  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I understand that the Jewish concept of Hell is markedly different from the fire and brimstone concept of Christianity. One of the ideas is that you don't stay in the place of judgement for eternity. But what about Daniel 12:2?

And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awaken-these for eternal life, and those for disgrace, for eternal abhorrence.

Seems to me that the last couple of words are advocating eternal judgement.

Hi. Concepts of the "hell" in the Bible differ among the different sects/denominations of "christ-endom".
Also, why would Jews join Islam and believe in their concept of "hellfire" which is not much different than most of christianity's view of it? Thoughts?

geenna (Strong's 1067) occurs 12 times in 12 verses:

http://www.bible-history.com/jerusalem/firstcenturyjerusalem_hinnom_valley.html

This place was an actual place in the physical world that had a physical fire to reduce the levels of waste and the dogs went around searching for food. When two dogs fought for bones and whatnot…there were times when their teeth would grind and a high picth scream of the dogs. There was some much unclean stuff that the fire never went out in a physical reality. So then, don’t become worthless so you don’t get thrown in there…be renewed in the image of Jesus so that you become a completed creation of God that loves full all people in the face of their oppostion.

All the rubbish of Jerusalem was burnt here. Its interesting to note that Aceldama (Field of Blood) was here in this valley.

John 8:44 `Ye are of a father--the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him;

Reve 20:10 And the devil, the one deceiving them was cast into the lake of the fire and of sulfur, the where also the wild beast and the false prophet and they shall be being tormented of day and of night into the ages of the ages.

The old notion of the medieval hell, with its grotesque and endless torments, has been rejected very generally as something monstrously and blasphemously incredible. But for all who believe in the divine origin of man, his fall, resurrection, and subsequent immortality, there must remain the hope of happiness or foreboding of punishment, and the very uncertainty concerning the exact nature and duration of the latter makes the subject, for them, one of imperishable interest.

I think most Jews including me do not believe in Hell. However we do believe in some type of Purgatory that those who do bad will go to for no longer then 12 months. Think of it as sort of a Rehab or temporary Jail to give you time to change, repent, among others. Then after you repent, and go through this stage, you get closer to G-d.

As a Jew I focus more on life here on earth then thinking of the Afterlife.

Doesn't the catholic denomination also believe in a "purgatory"?

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12575a.htm

Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.......................
====================
Also what is your view of the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus from a "Jewish" perspective? Shalom and thanks.

http://users.aristotle.net/~bhuie/lazarus.htm

.............The parable of Lazarus and the rich man, long used by mainstream ministers to teach the reality of "hell," really has nothing to say about punishment or reward in the afterlife. Christ used this story, which fit the common misconception about life after death in his day, to show the fate that awaited the Jewish nation because of the unbelief and faithlessness which led them to reject him as the Messiah.

You are correct, as do many other Protestant religions (Orthodox, maybe Episcopals/Angligans.) The Catholic Church uses the Old Testament usually to justify their belief, and They also use 2 Macabees to, as well as a few verses from Matthew among others that talk about praying for the Dead, or something along those lines.

So in reality, it's not just Jews who believe in Purgatory. :)
