We continue this entry with its namesake verse.
Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds!
For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
(Psalm 9:11-12 ESV)
Here we see verse two (Psalms 9:2 ESV) echoed by verse 11 and verse 5 (Psalms 9:5 ESV) echoed by verse 12. In verse two David commits to singing praises but this transforms into a corporate command to all who are listening to join in with him and sing praises to our Lord and "tell among the peoples his deeds." The people of Israel were intended to set an example to all of the nations of the world and to make them jealous of their holiness so that the other nations would seek after the God of Israel but the people of Israel fell away. So too we as the Church must succeed where Israel failed and tell all the nonbelievers of our God's goodness that they may be saved (and serve as holy examples). We should tell them of all of the times that he has blessed us. I believe if we tell others of our past blessings this will unlock future blessings.
The Lord has done me many kindnesses, providing me with wise counsel in the Word and through a variety of ministers that have helped guide my walk with him. After a fast he permanently healed a pain in my knee that I had after a sports injury. He has also healed me of a variety of allergies and has provided me this blog to help develop my relationship with him and hopefully help others in their walks. For this I give him praise and thanks!
Be gracious to me, O Lord!
See my affliction from those who hate me,
O you who lift me up from the gates of death,
that I may recount all your praises,
that in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may rejoice in your salvation.
(Psalm 9:13-14 ESV)
This is our cry when we are in the depths. We plead God's mercy so that we can later praise him and glorify him. This is right and meet to do.
The nations have sunk in the pit that they made;
in the net that they hid, their own foot
has been caught.
The Lord made himself known;
he has executed judgment;
the wicked are snared in the work of
their own hands.
Higgaion. Selah
(Psalm 9:15-16 ESV)
So as they have done it has been done to them. The Lord makes his presence and existence known in his judgment. When the wicked are punished and misdeeds found out this is the work of the Lord and his word being performed on the earth. The "Selah" means we should pause and contemplate this. We need only look through history to see what has happened to so many of the wicked. Rest assured even those who escape punishment in this life do not escape the second death and the lake of fire.
The wicked shall return to Sheol,
all the nations that forget God.
For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.
(Psalm 9:17-18 ESV)
If you forget God then you will be forgotten and brought to the pit. Those who are poor in spirit, those who recognize that they are needy, will be remembered by God and their hope will not perish forever, unlike the wicked.
Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail;
let the nations be judged before you!
Put them in fear, O Lord!
Let the nations know that they are but men! Selah.
(Psalm 9:19-20 ESV)
Let God be true and every man a liar (Romans 3:4). The nations continue to rage against God (Psalm 2) and so the Lord must put them in fear so they realize they are not God but merely men, made in jars of clay and whose very breath is vanity. The Lord endures.
Lord, I pray that we abound in praise of you, more and more. Please open our eyes to all of the things we should be thankful for that we may tell of all your wonderful deeds toward us. Hallelujah!
