Well it looks like Ive made it to the 15th post.....

As for ReiserFS, I like it and currently using it on my Freespire/Linspire boxes.

Unfortuantely ReiserFS has been in the news a lot lately, the lead developer has been arrested and charged with the murder of his ex-wife.

So Im not sure how long Reiser will be supported, already there have been moves on the Novell and Linspire parts to incorporate other file system types in their newer releases.

Lets try that link now shall we?

Im not sure if that will work, that deals with the scenerio of a dual boot with Linux on the Mac-Intel

hm. I will read it more thoroughly, but I can't seem to find out how to mount the drive IN OS X

There is a lot in Google concerning this, It would probably take some reading.

Im of course assuming that you want to use Reiser as the filing system for your Mac?

Not really. I have an external drive, a Maxtor OneTouch III, 1TB. This drive has FireWire (400 and 800) and USB 2.0.

Now, I need to access the drive from my wife´s computer and my own ones. I also need some way to access my data from the net. The solution is a WL700gE router - and a USB2.0 connection to the drive.

I need to access the drive, hence, from three OSs. One, the Linux distro on the router. Two, Mac OS X (10.4) and three; Windows. I could format it in NTFS, but that would not let any non-Windows device write to it. The WL700gE formats it to ReiserFS, which it can read but neither Windows nor Mac OS supports natively.

I would of course love to be able to transfer files to and from the drive using firewire rather than over the network when I have large files I need transferred. Which is common.
Hence, it would seem reiserFS is the way to go... Unless you have any other suggestions. And I am open to other suggestions :p

I did find this page on Apple's website:
http://developer.apple.com/document...gramming/Filesystem/chapter_12_section_1.html

Specifically this part:
"By using the Mac OS X Virtual File System (VFS) capability and writing kernel extensions, you can add support for other file systems. Examples of file systems that are not currently supported in Mac OS X but that you may wish to add to the system include the Andrew file system (AFS) and the Reiser file system (ReiserFS). If you want to support a new volume format or networking protocol, you’ll need to write a file-system kernel extension."

I'm guessing that means that it's only a matter of time before someone actually does it, if there isn't already a move toward that already.

As for Windows, it seems that there is a ReiserFS filesystem driver being developed much like the ext2/3 one already available:
http://rfsd.sourceforge.net/about.html

It apparently already has a pre-release out on Sourceforge. I wouldn't know how well it works though because I don't have it installed, and more importantly, I don't have any ReiserFS volumes to use it with.

If you could manage to get it formatted as either ext2 or FAT, it might solve the problem. From personal experience with my USB flash drive, OS X doesn't have any problems reading from or writing to FAT, and I did see a kernel extension for ext2 floating around on Sourceforge. Don't know if it provides for write ability. The Windows driver for ext2 that I mentioned earlier provides both read and write access, though.
