• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I got invited to this girls house for a sleepover and I think she's gonna bring out the board. What do I do if that happens??

For Pete's sake.. DO IT BLINDFOLDED. Have someone who’s honest write down what the board says to you. It will show you that this silly piece of cardboard and plastic CANNOT summon spirits and nonsense.

How does the Ouija board work? New-Agey folks think you get messages from spirits or ghosts or Invisible Pink Unicorns or something. Yeah, sure. Here's the real explanation, from the Skeptic's Dictionary (http://skepdic.com/ouija.html): "those using the board either consciously or unconsciously select what is read." If you want to prove it to yourself, follow the advice of that same site: "simply try it blindfolded for some time, having an innocent bystander take notes on what letters are selected. Usually, the result will be unintelligible nonsense."

Uh-huh. What if no one is touching it and it is giving you answers. :|

I believe in God and His angels, and I believe in Satan and his angels. Both are real, both are active, and God isn't the one speaking through Quija boards.

Is it impossible that God is speaking through the Ouija Board rather than Satan? If so, why? It does say in the Bible that God forbids fortune-tellers, but why would God not use Ouija Boards to spread His word? A friend of mine once asked it if God was real and He was Jesus. It literally flew to "Yes" and now she is a Born-Again Christian (not nessessarily just for that reason, but I know it helped) . I don't see how that is Satanic or occultic.

It's not soo much that they are unable to do it, it's the simple fact that God specifically states in the Bible that we are not allowed to consult with the dead, or evil evil will be driven out before us!

Did you guys know that the Exorcist was a book written off a true story. And the story states that the little boy(boy instead of girl) became possessed after his aunt died, whom the aunt and little boy would summon the dead, to talk to spirits. I see that as God punishing the boy for his sin.

Duet 18:10...[BIBLE]No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augor, or a sorcerer, or one who cast spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits, or who seeks oracles from the dead. For whomever does these things is abhorrent to the lord:it is because of such practices that the Lord your God is driven them before you.[/BIBLE]

I just think some things in life aren't to be played around with, I don't want some evil spirits messintg around with me when I'm home alone at 11pm, so Ijust won't go there.

So could someone give me some info on why they are bad so I can show her? She says shes a Christian but she used tarot cards and junk like that.

I just want to back up people on it and show everyone who thinks its okay that its really...not...

Thank you.

anything where u take the power of God into ur own hands is bad... cus u never control the spirits they ALWAYS control u. no matter what u could never control them... by witchcraft u practically throw the door open for satan to come in... heck ur practically serving him tea....

anyway it is wrong because God said witchcraft is wrong... plain and simple.

I have read this thread and I realize that christians only should answer. I am new here, so forgive me for overstepping. I think that the pagan view might be of some actual help.

I have been warned against useing the board by both christians and witches. DOes that tell you something? When even the pagans won't touch it? For the exact same reasons that have been pointed out by the christians on this board. You are playing with fire. It is NOT a game. It truely draws up spirits that are not too nice and once you have let them in, it is almost impossible to get rid of them.

Mods- I am adding insightful information to this question. I am not belittling anyone or trolling. It would be a SHAME if this were deleted.

The following was written by Larry Barrieau

Ouija in the Classroom

"I teach seventh grade earth science in a rural school in northern Massachusetts. An important part of understanding science as a process, and not just a body of knowledge, is understanding the scientific method. So, for the past decade I have been introducing the scientific method in a rather unique way: I use the paranormal.

For the first few weeks of every school year, my class uses subjects of the paranormal to investigate the scientific method. We discuss UFOs, ghosts, Big Foot, the Loch Ness monster, Ouija, psychics, dowsing, the Bermuda Triangle, crop circles, and many other old favorites.

I begin the discussion of each topic by having the students tell what they know, or think they know, about the phenomenon. They usually relate anecdotes about UFOs or ghosts or what they have learned on television ("Alien Autopsy," Nostradamus, "Unsolved Mysteries," etc.).

After looking at the quality of evidence for belief in the phenomenon, we shift to the skeptical viewpoint. For this, I use my complete set of back issues of Skeptical Inquirer and several titles published by Prometheus Books. The students can see that the evidence for the phenomenon dissipates rapidly when held up to a skeptical investigation. They also come to understand some of the many reasons why people make such claims; from honest mistakes to outright fraud.

Finally, we do a little experiment of our own with a Ouija board.

The Ouija Experiment

Many kids have played with Ouija boards, especially at sleepovers. In class, my students tell of their experiences, and many of them believe that something paranormal did happen.

To begin the experiment, I ask what the students believe was "paranormal" about their experiences. They say such things as, "The indicator moved by itself; we didn't push it," or, "There are spirits who know the answers to all questions, and it is they who move the indicator through our fingers."

I then ask the two students who appear to be the most fervent believers to carry out the experiment. I explain that the question asked to the Ouija board will be one to which only I know the answer. (It's usually something like, "Where was Mr. Barrieau's maternal grandmother born?") An envelope with the correct answer inside is then shown to the class and kept in my pocket.

To get the class to take this seriously, I announce that if the Ouija board answers the question precisely, I will give everyone in class an A for the year and they won't have to come to class again. This definitely gets their attention!

The two students selected to operate the Ouija board then sit opposite each other. Two other students hold a large piece of oak tag under the operators' chins so that the operators can't see their own laps. I then place the Ouija board (one that a student has brought in and "works") on their laps so that the orientation of the board is unknown to the operators. The indicator is put on the board and the students place their fingers on it. Another student is assigned to record where the indicator stops each time the operators say that it has. This recorder positions himself or herself to see the board while the operators cannot.

My question is given to one of the operators who asks it to the Ouija board. When the operators are satisfied that the answer has been given, the recorder writes the information on a piece of paper. Then I hand the envelope to the recorder, who opens it and writes my answer on the chalkboard. The recorder then writes the operators' answer next to mine. A groan goes up after the first couple of letters are written. (They really wanted that A.)

Of course the Ouija has never even produced a word, much less an accurate answer. Protests are immediate: "It wasn't dark!" "We didn't have a candle!" "We weren't in a circle!" This is when I introduce the idea of eliminating variables and invite them to set up their own experiments at home doing just that.

I realize that I am not a scientist and that this experiment has holes in it big enough for James Randi to levitate through. But with this age group, it seems to work very well.

As we discuss other paranormal subjects, I ask the students to think of ways they might test the claims. Many good answers surface, and discussion on how to eliminate variables gets lively. When we finish this section, I ask the students to make posters to illustrate the phrase Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. The poster voted the best is placed in a prominent spot on the wall for the rest of the year.

So, after this paranormal unit do all of my students become skeptics? Yeah, right. But some do become skeptical about some of the topics. And at least the seed has been planted in others, and we can only hope for future germination."

Not everything can be explained away by science. To the point where it is almost imppossible to state facts anymore. Science is always changing.

I know from personal experience that the spiritual world exists. I have been on both sides of the coin. From christian to pagan to confused.

Hello Goldfishgal,

The below quote is taken from a web site hosted by a former astrologer, ouija board user, tarot card user, etc. turned Christian. Her name is Marcia Montenegro, and I highly recommend that you contact her and ask her the question you posted in this thread. I guarantee that she will be able to give you excellent reasons why one should stay away from the ouija board.

THE OUIJA BOARD --- JUST A GAME???

