  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

And then along came Mary...

Every English version of the Bible mistranslated the verse, but you have the
correct translation?
No offence but doesn't that sound odd
to yourself?

There must be a reason that the verse
was universally translated this way.

No we have the original language it was written...the EOC doesn't use translations..

the subsequent translations to English? Are they Mis-translations? Can you explain their uniformity of error?
Ya gotta admit, it is a curious error, if that's what it is, eh? I just wondered what your opinion of that phenomena is bro, before I go parsin' Greek.

It is what it is. The original Greek says menoun, and menoun does not mean rather..

Could be that the Bible was translated by reformers..

Repetition of error?

Another verse is the last line of the Lord's Prayer. Correctly translated it says "deliver us from the evil one", not "deliver us from evil"

My favourite though is Mark 1:6 and Matthew 3:4. Every translation in English and many other languages state that John the Forerunner ate locusts and wild honey, yet the word translated as "locusts" also means "young shoots", the new growth on plants, and this is what we understand was his food in the Orthodox Church and have understood for centuries. One mistranslation early on can go a looooong way.

No, Mary would never try to upstage Jesus.
I'm sure she always pointed towards Him.
Exactly. give the woman a prize.

And when we honor her today all glory goes straight to God like a boomerang off of her on to God.

I had never heard of a protestant before I came on board here tee hee. I had to ask my husband what it was.. He told me I am one LOL.. So then He explained it to me.. Reformers was another one I had to ask about. So all of this stuff was new to me when I came to this site.. I only knew what the bible taught me.. I even had to ask about Luther.. My husband and I have had many conversations about all of this.. We have read scripture and this has stirred me to so study what Catholics claim and believe. I never knew half of it until I came here..

Oh I didn't know alot of things about alot of things till I came here. It is amazing. I just started a thread on the ECF...and how there are obvious contradictions...and that is why I won't read them..nor hold them to the same standard as the Word. Anyway...just amazing what happens here at CF. You learn some things..regret some things...and sometimes,i walk away shaking my head.

I see.
So the Biblical scholars translated it using the rather, and the posters here are using the verily.

Whats really amazing, is how you talk about you won't read the ECF, but every time you pick up a Bible, you need to say a word of thanks that they persevered to where you could have one. The complete and utter ignorance of people when it comes to the 1500 years before Luther astounds me. Amazing how Protestants will talk until they are blue in the face about how the Holy Spirit preserved the Bible until the time of the Reformation, but will stop just this side of saying that the Church that the Holy Spirit used to preserve it, is Satan's tool. Get a grip! Whether you like it or not, the Catholic church is who kept Scripture alive all the way until now.

Well actually I Give thanks to God for keeping His word preserved for us.. I don't care where He kept it. It is the point that He did once again proving Him to be faithful..

But isn't it always translated from the
original.
It's not translated from translations.
I wonder which word the Vulgate
chose when translating.

I suspected I would need to look at the Greek myself, rather(verily) than take repentant's word for it.
You could leave that word out completely, and the verse would still stand as a correction to the woman declaring Mary's paps & womb as blessed...
unless I'm too busy hero worshipping her to notice.;)

Well, Proe...
I have to admit, the RCC did keep scripture, they even outlawed us havin' our own copy, but they didn't keep it alive. I think we can safely say the Holy Spirit kept it alive in spite of the RCC grip on it.

And I completely sympathize with you about people's ignorance. It is indeed important to know all the errors that led up to Luther's reforms, limited as they were.

Before more of your fan club here start licking your bootstraps, you may want to look at what you posted and correct yourself. I am quite sure you don't follow Luther's reforms, or even those of his contemporaries right after. Because then you would know that Luther venerated Mary himself.

As far as the Church keeping Scripture, the arguement that is happening in this thread is exactly why they we're against translations being thrown about everywhere. What was the used definition and interpretation, is now argued about like crazy. No wonder there is so many denominations eh? "Everyone" has their own "interpretation" now since they all have their own set of Scripture, no matter how poorly translated, paraphrased, watered down and butchered it is.
