  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is scary. Pray for our Serbian brothers and sisters.

The link is not working but I was in Serbia in 2001 and saw first hand the destruction that they had not yet recovered from.

I was told by my Serbian husband who lived through the bombings that many of those churches were not being used as churches anymore (from just before the bombings) and were being used by the military however.

Nevertheless, my heart breaks at the destruction.

I think that because of nationalists such as Milosovic, the ordinary John Doe Orthodox have been given a bad name and because of this; what does the US do? Sit back and watch because "Those people are Serb nationalists and their Church supports the murderers" but fail to remember that the opinions of the people and the government are two completely different opinions. For one 2+2=4 and for the other 2+2=22.

Why does the government and the UN claim to try and help the people, but when it comes right down to it they sit back because of lack of interest? Corruption. Lies. Greed. Rwanda, the Holocaust and other bits of death and semi-genocide have come and gone and they say "never again" but the next week when "acts of genocide" occur, they sit their in their fancy chairs and fancy cars and do nothing because all that is happening is "acts" of genocide and supposedly not genocide.

There is nothing that I hate more than those who mix nationalism with religion because such a mix is disastrous and often ends in loss of life of those who did nothing but exist.

Amnesty International did get a friend of my husband out of an Albianoan Concentration camp. I never met anyone who was helped by Amnesty International before but what they did was fantastic. They brought him to the US and helped connect him to a Serbian Orthodox Church who in turn helped him find work and a place to live.

People forget that the propaganda Milosovic and his people spread. He had a lot of the older generations especially convinced of lots of falsehoods. I don't think it is fair, as you said to judge the average person in Serbia who really was left unaware.

(Makes me wonder often what I am unaware of and what falsehoods I have come to believe.)

"The United States has never in its history intervened to stop genocide and has in fact rarely even made a point of condemning it as it has occurred." --Samantha Power, A Problem From Hell: America in the Age of Genocide

So we had nothing at all to do with liberating the Jews from the Nazis?

Kas - some of us are awake. Believe me.

We did to an extent, but that's not why we got involved in the war. We didn't -intervene- to stop genocide. We liberated camps after millions had already been killed. And the only reason we got involved in the war was not because of the Holocaust but because of Pearl Harbor. Again and again genocide happens and we say "never again" and then do nothing. You would be shocked. Do you know it took 17 years of a congressman reading about genocides DAILY before we would simply pass a -condemantion of genocide-. Not saying to get involved, just to say "yeah, we think genocide is bad." Did you know we tried to put the Khmer Rouge back into power? It's very very scary.

God forgive us. :crosseo:
