  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am entertaining the idea of possibly moving to Portland within the next few months. Is there anybody that lives there that could tell me how it is and if they like it or not?

Never lived there but been thru there enough times. Its big, busy and the highway/freeway system aint too bad - unless you get caught in rush hour... The airport aint too bad - flown out of there before.

Got family/kinfolk across the river in Vancouver area and downstream towards Longview/Kelso - not too bad a place to live if you dont mind a commute to Portland or Vancouver.

I live an hour east of Oakland/San Fransisco and I would prefer to be up in Portland/Vancouver area but alas...:sigh:

Portland is a fine city for people who like real city life. Ideal situation would be to live/work across the river in Vancouver (no income tax) and shop in Portland (no sales tax) <G>

I've done that, the commute is HORRIBLE, at least if you go during typical rush hour.

I LOVE Portland, I'd hate to leave. If you have any specific questions, let me know :)

Well we just so happen to live under the same roof, so I'm sure we can come up with something good :D

^_^

I actually do have a couple of questions. I have been looking at apts in the area and I was just wondering if there were any areas that I should avoid or something like that? Is it really expensive to live like downtown in the city, or is it better to be on the outskirts? (BTW, I am a total city girl, so I would prefer to be there, but not if its super expensive)

Also, I am going to be there a couple days this summer to kinda check things out, is there anywhere that I should go to really get a feel for the city?

You basically have two major choices, and lots of choices inside those. I'll give you my obviously biased opinion ;)

There's the west side (Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin) - it has confusing streets, everything is too spread out, there are no good highways and bad traffic because of it...but it has the nicer shopping areas/malls (look up Washington Square, Bridgeport Village and Streets of Tanasbourne).

Or there's the east side (most of Portland, Gresham) - the streets and traffic are light years better, but it's just typical shopping, nothing spectacular.

I like the east side, because you can always go visit any area of Portland, and I'd go crazy living on the west side of the river (except downtown, which would be great). If there's a more specific area based on a job or something, then I can help you find an area that would help out with the commute and keep you away from the sketchy areas, even though there aren't really that many.

Well if you are a city girl like me, then you will most likely want to live right downtown- except apartments are VERY expensive (I looked into them before we bought our house).... Do you have a job lined up already?

Nope, no job yet. I still have a couple of months, but I'm gonna start seeing what is out there fairly soon.

I live in Vancouver, WA. Portland is not the city I would choose. It doesn't have the night life that other cities can brag about. On the plus side, Portland has plenty of liberals. It is right there on the liberal scale next to Berkeley and San Francisco.

While you are in Portland, check out Tigard, and Lake Oswego. They are cool towns. Don't listen to TempestTossed;) .
Hey TempestTossed, my grandma lives in Vancouver. Vancouver is a good place. I am visiting there tomorrow.