Parker Brothers did not invent the Ouija Board. It had already been around for awhile when it was bought by Parker Brothers in 1966 and turned into a commercial success as a board game. Its beginnings lie in the distant past when an earlier version (a tripod device) was used in the ancient ws of Babylon and Greece to contact departed spirits. The tripod became the pointer now used with the Board, which is printed with the alphabet, the numbers 1-9, a 0 (zero), and the words 'Goodbye', 'Yes', and 'No'. There are other boards like this with different names, but with the same history and purpose. The modern version of this game was developed by a man named Planchette, a spiritualist (someone who contacts the dead as part of their religion). The Board was further transformed around the turn of the century under the direction and ownership of two men, Elijah J. Bond and William Fuld. Fuld’s name can be seen on the Ouija Board today. The name Ouija is a combination of the French and German words for 'yes': Oui and Ja. According to Bond and Fuld, the Board suggested its own name. The primary purpose of the board is and always has been to contact disembodied spirits. Contacting the dead is called necromancy, and contacting spirits is spiritism, both strongly condemned by God (Deut. 18:9-12; Lev. 19:31, 20:6; I Sam 28, II Kings 21:6; Is. 8:19, 19:3-4). The Board’s translated name, 'yes, yes', is an ingenious and subtle way to invite spirit contact. Dead people cannot hang around after death; you cannot communicate with a dead person. The practices and techniques of contacting the dead and contacting spirits are used widely in the occult. Although the pointer is often moved intentionally or subconsciously by the players, you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position when using the Board. By 'playing' this 'game', you are showing an interest in spirit contact. If contact is made, it is demons (evil spirits, fallen angels), not the dead, who are responding. If Satan can disguise himself as "an angel of light" (2 Cor. 11:14), then it is not improbable that fallen angels can disguise themselves as the dead. The Ouija Board is not harmless just because it is marketed as a game. Satan, the master of deception and seduction, is good at twisting the truth into lies (Gen. 3:1-6; Jn. 8:44). Satan likes disguises and his lies are often disguised as games. The next time you are tempted to play the Ouija Board as a game, look beyond its disguise and see it for what it really is. Think about this: Just what or who are you trying to contact? God tells us to seek Him instead of the dead (Is. 8:19), and Christ "lives forever to plead with God" on behalf of those who believe Him (Heb. 7:25b). Who wants the Ouija Board when you can know the One Who has "complete authority in heaven and on earth!" (Matt.28:18). If you are wondering about Christ, think on His words in John 5:23b-24, "He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father , who sent him. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."

Just remember when you speak with your friend, use Scripture ( Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.)

Here's some Scripture to reference in regards to your question:

Leviticus 19:26b " 'Do not practice divination or sorcery.
31 " 'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 20 6 " 'I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.
Deuteronomy 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

Ouija boards and tarot cards them selves anre not bad and not evil. but the faith we put in them is wrong. Our faith is strong and can be used as a catalyst to make them evil. people think they are door ways to the spirit releam they are not. but it is us who can communicate with demons and in almost the same way that we pray to God.
the bible states we should not contact the dead it does not state we can't.

My stance: I wouldn't recommend doing either, and as a matter of fact, burn them so no one else will be tempted to use those items.

Because it's our faith that makes these items work, it can be said that our faith in these things is the gateway to the spirit realm. Though this is the case, since faith is put in them, on the practical level, these objects are gateways because of what they represent.

Sadly, what people don't realize is that once you open the door to Satan, to demons, it's open. As a non believer messing in the occult you have no protection from God. You become the devil's plaything. Satan wants nothing more than to kill and destroy us - believer or not, we're just another notch on his belt. I myself have experienced spritual manifestations while using a ouija board that became physical and very violent. I see no humor in these things.

Those things are freaky. Go to www.unsolvedmysteries.com and go to "Ouija Mysteries" section. there are horrifying tales of demonic possesion, of satan attacking people, of evil spirits being released into houses. ouija isnt fun. it is a horrible evil device.

here are some freaky stories:

Yesterday, my brother and I decided to play with the ouija board. We haven't played with the board ever since my friend moved away which was several months ago. We did the board at my house for the first time. All the other times we've played the board, it was away from my house. Some reason, I wanted to do it at my place.

My brother was on the board at first and he started to get something so I decided to go on the board as well. At first, we got Max. Max was one of the spirits that we would always get on my friend's board. We also got Bill, another spirit that we always talk with.

After talking with those two, I asked if there was another spirit around. Then comes in a boy named Mike who is 8 years old. He tells us that he lives in the house with us and Brandon and his father are no longer around our homes. I've talked about Brandon and his father in my other posts a long time ago.

