Do you know what you're praying when you pray in tongues?

Wow. I did not realize that we could interpret our own things. But praying in tongues is different from speaking in tongues and the verse from First Corinthians is referring to speaking in tongues and not praying in tongues right?
from my understanding it refers to both. i am not a Bible scholar... from what i have been taught, when we speak in tongues in prayer and speak in a service it is TWO different situations. but, God can reveal to us what we are speaking in either situation. i would say that God is the one who gives the interpretation if He chooses to.
you know, you can always ask your pastor:preach: ...i love to ask my pastor questions in Bible Study, and he encourages us to ask. if he believes in this, he can certainly help you.

Not usually, however on several occasions, I have been singing in tongues and some how gone from tongues into English and back again with songs I have never heard before? Each time one thing has remained simular and that is the English words have always been praises to God. My musical ability has never been much, and the idea that I am singing a new song is just so awesome, it makes my heart leap! The other thing that happens occasionally is I will be singing along with the radio of CD with a good praise tune and will go into tongues, I often have wondered if the tongues I am speaking are actually the words written to that tune?

Great thread...

I haven't really known what I was saying when I was praying in tongues. I think that this is normal. It came during times when I did not know how I should have been praying. The speaking of tongues seemed to complete my requests to the Lord. I was brought closer to Him and felt that the Spirit portrayed my emotions and needs far better than any English could. Praise God!

Sometimes I understand what I am speaking, sometimes not. If I ask the Lord for the interpretation, He almost always gives me the translation.

It stretches me to pray in tongues, and then interpret. Often I'm amazed at something the Lord is speaking through me and I have to thumb through my Bible to understand.

But this I know. God is awesome.
