Sabbath Rest Made for Me

There's a great story I would like to share with you from Mrs. Lettie Cowman's wonderful book, Springs in the Valley. In the deep jungles of Africa, a traveler was making a long trek. Coolies had been engaged from a tribe to carry the loads. The first day they marched rapidly and went far. The traveler had high hopes of a speedy journey. But the second morning these jungle tribesmen refused to move. For some strange reason they just sat and rested. On inquiry as to the reason for this strange behavior, the traveler was informed that they had gone too fast the first day, and that they were now waiting for their souls to catch up with their bodies.

My work schedule is generally Sunday through Thursday and I have Fridays and Saturdays off which work out wonderfully for Shabbat (Sabbath). The Saturdays of May 23rd and 30th I filled in for a lady who due to her disability income is allowed only a certain amount above that disability income. Because the boss is frequently adding extra time because he needs her at the end of each month she is frantically trying to find someone to cover the extra hours or else she loses her disability. So anyway, on those days I was not able to rest to the full extent that I believe God calls us to. I was irritable and cranky and it was starting to show up in my posts here.

I found that during those two weeks the days just wore on and on and on. Sunday seemed like Monday, then Monday seemed like Sunday, etc.. Plus I was just exhausted. I had had Friday off and some might think that is enough, but apparently, it wasn't. Well, this last Sat I was called for help again but this time I turned it down. I needed rest. I got to church and I must say that my body perked up with the fellowship of other believers and study of the Word....good food (every week we have an Oneg) and Fellowship. I still feel a bit of tiredness, but my soul feels much more rested. :p