Mike said that he took Brandon's place and says that Brandon had gone home. I thought that was weird because why would Brandon all of a sudden just leave like that? I dunno.

We starting having a normal converstation with Mike. Then Mike started to tell us that he was drowned in Wallowa Lake, in a city that's about 5 or so hours away. He kept saying "Make a wall...Make a wall" over and over again. It didn't make any sense. He then left.

My bf comes home and we all started to talk on the board. Again, we got Mike and he kept telling us to make a wall. We asked more questions about the wall thing and stuff. Then he said that he wanted us to make a wall out of blood. Our blood. He didn't want us to kill ourself there, he just wanted us to get a boat, go into the middle of the lake and put a drop of our blood into the lake.

I think that's just fishy, don't u agree? I'm not going to drive down there just to prick my finger and put blood in the lake. There's gotta be something to it.

We talked to Mike a bit longer, asking other questions like any other person would like and we said good-bye to him. The Make a wall out of blood is just fishy and I don't get what he means by that. Maybe something bad would happen if we did go to the lake, but we're not going to. I feel that there is something else to that story.

here is one reply: that it is an ancient daemology ritual to summon up demons and allow them to posses your body. by droping blood into a lake, you give permission to a demon to take over your body. it was popular in the meidival times and used by sorccorers.

*************************************************************

I wasn't sure what to believe. I never really believed in the ouija board. One day I was at my grandma and grandpa's and found an ouija board in the closet. I asked my grandma if I could borrow it. She said it was fine since she never used it anymore. So my friend came over one night and we decided to play it. We darkened the room and lit it with candles, to make it more freaky. I asked it, "When will my grandfather die?" It answered, "Wednesday". Then, suddenly, all the candles went out and we were alone in the darkness. A stench of blood creeped into the house. It floated around until Wednesday. Then, Wednesday night, we got a call from my grandmother that my grandfather was dead. I gave the ouija board back to my grandma a.s.a.p.

****************************************************

name=withold othernames=correct location=My home DATE=1997 witnesses=Best friend, sister, mother, my best friends boy friend, and ex-boyfriend First of all, let me tell you about myself. I am a believer in the unexplained, but I ry to keep myself out of the "scene" so that I don't get involved in something i didn't want to.

My story starts when my best friend brought over some games and brought a ouji board with her. I didn't believe in it, I thought it was just a game. I did however believe in all of the other unexplainable happenings.

My boyfriend waned to play with the ouiji board and begged me to play as well. I opted out but would watch...I was curious. My sister, 12 at the time, and her friend played with him. I watched the board spell out a few things, I don't remember the questions that were asked ut I figured I would test the game. So I touched the "mover". I desided to figure out a question that no one else would be able to answer. I asked how my sisters uncle died (her and I have different fathers and this uncle was her fathers brother). The ouiji board answered "cancer". That was not totally correct so I asked where was the cancer. It then replied "AIDS". I was dumbfounded, because this is why her uncle had died, he had AIDS and acquired cancer because his immune system was failed. My sister was never told of this becasue she was too young to know and my boyfriend didn't know either, basically I was the only one in the house who knew.

This convinced me to give it a chance. We played a lot, my best friend played as well. Her and I played togeter alot. I was told of some odd things, I was born to help her. Her mother and twin brother died when she was very young. We then talked to a spirit who calle dherself "Y" She hated my best friend and would only talk to me, for some weird reason. We asked her to give us a sign that she ws there, one bad question to ask. She told us to go into the bathroom and there we find the words.."Hi I'm Y". This went on for the time that we played the ouiji board over the next couple of weeks. There were many "notes" left for us. Many of them were wishing death on my best friend. We also spoke with spirits that did not share hatred with us. Their visits were always verys brief. We asked for my best friends twin brother to talk to us. He died when he was 2 so what he was saying made no sense, but we knew he was with his mother becasue she spoke with us, as well. These spirits' visits were always very brief.

