I don't think they plan on making a new system for about 8 to 10 years.
But that' just my guess.

8 to 10 is too long. I can see four to five, but the power just wont last 8 to 10, since companies like microsoft or nintendo will be on their second or third system after this current gen by then.

They also took a big lose when some specialists said how much the system's costs were to make the thing.

Sony will stay in the hole with this system for a few years.
Which isn't a big deal because Sony is mega huge and they can afford it.
In time, they will catch back up and start to make some money off of this machine.

Sony can't afford to take huge hits seeing as how they make almost 60% of their profits from the gaming side alone.

The PS3 is supposed to be a 10 year system. Seeing that it has double the power of the 360, I think it could hold up for at least 6 or 7.

The PS3's graphics will be at the forefront of this coming generation of consoles. It's got the strongest hardware of the bunch when it comes to graphics rendering. The Wii, on the other hand, will have the weakest graphics of this generation of consoles, but that's not to say it's the weakest entry. The Wii's purpose, as stated by Nintendo, is to move away from trying to increase graphics performance and to move towards making games more fun.

In my opinion the difference between the XBox and 360 is pretty pronounced. If you haven't yet taken a look at Gears of War in high-definition, I suggest you do so. It's a pretty good example of what the console is capable of.

The difference between the PS2 and PS3 will be greater than between the XBox and 360, though.

If you're only planning on getting one console you have an interesting choice to make, though. The PS3 will look the prettiest and will have some great games, to be sure. But of the bunch the Wii will be the most innovative and probably the most fun to play.

And honestly...$600+ for a game system you CAN'T upgrade? If you have money to burn, then go for it...but if you wait a year there will be a price drop. (some people say there won't....but because of the major loss Sony took they NEED to make it up.)

Well, it's more upgradeable than any of the others. At least this one you can easily swap in another hard drive. (And not a ridiculously overpriced snap on one, I mean a standard laptop hard drive) It's still not much, but it's a step in the right direction.

Yes, but those computers cost 4 and 5 times as much. And these are the earliest PS3 games, they'll get much better by the end. I'm not saying it will last ten years, but it will be able to last a while.

Well more than two times as much. Three times as much is comparable. I'd say between three and four times as much to match and five times as much to keep up for a while. I spent $1800 on mine about 10 months ago and it's still up there, but it's still below some of the shots I've seen of the better looking PS3 games, and the later ones will blow what my computer can do out of the water. Though I suppose I'm also including stuff like a monitor and speakers and stuff that you wouldn't count when talking about the price of a game system. I could probably upgrade to beat what I've seen for between two and three times as much, but that'd be keeping a decent number of components.

My current PC cost $900 but that's just for the case and hardware. I installed the OS myself and used all the peripherals from my old PC. I made sure it was upgradeable so I can boost it up later but for now, it runs anything I throw at it. Way to go, Computer Universe.

Goodness me, if you're going to throw a monitor in there do remember to adjust the cost of the PS3 to include that of a high-definition TV set so that the improved graphics are actually visible.

Right, I realized that halfway through my post. That's the part that throws the whole PS3/XBox 360 is cheaper than a computer argument.

We're talking about comparable systems here. A computer with 2.5 terabytes of storage space is hardly comparable to a PS3. The cost of that computer system is justified, simply because its components are bleeding edge in the extreme. The PS3's are not.

Its processors are certainly impressive, but it's not the same as a full-fledged desktop where every single component is top-of-the-line.
