Hi everyone. Do you know what you are praying when you pray in tongues? I don't. I don't know if this is normal or not. :help:

well, to be honest, i've only had this pleasure a handful of times and when it was done, no, i couldnt tell you what words i'd said.
HOWEVER, i ALWAYS have a strong feeling about what was being spoken to me by the Spirit.

for instance, the first time i fell in the Spirit, it was at a time i was feeling i'd 'failed' God and was in heavy repentance.
i didnt understand what was happening to me or what i was saying while it was going on, but when it was over, i was SO comforted and this thought popped into my head: 'MY LOVE HAS NOT LEFT YOU.'

hope that helps.

I usually never know what I pray for when I pray in tongues. That doesn't stop me from praying, as I seen some truly amazing things done with that sort of prayer, but it's more about giving yourself over to The Holy Spirit to allow Him to pray through you.

We have the control to switch the gift on or off, but the inability to know exactly everything going on in the process does hinder some people from taking their step toward this gift, or even continuing in the gift once they receive. Do yourself a favor,...never stop using the gift, later on you will be glad you didn't. It is one of the faith building tools for yourself.

Wow, you just reminded me of that feeling; it's been a while since I prayed in tongues. But one time I was in that frame of mind...in heavy repentance.

I noticed a few times when I started praying in tongues, certain word shapes would come up. After researching them I found they were names for God and parts of Hebrew prayers. Mostly they were God's warrior names - I assume I was praying about spiritual warfare or something? Anyhoo, mostly I don't have a clue what is said.

Wow that is very interesting. I also usually don't have a clue what I am saying when I pray in tongues. Weirdly enough, a friend of mine seems to think that if you don't know what you're saying then you're not really praying. I explained to him that praying in tongues is the Spirit communicating to God through us and he seemed to understand then.

Whether the language that the Holy Spirit gives us is a language of men, or a heavenly language( of angels) it is a miracle of speech and unknown to the speaker.

What a tremendous thing it is to pray and praise and sing to the Lord, in the language inspired by the Holy Spirit,as well as our own! No interpretation is required unless addressing people. When we pray 'in the Spirit', we are not praying with the 'understanding'. The Holy Spirit is praying through us, making intercession, building us up and edifying us. Praise the Lord!

 sometimes The Lord does allow me know know what i am praying about, the Bible says that we can pray that we would be able to interpret when we are speaking.( I Cor 14:13)
it is good to pray in the spirit because God knows what we need, (Rom. 8:26-28;I Cor 14: 14-15) He knows us way better than we know ourselves, because our spirit is his candle,(Prov. 20:27) and He knows our heart.(I Sam 16:7)
blessings...
and keep praying!

Wow. I did not realize that we could interpret our own things. But praying in tongues is different from speaking in tongues and the verse from First Corinthians is referring to speaking in tongues and not praying in tongues right?

My mum says that praying in tongues is effective because sometimes we don't know what we need to be praying for, but the Spirit does. And also, in our own tongue where we may run out of words, our prayer tongue never runs out. She says our words are more anointed when we speak in our heavenly language but that we can still pray in our earth language too :D

Sometimes I wonder if people are just making it all up.

I think that the difference is what you believe you are doing when you are speaking/praying in tongues. If you have gone through the process with God in asking for and receiving it by faith, and then you start speaking in faith, then your faith tells you that you are speaking in an articulate language that God understands.

If you just start speaking gobbledygook and thats all you believe you are doing, then that's exactly what you are doing.

Do you see the difference?

i believe there are people out there that get wrapped up in 'emotionalism' and get carried away, but that's between them and God.

I think that the people who get carried away in emotionalism are making an error based on the false teaching that tongues is an 'ecstatic' language spoken only when a person is highly emotionally charged or in a trancelike state. Most people who genuinely speak in tongues believe that speaking is always in the control of the speaker, and is usually spoken while the person is in a normal state of mind and is able to deliberately form words and phrases which they believe is an articulate language understood by the Lord. Actually, when we speak in tongues, we don't have to 'feel' anything emotionally, because faith is a cold blooded choice to do something because we believe in it. Our state of mind is inconsequential when speaking in tongues to the Lord. What is signification is that the Lord understands what we are saying, and puts things into motion on our behalf as the result of us exercising our faith and communicating with Him in this way.