Y was the holder of the board, we had to ask her to speak with everyone. She was not very mean to all of us only my best friend. I would usually hae to ask her to let us talk to other spirits, she never talked to my best friend and very rarely spoke with others.

Then one night my boyfriend called "an evil spirit" This spirit was suposidely the evilest spirit in Chile. He called her by speaking in Spanish, she would replu in Spanish always, but sometimes he would tlak to her in English. The ight he called her my mother and sister freaked out. My mother dared this spirit, as if to call her bluff. This spirit threatened my mother with many things. Still my mother threatened her. Then my mother began walking around the house aimlessly. I followed her and asked her what she was doing, she looked at me blankly then replied "I do not know." She then sat down and fell asleep, sitting straight up. I know my mother and this is not like her, so I started hollaring at her and waking her up. This was the hardest thing I had ever done, she just wouldnt wake up. Then when she did my sister was weird, she became catatonic....my mother said "there's nothing wrong with her" I knew there was because I know my sister very well. She then took off and ran to my moms room, closed the door, left the light off and started screaming. I then started talking to the ouiji board telling it to stop, and it told me to tell my sister to go my room. Her uncle and grandfather wanted to help her and they couldn't come to us, there was too much evil. So I grabbed her and finally got her to come around and her and I went to my room. When she walked in, I was standing behind her, she started screaming. She scared me so bad that I just took a glimpse and ran.

There I saw was a white light. It was as though a person was standing in my room but instead of a body it was light. We then told the board good-bye, it was all we could stand and sore to eachother that we wouldn't let this happen again.

The next day my best friend and I gave it one last shot. Curiousity. The first thing that was said was "Daphny" We didnt know what was going on because we had asked no questions. It turned out that "Y" was tlaking to me and told me who I was in my past life, where I lived and what year I died. In my "past life" I died in 1978, in this life I was born in November 78. SHe also said that I was born for my bestfreind, to help her though her life. I was told that 2 times on this game, it was very weird.

There were many occurances of strange happenings during the time that we played this game. There were so many that I could write a book. I do not plan to ever put myself through that again....it was both interesting and scary.

There was never a conclusion, we simply stopped and went on with our lives. After all fo it took place I tried to figure out if this was someones doing because there were about 6 of us participating, but then I realized how much I trusted all of them. They were only my closest friends and family.

See how scary they can be???? please do not use them they are an abomination to God and can kill you!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone I know made a thread on another forum and said she'd do ouijas for people and someone said to never touch them and she doesn't think they are bad.

So could someone give me some info on why they are bad so I can show her? She says shes a Christian but she used tarot cards and junk like that.

I just want to back up people on it and show everyone who thinks its okay that its really...not...

Thank you.

Hi Goldie -

Thanks for being such a good friend. I wish I'd hard someone to warn me back in the '70s.
First, a couple of websites: www.probe.org/content/view/854/65 (In the paragraphs headed "Games of Destruction", it mentions that Satanists use Ouija Boards). And on my website (listed on profile page) under "Personal Testimony", see pertinent paragraph headings that tell my experience with the Board. Here's a summary:

I had been an atheist for many years, then I played the Ouija Board (thinking it was just another game), and became demon oppressed because of it. The next couple of years were very frightening for me. Among other things, I could read people's minds. There was a pull there, like I could have more power if I asked Satan for it, but I was never tempted, I could tell the demons had nothing in store for me but evil and destruction. Because of those problems, and the fact that they would temporarily stop when I asked God to stop them (even tho I had been an atheist), I started searching for the one true God who could protect me.

That eventually led me to the Scriptures, and I trusted in Christ as my sinbearer. Soon after that, I asked God to forgive my sin of playing the Ouija Board (we can sometimes break a law that we are not aware of). I had already thrown the Board away. Immediately things were much better. Every time there would be an incident, I would simply command Satan to take his demons and leave, based on the power of Jesus Christ and His shed blood for me. It has been some time since I have had any demonic oppression, though I know Satan would still like to break me, since I am a Christian. But I'm on the winning team.

I'll pray for your friend. God bless you. Aloha in Jesus.
