Just like people, having seemingly two opposing ways with politics, we can as humans transcend from a selfish character running primarily on animal instinct, to an alternate, one of love and servitude to God and each other. You do realize we are the only species that knows we will eventually die. We once chose to understand, by way of the fruit of knowledge, that there were two opposing ways of the same thing (producing works/choice). We weren't so good, however, at knowing which side to follow. Most take the easiest and most self-serving way based on self-interest which leads to an eventual dead-end literally, while life itself is a continuous flow of that love and servitude previously mentioned. It helps, not hinders. It by itself cannot lead to eternal life, but it is doing the Will of God and not our own will, that leads to that eternal life. Servitude to all is His will.
