Righteous Acts

Deut 24:5-13

Remember living in a country that does not on a whole observe God's instructions can be difficult. In the event that we ARE able to do as God instructed then we should do what we can.

The government in the USA (where I'm at) currently have a "draft". Our soldiers enlist on their own. For a newly married couple, both should be together at least a year (according to this scripture). If a couple is planning to get married and one or both is also planning to enlist the time period between enlistment and reporting for duty should be considered. Any marriage is challenged with such circumstances, much more a new one. If the soldier gets married while enlisted they pretty much have no choice in when they are activated. We can do only what we can do. God does not hold us accountable for things we have no control of.

No one should take a "millstone" as collateral. A millstone ground the grain with which the person supported themselves and their family. Today, to take someones "Millstone" translates as anything that the person uses to support themselves. A debtor should not take that as collateral because in the event that the person is not able to pay their debt and lose their means of supporting themselves and their family it would be devestating to them.

No one was to kidnap another member of the community of Israel and make them a slave, God called that wickedness and the kidnapper was to be killed. We may not be of the Israli community, but it is not OK to kidnap others and force them into slavery of any kind. To God it is despicable. Unfortunately, kidnapping and making slaves of all sorts has happened througout history and some is still happening today.

Those with leprosy: Do as the priests instruct for God has given them the instructions (Lev 14:1-32). The verse then adds on a statement regarding what happened to Miriam as they were leaving Egypt (Num 12). Miriam was struck with leprosy due to her criticizing of Moses. Aaron was involved too but Miriam was the ring-leader. The clue to that is that her name is mentioned first in the verse. If Aaron had been the leader of the criticalness it would say Aaron and Miriam.

If you lend anything to someone do not go into their home and take his collateral. You must stand outside and wait for him to bring it to you. If he is poor you are not to go to bed with his collateral in your possession. His collateral was likely something needed by him...for instance his cloak or his bed. You must not allow him to sleep without covering or a bed. God considers this a righteous act on your part.

All these exact situations are not necessarily likely to take place in todays society, however, the situations have similarities to things that do happen in todays world and are a guide to how we should handle them with righteousness.
