
Inside the Vatican - http://www.insidethevatican.com/
Neat monthly magazine that focuses on Rome/Vatican news and issues of interest. Pretty solid and has a history of some great writers.
Latin Mass Magazine - http://www.latinmassmagazine.com/
Magazine for those who prefer traditional conservative liturgy -- and still in communion with the Holy Father!! Good for those of you who are interested in authentic Vatican II liturgy that uses Latin, or who attend indult Tridentine Masses and want a good magazine that is not schismatic.
Adoremus Bulletin - http://www.adoremus.org/
Society for the Renewal of the Sacred Liturgy -- solidly orthodox Catholic, in communion with Rome. Their monthly bulletin deals with all kinds of liturgical issues regarding the current Mass (not the pre-Vatican II Mass, though I have seen some favorable stuff in there regarding indult Tridentine Masses). This is THE place to go if you have questions about how your parish Masses are celebrated, or want to learn more (keep updated) on the latest words from the Vatican regarding liturgy and the sacraments.
First Things - www.firstthings.com
Ecumenical monthly journal on current events/politics, philosophy, theology, ethics, etc... The founder is a wonderful priest, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus. Very Catholic friendly, but also has good evangelical/Protestant and Eastern Orthodox articles.
Logos: A Catholic Journal of Thought and Culture - http://www.stthomas.edu/cathstudies/logos/
Great academic journal published by my university's Catholic Studies department, the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Totally orthodox, beautiful. Insightful articles on Catholic literature, art, philosophy, political thought, etc.
Homiletic & Pastoral Review - http://www.hprweb.com/
All right, so it's geared for priests, but anyone can read it - it's published by Ignatius Press I believe. It has many wonderful (and pretty readable) articles by priests, bishops and laity on issues that are important to your pastor -- liturgy issues, pastoral issues, sacrament help, etc etc... wonderful reading to see what kind of problems your priests are facing every day, and what the "current items" are for priests to know about. In fact, if your parish priest does not have a subscription to this, I would get him a gift subscription!
Ethics and Medics - http://www.ethicsandmedics.com/
Publication journal of the National Catholic Bioethics Center -- great for those of you who are interested in what's going on in the moral arena these days, embryonic stem cells, abortion, euthanasia, "mercy-killing" etc.
Gilbert! - http://www.gilbertmagazine.com/
G.K. Chesterton Society's publication -- wit and wisdom from one of the great Catholic convert authors of the 20th century!
STAY AWAY FROM:
* National Catholic Reporter (politically liberal, unorthdox bordering on heretical)
* America (Jesuit magazine, same as NC Reporter)
* Catholic Digest (unorthodox, and shallow to boot. Just like Reader's Digest.)
* Commonweal ("progressive" to say the least)
* Ministry & Liturgy (defiant of Rome, "my way or the high way" progressives)
* The Wanderer (not liberal -- incredibly right-wing, bordering on vengeful detraction. It's not worth the harshness and mean spirit it has towards the Church in general, and it tends towards schismatic SSPX behavior, though it does not identify itself as such)
Neutral -- why bother with so many other better ones out there?:
* St. Anthony Messenger (shallow, weak theology, bathroom reading if you ask me. Some good articles occassionally.)
* US Catholic (Shallow, not much substance)
* The Word Among Us (same)
* Envoy (orthodox magazine, but very unreliable, in financial troubles I guess)
