PS3, here we come

So about seven of us are signed up on an official-looking schedule to wait at Wal-Mart for the PS3 release. Our CEO will begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, and we will have at least two people (total) waiting throughout the day. I have the 8-midnight shift.

Of course, if they get there tomorrow morning and there's more than 5 people waiting (the store has about 5 units), then we'll call the whole thing and bide our time.

Um...that would be insanely stupid. Explain to me why Sony would make such a stupid mistake as to not ship any more systems before the new year.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I heard the same thing for the God...I mean Halobox...I mean Xbox 360 back when it came out. And it ended up doing all right, yes?

Yeah, I saw some article on the internet with a picture of a line of people waiting outside a store over the weekend for the PS-3.

I thought they were going to ship them en masse until Christmas, I'll probably end up buying one by spring, the xbox-360's still entertaining me for now.

Not to sully up a PS3 thread with talk of the Wii, but seriously, what the heck, Sony? Nintendo is throwing their console at stores by baker's dozens. There are three Targets in my town. They alone will be receiving a grand total of 330 Wii consoles opening day, according to http://wickedsick.org/wii_finder/ (for reference, area codes 949 and 714 are me). And that's only the Targets.

I'm waiting around a year before I get one. It'll have dropped $200 by then. They just won't make enough off the 400k they are selling...considering how much money they put into it.

For now, PS3 just seems like a waste of money to me. Too expensive, no must-have launch titles, none available, new technology in the blue-ray (and thus, likely flawed) and now they say the backward compatibility is flawed too.

When Microsoft's Xbox 360 was released almost a year ago, one of the knocks on the system was that it wasn't fully backward compatible with original Xbox games. The 360, which uses a different CPU and GPU from the original Xbox, can play some Xbox games through software emulation. However, the emulation has so far only been applied to a few hundred titles.

Sony, too, had planned to go the backward-compatibility route. To avoid the emulation pitfalls encountered by Microsoft, the company put PlayStation and PlayStation 2 hardware inside the PlayStation 3. However, it appears that even this approach to backward compatibility is having its problems.

On its Japanese Web site, the electronics giant has said that some issues are arising when attempting to run certain PlayStation and PS2 games on the PS3, according to Bloomberg. Sony has not stated how many games are being affected, but Reuters claims approximately 200 games in the PS and PS2 catalog have some issues.

A Sony spokesperson told GameSpot, "We are aware that a select number of titles have compatibility issues but these problems will be fixed with a software upgrade that will be available in the near future."

A Web site has been set up for Japanese users to see which games have compatibility issues and which may not work due to other problems. Titles with problems include Final Fantasy XI, Silent Hill 2, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, and Tekken 5.

The console was released in Japan on November 11 and promptly sold out. Sony will have approximately 400,000 PS3s available for the system's North American launch this Friday, and the company expects the backward-compatibility issue to also affect those units.

The earliest I recall any system dropping their price has been 2 years. And even then it wasn't more than 100$.

EXCEPT...the news today said Sony lost big in their stock and sales with the PS3....the loss hit them hard...and no one is fooling themselves into thinking that the holiday will make a big difference (We all know the Wii will win the holiday)

As it stands right now...the PS3 is a money leak. They had to do something soon or they'll just keep losing. I mean, this is a Sega Saturn kind of loss.

They also took a big lose when some specialists said how much the system's costs were to make the thing.

Sony will stay in the hole with this system for a few years.
Which isn't a big deal because Sony is mega huge and they can afford it.
In time, they will catch back up and start to make some money off of this machine.

I don't think they plan on making a new system for about 8 to 10 years.
But that' just my guess.
